brooksville Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It looks like the Kenton County School District is starting its district's athletic dead period four days prior to the KHSAA Dead Period. The KCSD is June 21 to July 9. KHSAA is June 25 to July 9. 1
RedHawk Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I believe Covington Catholic is also going with the June 20th date to start Dead Period.
I gotta go to work Posted June 19 Posted June 19 This was to give coaches/athletes/families an extra full weekend. Great idea, especially for those who play multiple sports and have been very busy in June. 3
Breds82 Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Is there any science that proves it helps more than could hurt athletes? Just curious. I agree it's a nice break after and before the respective grinds on multi-sport athletes. 1

In other words, each athlete has a couple of weeks where they are not "institutionalized" by the program. So mentally, I don't think there is any question. Physically, time to yourself is where you build discipline and discipline separates the men from the boys. 2 1

Mandating a break is the only way breaks will happen, as coaches don't want to fall behind their peers...."If school "A" down the road is holding practice, then we need to practice too. If kids want to train on their own, great. If they want to rest, travel, or whatever, that's great as well. Losing a week of practice isn't going to cost anyone a scholarship or a chance to play in college. Frankly, I'd be all for having a month long dead period, say June 20th to July 20th (or something along those lines), with fall sports able to start official practices on August 1st. 5
Breds82 Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I agree with the break. You have guys that play all 3 sport and as soon as baseball is over you’re going right into football for a short time then summer basketball until dead period. I agree with Guru that the down time is where the disciplined guys will work out on their own to maintain or kept gaining what they’ve achieved so far. It’s hard to train on your own when you’ve been “forced” to since January. 2

For athletes that still want to do a little bit over the break that's a good asset for them. Most athletes find a way to atleast stay in shape for that 2-3 weeks because if they don't when they come back from the break it's treacherous on their cardio. 1
New Colonel Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Every state should have a mandatory dead period like KY. Dead period is what I loved most coaching in KY over OH. It was nice that everyone, coaches, players and other school staff had this common time off. It's was easy to schedule vacations. Coaching in Ohio, whenever you took your family vacation, you felt guilty because the program kept going on. When players did too, others made them feel guilty as well. Dead period is awesome and gives everyone time to recharge the batteries just in time for the super hot days to kick in. 2

Was just talking to a guy from Indiana yesterday and he was talking about how he use to jam his whole summer into their dead period. 1

Summer going into my Sophomore year my family did a two day road trip to Wrigley Field. Myself and older brother had to tell Coach Schneider, he had no issue (especially with me) but we both had that since of guilt that we were "skipping" practice while our teammates were putting the work in. Imagined or not the guilt was there. The following year, I was working hard to just get some meaningful minutes, my family went to Michigan for vacation and I stayed home. I didn't want to miss my opportunity. 2

Good on them. 👏🏼👏🏼 Give these high schoolers some time to enjoy the summer, their friends, and their families without having conditioning and practices to worry about. 4
