After a slow start, Mitch Meyer is on a tear. He is squaring up the ball and hitting it hard to all fields. I am very happy for him. It's not easy being the only senior in the every day lineup. He is a fantastic leader. His positive attitude and leadership will have a great effect on the program long after he graduates.

I can think of one place where I've seen this happen - Ludlow. They have that cement wall behind the plate and last year a strike 3 went by the catcher and immediately ricocheted(sp?) back to the pitcher who threw to first for the out. But, you're correct. That's a rare play.

Birds win their 2nd of the day in Jim Dougherty Memorial Tournament. Birds freshmen really contributed. Mitchell Jones wins his first varsity start going all the way with 9 K's. Luke Hennigan drives in Jakey Whitford for the first run of the game. Hennigan also threw out a runner stealing. Juniors Gabe Schultz, Quentin Murray, and Hector Molina with big hits as well during the Birds 4 run 5th inning. Game was 0-0 through 4 1/2. Owen's pitcher did a nice job. Nice win for the Birds. They move on to tomorrow's semifinal against Beechwood at 10AM @ HP.

HHS won 3-2. Nice effort by the Birds. Birds had seven players pitch one inning each. Lots of contributions by players from all four classes. I'm biased, but I believe the future is bright.

I did twice (as 8th and 9th grader). I guess SG doesn't play in it anymore.

I have heard that SWOL is permitting them to enter the American League/Division.

One additional point that illustrates why these boys will be great players in high school (and likely beyond). The Wildcats showed up at the field for their first game in the Lexington tournament, and it is a high school field. So, that means 60'6" mound and 90' bases. Home plate looked about as far to the backstop as it does at GABP. The team they were playing from Nashville had played 60/90 all year. All year the Wildcats played 54/80. 8 of the 11 players played high school ball, but none had played those distances since mid-May. And, 3 of the boys had never played those distances. A lot of teams would have folded right there. The boys never blinked. They scored 4 in the bottom of the first on their way to the win. It's that kind of determination that I look back on that tells me that these boys will go far. Great job Wildcats!

Interesting. When I played there, the visitors were behind the basket on the one end (like Vandy). Career high that night - 16 points (as a sophomore no less). Still got beat by about 20. Good memory though.

Many guys before my time say Goodwin was the best. I agree that Corey was the best. I played with his Dad, and he and Gary Lemons were a tough 1-2 punch. Up until Corey, I would say Ken Hedges. He was a beast. Played at both Thomas More and NKU. Still say he was the best post player I ever saw play at SG. His brothers Mike, Marc, and Mitch could play as well.

The dark ages still live in District 22 :-) The Bellevue Vets Hurricanes made it to the City Tournament in all three years they played together. In fact, they made it to the Regional Finals this year as a C1 team.

Terry was my knothole baseball coach when I was a boy. He was able to provide a great balance between having fun and teaching us to excel as players. In a similar vein to Greendevil72, it is people like Terry that influenced me to coach knothole baseball so that I could provide a similar positive influence to the kids. I am very sad to hear this, and my prayers and thoughts are with Terry and his family.

If Steve is leaving and/or not interested, I would like to see them do what they have done with the last two hires. Go young and go with someone with no ties to the community.

As a Silver Grove alum, I am so pleased to see this young man get the opportunity to chase his dream. I played with a number of great players from the Grove, but in my opinion, he is the best I ever saw play for the Green and White. Corey, finish the deal. By that, I mean, use your athletic gifts as a springboard to obtain a college degree and do wherever it is that you choose to do in life. Congratulations and best of luck!!!

I don't post much but now is as good a time as any. I am an old St. Philip's kid who went to the Grove. Therefore, I looked forward to the Bishop Brossart games (we played at least twice each year) more than any other. Indeed, I played against friends, knothole teammates, and even neighbors. In fact, you threw out the records when we played. It was a war, but not in a bad way. You just did not want to look at those guys in the summer after being swept. But, it was nice to do it in the alternative:ylsuper: When I was in high school, BB and SG were on equal footing. Over time, things changed. BB has grown into a much different animal than they were then. Note, I say that with no animosity. The Catholic boy in me welcomes the opportunity to boys and girls now available in the Southern end of Campbell County. Nevertheless, I lament the time that my alma mater had their rival - and make no bones about it - at one time, those were the two games that we looked forward to and the games were highly competitive. However, I digress. I was a kid when Kenny Hedges was the best player that I ever saw wear the green and white. However, the torch has been passed. As good as Corey's Mom and Dad were (I went to school with both), their son remains the single best athlete that I have ever seen play for the Grove. To #4, congratulations on a great career. For you and all of the seniors, best of luck and this alum wishes you all the best.

God I hope so. I was in 5th grade, the year was 1978, and the Trains had beaten CCHS to go to the Regionals for the first time since my Dad played in the late '50's. Of course, they drew #1 Holmes with Schloemer. So what did they do? At the half, the score was tied and even going into the 4th Quarter, things were tight. Unfortunately, Holmes' depth took over, and they put it away. That same Holmes team would lose in the state final to Shelby Co. Fast forward to my freshman year and we had a solid team. We drew Scott and we had beaten them pretty soundly earlier in the year. We came out flat, but made a nice run and took the lead late in the game. However, Scott made a flip shot in the lane with less than 10 seconds to go, and we lost by one. I didn't know it then, but that would be the closest I would get to make it to the regionals. Years later as an alum, I watched them lose a heartbreaker to CCHS (2000 I think?). So, it's been 29 years since a trip to the Regionals. Man, I would like to see them go again. Keep working hard Trains. Just one time, I would like to make the trip to the Fieldhouse. Go Big Trains!
