Walton built as much as a 12 point lead in the second qtr, but only to watch Dunbar get back within 7 by the half. With 3 Walton starters (Simpson, Anderson, Rodgers) limited with foul trouble, Dunbar continued to chisel away in the second half behind stellar play by Herriford (16) and Cecil (25) and the Bulldogs finally took the lead late in the fourth. Off of a missed Dunbar free throw, at around 8 sec left, Hailey Ison goes all the way to the rack for a finish at the buzzer to force the OT. Walton would get an early OT lead off of an Ison 3 pointer and make free throws from there to win the game. Walton's JV won also, but I do not remember the score. Congrats Bearcats on the win! I wish the Bulldogs a great season! Cecil is a very nice and smooth ball player. Not only can she score, but makes all those around her score! And she is lights out from the foul line.

This is awesome news! Could not be more happy for her. Highlands will be a much better team when Coffee gets back in the mix. A team without the point guard is like cutting the head off a snake. The rest of the body can lose it's function and direction. With Coffee back, I think it is more than whatever numbers she might add scoring wise...although that helps. Suddenly now, the machine starts working more efficiently, and individual parts become more productive. You see higher percentage shots, less turnovers, more assist, and individuals ppg going up. Not to mention what it helps the team defensively.

Just that schedule alone gets my attention. Brutal. And I predict they win at least 3 of them.

Perhaps its because some parents "red shirt" their kids a year or so. :lol2: Perhaps more in the boys side of things, but you get the gist.

Tonight, the Ryle Raiders travel to Taylor Mill to take on the Scott Eagles for another interesting season opening matchup. Ryle, while coming in with a new coach and a new look, is ranked 3rd in the preseason NKY coaches poll. Although Scott is not ranked, there is no doubt the Eagles will be anxious to prove themselves, especially on their home court. Any thoughts or predictions on this one? Who are some of the players that could have big nights? Will Ryle's size keep the Eagles from soaring or will the Eagles "raid" the pirates? :lol2:

Agreed, Campbell has great shooters. But Franklin can defend them very easily if key ones are on the bench in foul trouble. I am not trying to say CC are "hackers" at all. On the contrary, Campbell is skilled. But here is why Campbell will have to be extra discipline on defense and not give too many cheap ones. 1. They are on the road out of their region (Something strange about that sometimes...lol) 2. Franklin has a couple of players in Kilbourne and Frank that are very good making you foul and getting to the line. 3. Campbell plays an aggressive defense full or half, that has a tendency to yield more foul calls. 4. They just came off of a scrimmage where you could not foul out and players did not have to sit even after the 11th personal foul. This may not be too big, but I think there is something to said about habit. You can't get away with something for a while, then in a snap, turn it off, without a game or two learning curve. Admittedly, I may be making this last point to much of a factor, however, the first three are legit.

This is a great season opener between two very good teams. No way I could make a solid call on it, or even try. I will not be surprised with a win by either team. I think on paper, the advantage might go to Franklin, but that's just paper. For various reasons, my prediction will be that Campbell struggles with foul trouble, and Franklin squeaks out the win. If Campbell can stay out of foul trouble, they can bring home the win.

Yes they did, although Highlands is not who they will be just yet. Missing your Senior point guard is huge, especially against the defense that Mason brings at you. I agree on the underdog thing.. I like it better also. And I don't mean any disrespect to Mason at all. They are a good looking ball club and they play crazy hard! As far as potential, I could not pick one over the other. It just seemed to me that the execution just wasn't as good as it could be yet, and things were a little sloppy. I don't know, perhaps that is how they normally play. I wouldn't think so though. I just figured it was normal early season stuff that they will continue to get better at. Like I said, my opinion was just based on where the teams were at today. Of course with girls basketball, all of that could be different tomorrow.

