I'm with ya LB... I think we HHS have a total of 12 stolen bases on the year. I'm about as fair as I can be. The coaches use the info to prepare. Same with errors... We expect our girls to make plays and when they boot a ball or over throw, it's an error. I know you do the same although I recorded 2 more Bird errors than you had. We don't give out stats to the girls... Just the W and Ls, which are what matters anyway. Padding stats don't win ball games.

Are the Birds a lock? Of course not. But I will say having Coffey back does more than just having a great defensive player back on the field but also gives the team a lot more flexibility and takes some of the pressure off the younger ones who had zero varsity experience prior to the season. I'll look tonight, but as solid as this team was defensively last year, this team probably has less errors. With Coffey back that number will hopefully continue to improve. Not that the players in that position committed a ton just they were either out of position or inexperienced. She also adds her bat and speed to help offensively to allow the big boppers, Graybill and Dutcher, to do their thing and drive in runs. With Spencer turning up the heat recently and Quillen doing what she always does and come on strong when it counts... I like their chances right there with St Henry Conner NCc and Boone... But something tells me a certain team from Park Hills has been laying low and Coach Joe may be licking his chops come district and region time...

Congrats to the Lady Breds on the victory. They took advantage, like you are supposed to do, of some Bird errors and poor officiating. Typical HHS/NCC one run Battle. Too bad the plate Ump missed this one... Typically I don't complain much about umps because usually when they're bad they are at least consistent with both teams. The last time I said anything about umps being poor was the State Tournament. And this guy was at least that bad. Strike zone was whatever he felt like on that pitch. First two innings shoulders was the top of the zone then later belt high was a ball. Im a homer, but even BGH was laughing at the calls against the Birds. Key point in the game, count is one and one runner on first steals second, batter swings through... Strike not recorded. Next pitch is a ball and ump calls the count at 2-1... Batter ends up getting a hit... Does it really matter then? Of course it does... You call a totally different pitch with the correct count. NCC scores 3 in the inning with two outs and some un-timely errors. Box score NCC 3. 4. 1 HHS 2 6. 4 Schreiber. 2-3 with a SB for NCC Meyers 6ks 2bb 6 hits. 1 earned run Dutcher 3-3 2b Graybill 1-3 2b Spencer 6ks 1 bb 4 hits no earned runs

The Birds get the best of a tight one today. Spencer gets the win with 5 Ks against 2 BBs while limiting the Cardinals to 4 hits. Graybill, Quillen and Fornash gather two hits a piece. Pretty good game by both squads with few errors Colerain 2 and HHS just one. Stolen Bases by Fornash and Jansen. I will say the SS for Colerain can pick it... Nice player... The schedule doesn't get any easier as the Birds host Indiana power East Central tomorrow at the Bird Cage...

Not to jack your thread but I heard Malea Abner for HHS had a couple doubles last night. Just wanted to give her a shout out as all the hard work is paying off...

Congrats to Todd aka Sugar. In coaching 25 years plus, I can honestly say he was always the hardest worker and gamer I had the pleasure to have as a player. Not to mention one of the more polite and respectful kids as well. I'm so happy for him and am looking forward to seeing what this young man becomes.

I probably heard the same story. Have no idea who was involved but if the story of what happened was true, dismissals should be the minimum penalty.

The Birds continued their Tour of Kentucky last night and came out on the short end last night. Sorry don't have many details (could be the 3 am arrival back home) but the first game was close and the second not so much. Although there was a lot of position changes and they made sure all the kids got to play some in the second. Shelby Graybill had another Bomb to right on a 3-0 count in the first and Brennah Dutcher added a couple more 2b to her total. The wind stole a homer from her in the second one off the top of the fence. The main point of this tour is to play some top notch programs and give the girls a little fun during the break and this was one of those. I have to give major props to the Warren South program. Their venue is probably on par with most college programs. While the field was grass, from afar you would think it was turf. Beautifully manicured and pristine. The press box complex was amazing and had a players lounge that you would see in some D1 schools. Huge sectional and big screen with custom wood lockers for the players. They video and broadcast each game and it plays on some various monitors throughout the complex. Even while waiting in line at the concession stand you can still see all the action. BUT most of all was the awesome hospitality they showed. There was never anything we needed that they were not on it. We had three girls hit by pitch last night and by the time they got in the dugout there was a WS player there with a bag of ice and seeing if there was anything the player or coaches needed. I'm just a scorekeeper and they tried their best to not let me pay for anything at the concession stand. With they way they treat their opponents they deserved the little cash my tab was. They also offered to send us a DVD of the games if we wanted to use it for any reason. Wonderful facility and even more awesome people. Well worth the trip!!! Best of luck to that organization going forward. The girls have the day off today heading to Manmouth Cave and then to the 'ville to catch the UK/UofL game tonight...

Yep frozen it was and when it did start to thaw a bit it became mud. Hate it for the teams that travelled in but again, this is the Pete Noll. Good weather and dry fields and the name would have to change.

