Not when your coach outfitted the defense with black mesh jerseys.? When it's 90+ (and there weren't as many heat rules), it was hot regardless of the type of jersey you wore. There were a lot of teams where I'm from that in the 80's that wore similar (with a little nicer printing) as game jerseys. The worst were the even older, 3/4 sleeve nylon/durene or cotton/wool jerseys that were not only hot, but absorbed moisture like a towel making them hot, heavy and uncomfortable in the summer. I had the privalege of wearing those in the early 80's in my Pop Warner league.

I would be surprised if schools would allow a waiver. Waivers are typically worth only as much as the sheet of paper they are printed on (which isn't much). If something truly awful were to happen, a waiver isn't likely to offer much protection. Waivers may make people and organizations feel safe, but if you have deep pockets, and something bad happens on your watch, a waiver isn't going to automatically stop a lawsuit. Not to mention that if all don't sign it (there will be at least some, if not many who don't) you'll still need to use an approved , secure communication tool to communicate with the non-waiver signing group. Which means you'll need to send messages through multiple platforms, effectively doubling your work, even if only one person doesn't sign the waiver. Extra work for little return is not exactly a beacon of efficiency in a coaches already busy day.

Remind was the app of choice for my school district. I've not been able to find anything to confirm that they do sell information, and they do explicity state that they do not sell or share information. I do know that they share information with other 3rd party platforms that help them do business, ie for service, support and messaging. That being said, do you really believe the social media platforms are safer and more secure? I've not heard of any instances of Remind causing an issue (I'm not saying this HASN'T happened, just that I'm not aware of, and haven't been able to find any such instances), but you don't have to look very hard and most likely know at least a few people who have had an issue with social media accounts getting spammed, hijacked etc. Personally, for me, my experience with Remind was VERY positive and allowed me to establish solid communication protocols, establish boundaries and maintain stricter control over communication without making communication difficult. Social media can sometimes be the wild, wild west of communication and there's nothing worse than waking up to a "message" an angry parent or fan decided to share on your teams social media account that either should have remained private or not shared in the first place. I used the Remind app for many years as the main communication tool, and never had an issue. Personally, I was never a fan of using Social Media apps as communication channels to distribute and collect information. Remind offered a level of privacy and efficiency and I can't remember a single time where it failed over a 7 or 8 year period coaching two different sports. I always made it a personal policy to not connect with parents/players using social media after having issues with an angry parent or two in the early days of social media. Really, these apps are the best way to keep conversations private, as well as to reach players and parents quickly and efficiently, and allows you more control over messaging.

Giving time back to athletes and families is always good. Mandating a break is the only way breaks will happen, as coaches don't want to fall behind their peers...."If school "A" down the road is holding practice, then we need to practice too. If kids want to train on their own, great. If they want to rest, travel, or whatever, that's great as well. Losing a week of practice isn't going to cost anyone a scholarship or a chance to play in college. Frankly, I'd be all for having a month long dead period, say June 20th to July 20th (or something along those lines), with fall sports able to start official practices on August 1st.

I don't think hanging on too long was the issue. The issue was his lack of willingness to evolve as the game changed. Had he been willing to change with the game as it changed, this might have had a different outcome. Even so, he still won a lot of games, and his teams were always hard to beat. In the end, many coaches end up usually coaching a few more years than they should have.

Is this a job that would get Brad Arlinghaus back into coaching? Cov Cath Grad, won a ton of games at Connor. I know he quit to spend more time with his kids, but I think he'd be at least on the radar.

This is just short of an ejection, and is really a warning. The umpire "restricts" the coach to the dugout. Typically this only happens to the head coach, who is supposed to be the only person who speaks to the umpire. Most umpires will use this as a first punishment instead of ejecting. Assistant coaches sometimes get restricted, but often, since they aren't supposed to say anything to the umpire, they will get ejected with no warning.

Baseball has become an elitist sport. Those schools who have players who participate in high end travel ball, from larger metro areas are going to be hard for smaller, less well heeled schools to beat. Travel ball has killed local, community based baseball which used to allow teams from smaller areas to compete. Access to good, travel programs requires location, access and money. Soccer is very similar. The popularity of basketball in the state will occasionally allow smaller, more rural schools to assemble a competitive team every now and then if they get a once in a generation type talent. And the district/regional format for sports, regularly keeps really good teams out of the big dance while allowing less competitive teams in.

And while these games are fun and nice, they really don't mean all that much. Is it honor to be selected? For sure. But I'm not ripping kids who decide not play, especially those who are moving on to bigger things. If they tweaked something, weren't feeling well, or decided one game was enough and decided not to play, then so be it.