Let me add some details.... FIRST HALF: CC jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead before Walton hit its first bucket. Walton, not exactly in what will probably be their normal starting five, struggled with Campbell's pressure in the opening minutes and dug themselves in a hole. Once Walton settled down, some subs were made, and players were more in their roles, Walton played EVEN with Campbell the rest of the half. And RCC9 is correct, Ison was on the bench when Campbell jumped out to its early lead. At around the 3 minute mark, Campbell with the same 13 point lead, picked up their pressure full court. THIS is where Campbell is really good and they extended the lead by 10 to end the first half. SECOND HALF: Most of this half was probably much more like what we would have seen from Walton offensively and defensively if it was a regular game. Walton took an early lead, Campbell came back and would lead by smaller margins until late in the half. With Campbell leading by THREE, with around three to four minutes remaining, a timeout was called. At that point, Walton's coach sat ALL of the starters and out of the time out, Walton's JV, who mostly had not seen the floor yet, finished the game. Campbell's varsity pressure OVERWHELMED them and Campbell rattled off 20 plus points in a hurry. It did look a little funny watching Campbell press the dog doo out of that group, however, I DO NOT fault Coach Menefee. You are there to play your game and run your stuff, regardless of who is on the floor. In the end, Campbell is a very good ball club. They have some nice players and are very well coached. I love Taylor Clos (sp?) Her short range jumper is smooth. I hope the Camels have a great season and win the 10th as I root for the NKY teams.

Campbell is my clear cut preseason number one in the 10th region. I know Mason County is very good, however having the opportunity to see both scrimmage back to back this morning, I have to give the edge to CC. Again, this is now. There is a lot of practice, coaching, games to play and getting better to be done before the end of the season.

I'm not sure what your trying to say and why you would mention me in this post. Honestly, it makes no sense. Your thread introduction clearly stated that at a certain point, the SK coaches thought the physicality was too much (beyond legal) and pulled the players of the court. Now you say most people don't complain? I guess I'd pick one. I'm going to try to go high road here and really hope you are not making light of teams, coaches or parents when kids get injured. That would be on the edge of despicable. I have been around more than enough families that have had to deal with injuries that have resulted from the physicality of basketball, as many folks have, and NONE of them are something to make jabs at. Finally, if you have a question for me, you could just ask me yourself.

Your good. No apologies needed. I have absolutely no reason to be disappointed...at all. Number one. I just thought it was ironically funny. And it still is. Number two. It's thanksgiving. I am off work, with family, and getting ready to strap a feed bag on. It is hard to be disappointed in that situation. Number three. If SK got frustrated when physical play was matched or dished back, that is not disappointing, that is enlightening. It would certainly not be the typical Stowers teams of the last few years. So am I reading correctly? Coach Stowers got upset about over physical play? He cried about elbows and players trying to be over physical with his star player? Even to the point where he took his players off of the court? Really? If so, that's comical.The cheap shots, throw downs, elbows, rides, trash talks, etc that SK has built a reputation with the last few years (and have routinely gotten away with in their own 8th region) never seemed to bother him any at all. I guess it's different when the shoe is on the other foot.

Obvious. It certainly depends on how good. We were talking starting 5 so the assumption was "your best 5". I am with you on the point your making. If my post players are not skilled enough to force double teams, or weak side help, or if they are not able to force mismatches, then I'll take 5 quality guards any day of the week. In my post, I made specific reference to SKILLED post player.

Campbell County will be very good and extremely well coached. They will not, however, have the best starting 5 in NKY at any point in this season. At this point, I would go with Ryle, Holmes and Highlands for that honor, simply because they have a more balance line up with some version of skilled post players. I think you can do more with inside and outside balance than you can with 5 perimeter type players.

Mason plays Highlands on the 28th at 11:30AM. Game is in Highlands' Middle School gym.

As far as your observations, I am a little surprised with the bolded. It seems to me, and lining up with what you said above, that Coach Stowers usually plays pretty deep on his bench. Perhaps he wanted to see extended time with the core in order to still make some decisions. I have no idea...I am only guessing.