The Birds get back on track with a win on, should we say, chilly evening. Pounding out 9 hits, Graybill 2-3 2b, 3b and Dutcher 3-3, 2-2b 4 rbi leading the charge. Spencer had a nice game in the circle with 4Ks against 2 BBs and only one earned run. I could not make this event but I understand the "extra deep" fences kept Graybill from adding to her HR total with 3 bombs just short of the fence. I guess early doom and gloom for this team might have been a little premature. Or maybe they are just a crappy weather team. Good luck to the Birds on another chilly morning today..

The score indicates there is some work to do... Nothing to do with not playing what is felt to be the best line up. I have yet to see a decision at the varsity level where someone is sitting or not playing if they are the best option at the time. I think I have missed about 3 games in the past three years. With the exception for reasons beyond playing ability. I.e. " zero tolerance" or missing games or practice. When filling four spots in this case, you really do not know how some players will react until they get into game situations. The holes are being filled with players that have very limited, if any, varsity time and it might take a bit for them to figure it out. They will get it soon enough and if not, next lady up.... JV looked good for the little they played last night and the gap between Varsity and JV is closing which is a good thing for the program. Patience for the next week or two will be key.

The Birds have to replace grads Kendall Turner LF (truly the inspirational leader from last year and Ashley Grosser CFand also now senior Peyton RF who decided not to return. All outfield starters. They also are without Haley Coffey SS ( great leader by example and picks it as well as any SS in the region, who will be out for an extended period of time early in the season with an injury. Returning starters are: Shelby Graybill C, 3rd Whitney Quiilen 3rd, C, SS Rachell Gabbard 2nd Bailey Spencer P Brennah Dutcher 1st As of now players filling the other positions: Morgan Coffey OF Josie Daley OF Taylor Baioni OF Brooke Dill SS Kara Fornash OF Cloe Jansen OF Miranda Mason P

I've got the Birds stats and they are not so great to say the least. The Lady Crusaders came ready to play and the Birds seemed to go throu the motions. One of those games when you can tell just by watching infield who came to play and who didn't. You would think by the score that there were a lot of physical errors but just not the case. Mainly mental ones for the Birds. Missing cuts, lack of extra effort in the field and some poor choices with the ball gave the Cru a few extra outs in this one. Not to mention the hitting was pretty much non existent with the exception of Shelby. her laser to left was amazing. The only question was would it be high enough!!! The Birds are having to fill four starting spots and I'm sure Rob and the staff will find out soon enough who wants those positions the most and get them on track. The offense needs to pick it up and understand that 4 hits are not going to win many ball games. Obviously not the outcome they expected but good to see some areas that need the work now than later in the season. Congrats to the Cru on a solid game and clearly the better team last night as the players played with a mission and it showed. Outside of the inconsistent strike zone ( equally for both sides I might add) there was only one other issue I noticed last night. Whoever the Cru's first base coach is may need to understand this is High School Softball and not "Bush League". Yelling "Down" loudly to clearly deceive the defense when there is no play requiring it, is a little out of line. especially from a base coach.

Speaking of the Pete Noll. Is there a bracket out yet? Was there a draw or just filled in?

Birds open their season with the Lady Tigers at the Vets. My guess would be the snorkels and fins are on order as I'm sure the vets is under water now. You are right as always UK... I think she had 3 or 4 strike outs for the season... That was WAY too many? Just a little sarcasism with that.... She had at least 3 times as many home runs as Ks... My opinion, which means nothing btw, is that there are two players at the top of the heap and then all the rest.... Graybill and Haley (sp) Smith... Either could be number 1. Both play for programs that have extremely tough schedules and still post awesome numbers... Best wishes to all the ladies this season.... If the snow ever leaves that is...

Yep LB13.... Thanks for the dugout material. Snubbed Whit and ninth Region tourney MVP. But hey I'm all for it. Last time she was snubbed she took her BA from 258 first half to 550+. Mitchell played for Campbell County Youth Football League before he moved to the Fort. His first year in football. Started as a RB then switched to QB after an injury. Played in six games and threw quite a few TDs, don't remember how many but it was again sixth grade football. The kid is an all around athlete and whether he makes a run at QB or plays WR, he will excel at either. If he does throw his name in the hat, it will make the Birds better. Not because he may win the job, but competition is a good thing and it could make AH better knowing he may have some pressure. As with any QB, there are always things that need improved on and it would benefit both athletes. The question is... Could Cain play the position? I for one have no doubts... He is a gamer, football smart and brings a toughness to anything he plays. I remember in his last Red Team game he broke a finger on his throwing hand on one of the first few plays of the game and remained in the game to lead to a win. The injury led to surgery to puting pins in to repair the break. All this being said, I am severely biased and I want whatever is best for Mitchell and the Birds. Whether he throws a TD or catches another one in the next State Championship game makes no difference to me. We just need to get there....