It's HARD to make All State in Kentucky (and even harder in other, bigger states). There's probably 3400-3500 high school baseball players in Kentucky and there are only 60-70 that make 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team all state. That's around 2%. There is going to be a few that get left off the list, and it by no means is a snub if a good player doesn't make it. The all state teams truly are (and should be) an elite list.

It's crazy how long he has been coaching at Covington Catholic. I'm 55 years old, retired from coaching and didn't start playing organized baseball until the year AFTER he started coaching. I simply can't fathom doing one job (especially coaching high school sports) that long.

What a huge shock, and such a tremendous loss for NKY football. Can't imagine what his family, players, staff and the community of Hebron are going through right now.

I'm guessing this is a case of where these guys were freelancing and doing their own thing. Officials likely wouldn't be enforcing it (how would you if you had to). I also think, what you were seeing was not necessarily a true, pre snap blitz....likely guys just hitting gaps on the snap.

I've been involved in All-Star games as a coach and player in two different states (PA as a coach, and Delaware as a player), and neither allowed blitzing. Both also had two weeks of 2 a day practices in a camp format. Delaware's Blue/Gold game is played at the University of Delaware and is Upstate vs Downstate, and is played for charity, benefiting children and young adults with disabilities. Each player (and cheerleader and band member as they are involved as well)gets paired up with a Buddy in January and spends some time with them, which is a great experience for both. I stayed in touch with my buddy for many years until he passed away. It's a really fun event and gets a great crowd, and even some of the top players still participate. Obviously, it's a statewide event on a much bigger scale than the NKAC event and a true all-star event where players are selected by position. At this point, the NKAC needs a bigger hook and a way to make this game more meaningful to get a better turnout... In the 20+ years I've been in the area, the game seems to have grown less and less popular. I don't think moving it to December would help at all...cold weather for practice and the game wouldn't help to get more players or fans to participate. The lack of coverage and information that's available about the game doesn't help....it seems like every year it like pulling teeth to get rosters. 3 days of practice also isn't ideal to ensure a competitive game. It seems like changes will need to be made or I can envision a time, maybe not all that far in the future where the game no longer is held, which would be a shame.

It happens all the time, and every year it seems someone gets beat trying to save their ace. That being said, it looks like it wasn't that bad of move....one run isn't going to win you very many games.

I do think this is a nice event. But it's just not that big of a deal outside of the players and families participating. It's not a collection of the top players, as many of those who are continuing their career choose not to play. There's no real rivalry at play...I know some states (at least the one where I'm from divides the teams by North and South and the two regions really don't like each other). Plus you've got family vacations, graduations and a ton of other things going on. I'm not really sure what can be done to promote it better or make it a bigger event.

I was a little concerned about placing weight on my back too, but the packs by Goruck (and I'm guessing by others who make ruckpacks) are nicely padded and when correctly adjusted allow the pack to spread the weight out evenly while held closely to your back. And since I don't run with it ( I do sometimes do a shuffle) the pack sit firmly, doesn't move and doesn't give me any trouble at all. Also, the weight of the pack also forces me into a more upright posture, and with the core development that comes with it, has improved my overall gait. When I get into heavier loads (about once a week I carry 50lbs) it puts more stress on my shoulders and traps than my back. If I were to start running more, or doing functional type workouts while weighted, I would definitely prefer a weighted vest, and will likely be getting one soon. It's hard to believe, but I'm getting the same type of results that I used to get lifting heavy weight 5 times a week. If I ever get back to coaching, I will definitely figure out a way to incorporate these types of workouts into team conditioning.

I don't use a weighted vest, but I've been training with a rucksack/weighted backpack, carrying 3-5 miles 5 or 6 days a week. I can tell you it's a game changer in terms of fitness. I put anywhere from 20-50lbs in it, and sometimes carry a 10-15lb kettle bell in my hand (switching hands every 1/4 mile or so). I only lift light 3 days a week, about 30 minutes per session, and rucking has helped me build muscle, stamina and raised my fitness level significantly. I can definitely see it having value for football training. I've bought most of my stuff from Goruck....the gear is pricey, but it's comfortable, and very durable. I have a rucksack, several sand filled training bags, medicine balls, ruckplates and kettlebells. The way the sand shifts introduces more difficulty into all of the regular lifting moves. Not only that, but constant physical stress also affects teams mentally in terms of being able to learn, retain, and assess information. You also reach a point of diminishing returns, especially as the season wears on. Rest and recovery are just as important and are required in order to grow physically.

Scott did beat HC this season and has a few solid arms. GRC can also be tough. It’s a really tough draw for HC. Campbell County got a great draw and I would say they are probably the favorite.

I don't entirely agree, but I also don't think you're all that wrong either. You absolutely cannot win without talent/good players. But the difference when two talented teams play is often coaching.
