Sorry, I don't have a score to report. Brossart was the aggressor in this scrimmage and SK just kept taking the punches. My favorite officials from the 10th region allowed a lot of contact and SK finally started throwing some elbows. Finally, Brossart rode Niece along the sideline without a call one time too many and Coach Stowers pulled his team from the court.

 

After a lengthy discussion with the officials, play continued. SK was the aggressor and was dominant from that point.

 

SK does not appear to have someone in the "enforcer" role that Bosse held last year. It will be interesting to see how they respond to physical play next time.

Silly me, I should have known a girls bb game officiated by 10th region officials game should be reported in the MMA forum!

So am I reading correctly? Coach Stowers got upset about over physical play? He cried about elbows and players trying to be over physical with his star player? Even to the point where he took his players off of the court?

 

Really? If so, that's comical.The cheap shots, throw downs, elbows, rides, trash talks, etc that SK has built a reputation with the last few years (and have routinely gotten away with in their own 8th region) never seemed to bother him any at all.

 

I guess it's different when the shoe is on the other foot.

I must have been at an entirely different scrimmage. Sorry this may disappoint you triple 7's but SK was actually the aggressor except for a short stint of time. No disrespect to either team as I thought both teams played physical, actually to physical, and it got to the point of no longer having a scrimmage because nothing was being accomplished other than risking injury. Stowers did pull his team after the PG came off a high screen and the Brossart player (which must of had 20 fouls no exaggeration) shoved the PG and starting bumping her to nearly half court. The refs did call a foul but on SK's PG. This after tempers were already high on both teams and an SK player thru an elbow after getting hit twice in the post with no whistle.

So the point being, great call by the coach as neither team was accomplishing much due to the physicality and kids were just getting angry and starting to take things in their own hands. That's on the officials as both coaches repeatedly requested for them to tighten things up.

As for the 'enforer' role. Their is no bigger physical presence than Meir. I've also heard that Buckner played extremely tough this summer having to go against some of the top Centers in the nation in Meir's absence so it sounds like SK is in good hands.

Where they will miss Bosse the most is the leadership role that she played but I expect that someone will evolve into that as time goes by. Keep in mind, they start 3 Soph, 2 Jr's and have a soph and two 8th graders as their top subs right now. That's a young team but highly competitive as evidence by these girls skill levels. They clearly work at their game.

 

I really have a hard time seeing anyone in the 8th beating them and fill its theirs to lose. Will see how they develop as they have an extremely tough schedule so they will no where they fit in the grand scheme of things in a short period of time.

As for the basketball part of the game... SK won the first 8 min. By 5 or 6. The second 8 min saw them use a lot of the bench and SK won by 2. The 3rd 8min is where things got a bit physical and the episode happened as stated above. Haven't been around 10th region refs much at all, but a lot of the calls and "non calls" kind of put me in mind of a good old down home 8th region game at Gallitin or Oldham.LOL IMO it wasn't the physicality of play that upset coach Stowers, but the very obvious one sidedness on the part of the officials at times. But that is a whole other topic that I'm sure will be visited again and again as always... SK did lose that period by 1. Actually that period seemed to wake up SK and they reeled off the first 12pts of the final period and won it by 12 or 14. Brossart does have a tough scrappy team. What they lack in size and talent they make up for in hustle and toughness.

I have to correct some incorrect statments, (keeping in mind that both teams played very hard and it was ONLY a scrimmage.)Brossart won first and second periods by 2 pts each. Third won by sk(don't recall how many) as well as winning the 4th big. Both teams played many young players and I know BB has at least 3 players on IR and sk probably does as well. No sense risking further injury in a game like that.

SK 14-12 in qtr 1. Brossart by 1 in 2nd. SK by 8 in 3rd after Brossart leading midway thru. 4th was all SK with subs flowing freely.. Shannon did not participate last night. Nienaber played but did not start. Young still on IR

Also feel compelled to say it's great for any of us to root for our teams and bring positive attention to girls basketball in general....BUT..would hope as adults none of us imply that throwing an elbow in anger is positive ...Roller Derby has enforcers

100% correct on the elbows.. But I haven't seen any comments on here supporting that kind of behavior. What I did see and agree with is that the refs need to take control BEFORE it gets to that point. I know these scrimmages are kind of "practice" for them too, but if I'm correct they do get paid for being there and should treat it like a regular game. It looked at times like a typical game at SOAS if you know what I mean

No Not implying throwing an elbow is positive at all . If the ref’s do not do a collective good job of "Control" it is up to the players to defend themselves. Now I am NOT condoning throwing elbows or pushing or anything else play within the rules!!. The reference to "enforcer" is the same as referencing a player as a "Banger" no one wants to mix it up with them. They know it is going to be physical contact. Nothing more nothing less.

Your good. No apologies needed. I have absolutely no reason to be disappointed...at all.

 

Number one. I just thought it was ironically funny. And it still is.

 

Number two. It's thanksgiving. I am off work, with family, and getting ready to strap a feed bag on. It is hard to be disappointed in that situation.

 

Number three. If SK got frustrated when physical play was matched or dished back, that is not disappointing, that is enlightening. It would certainly not be the typical Stowers teams of the last few years.

You have some great points but def. disagree with a few.

 

There really shouldn't be any irony as my whole point of the post was that I think it was somewhat misled regarding that SK was crying of physical play. At least that's the way I have read into it.

3rd point; I don't think you really understood the context. The players weren't complaining about the physicality of the game. I think both teams actually handled it pretty well and I'm not sure many teams would want to be involved in that level of physical contact. However, from a basketball standpoint, you really aren't accomplishing much when the defense fouls every possession because their are no consequences and it turns into a free throw contest. So I think at one point there were probably double digit possessions without a field goal being attempted due to fouls. I'm not referring to touch fouls either. This is where kids from both sides started becoming frustrated and attempting to defend themselves. This is why I stated that you don't get a lot out of this simply because it was a mug fest. I blame that on the officials and I think that is what SK coaching staff's entire point was with pulling the players.

 

I don't put the blame on Brossart or SK. I think Brossart is going to have an excellent year if their guards hold up and their Bigs stay out of foul trouble. I also think SK is going to have a tremendous year and look much better than last years version. They rebound better, shoot better, handle the ball better and move better. The question is whether or not their defense will develop into a better form of previous teams.

We know these two do not like each other very much..sounds like intensity in mid season form already
