Softballsarehard posted the "Stats" thread http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-softball-high/stats-304125.html, and it got me thinking, and for the record webster, I am NOT taking a shot at your post in that thread.

 

I have kept the stats for the NewCath varsity team for the past 5 years and on numerous occasions been involved in games where the next day in the paper the stats don't come close to what I recorded for the opposing team and/or my team......or been at games and the next day the numbers just don't jive with what I witnessed the night before. I am NOT claiming to be an expert by no means, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. :lol2: I understand some teams only have a mom or dad keep the book, or even a girl on the team. However, how many statisticians give a batter credit for a hit just because the ball is hit hard, but right at a fielder, but it's booted? Or how many statisticians credit a batter with an RBI on an error or runner stops at third and scores on a throw getting past the cut-off? Or how about a runner being credited with a stolen base on a passed ball, wild pitch, or when it is clearly defensive indifference?

 

BTW, I'm not saying anyone is doing this intentionally and this is not a knock against anyone that keeps the book for teams.

I'm with ya LB... I think we HHS have a total of 12 stolen bases on the year. I'm about as fair as I can be. The coaches use the info to prepare. Same with errors... We expect our girls to make plays and when they boot a ball or over throw, it's an error. I know you do the same although I recorded 2 more Bird errors than you had. We don't give out stats to the girls... Just the W and Ls, which are what matters anyway. Padding stats don't win ball games.

Parent "Reports" to the local newspaper aren't accurate? Your kidding?

 

You should check out Middle School and little league football stats that get reported to the paper if you really want to read some fiction. I know a guy that did this and would give his kid credit for a dozen tackles a game while he only played maybe 4 or 5 plays on defense. Read one report of a middle school game one day where there were like 6 rushing TD's and 500 yards rushing for one team in a 21-14 loss :lol2: Gotta love mom and dad reporters!

We all have opinions on whats an error,hit,pass ball or wild pitch but i honestly believe that its the coachs responsibility to put the book in the hands of a person that is knowledgeable of the game and can determine the difference.Stats are not just a way to get in the newspaper it is more importantly a tool for the coaches to determine how girls hit,field,etc..It's also a simple way to give college coaches an idea of a girls skills,although just a heads up,Creating bogus stats is not cool.

College coaches care very little for stats for the reason that they can be pencil whipped. If a coach is interested in you it's because you have been to their camps or they saw you play somewhere.

Meatpuppy for the most part you are right but mark my word,college coaches read the newspapers,check websites and pay attention to stats of players they may have seen at the camps and exposures.Some even go as far as getting subscriptions to some of the best newspapers in the state just for that reason.

Meat puppy is correct college coaches do not use stats from high school, they may follow kids they are recruiting but IMO not for locating talent. When we were going through the process for my DD they flat out tell you High School are to inconsistent and not worth using as a evaluation. It's not just the pencil whipping its more the competition teams play!

Way to many high school teams are more interested in having great end of year banquets than winning championships! You can play a weak schedule and beat the heck out of teams which pads the stats (even if consistent) for hitters and pitchers (which make for a great banquet) but if they were playing better teams (getting better to win championships) would not be doing near as well.

If you are wanting to get the attention of a college coach make a skills video put it on YouTube and email the link to the coach. If your a hitter they want to see 10-15 continuos swings not an edited best of the best. It can be the best 10-15 out of 100 swings but they only want to see a couple minutes of your video highlighting your skills if they want to see more they will ask you to come to there camp which if you like a coach or school you should go to there camp to show them your skills in person. Obviously pitchers have there own set of skills the coaches want to see on the skills video.

Don't get me wrong if you threw a no hitter against the Louisville sluggers in Colorado put it on the video, but throwing one vs a bad team has no value. Don't believe me go to some of the off season recruiting camps like the one at Kent State usually in early January which is a good one and ask the coaches what they want to see.

Clarification

We've been told by multiple coaches to not bother putting stats on recruiting sheets. Coaches don't care because they don't know what kind of competition the numbers come against. Maybe if a player has put up certain numbers in a big national tournament you can put them in an email, but they will take any numbers with a grain of salt.

Okay,Okay i get what everyone is saying,but!!!College coaches are just like me and you.They read newspapers,surf the web.They read in the Courier Journal that freshman Betty Boop no hits McCracken Co. they will take notice.They will ask mister Google who she is and find out she led her unranked team in wins,k's and era the year before.That grain of salt suddenly turns into a grain of sand and you know what that well placed grain of sand turns into.Maybe the Alabama's,Tennessee's and UK's wont take notice but many colleges will.

If it's smaller schools looking for kids within a certain radius of their school, yeah I can see that. From my experience, the only time they really want to know stats is once they are on a kid, either recruiting them or the kids who have committed.
