Hey, all credit goes to the Murray defense, but we moved the ball all night long only to self destruct....not something Mayfield usually does...I 'll be interested to see the stats on this one..

This was one of the strangest games I ever witnessed...a real Friday the 13th type of game. Murray had 18 points and 2 first down at the half. Mayfield was incredibly flat to start the game...zero energy. After an 80 yard TD run, an interception, and a blocked punt, the Cardinals found themselves down 18-0. Mayfield returned the kick for a touchdown and the comeback was on. Fantastic job by the Cardinal defense tonight....the final stats are going to show just how good they played tonight. We always celebrate a win over Murray.

Well done, sir. Question, how old is the Mayfield/Murray rivalry?

Wikipedia has a list of the oldest rivalries in the land...which, by my count, puts the Mayfield/Tilghman rivalry as the 84th oldest rivalry in the nation.

Mayfield and Tilghman were in the same class until 1975...1974 was the last game Mayfield and PT played that had post season implications on the line. By the way, the Cardinals won that game 17-2.

One of the reasons that makes this game so special is that it involves everyone...not just the coaches and players. Some of the traditions have ended...like, painting the downtown store windows on the Sunday before Tilghman week...I loved doing that when I was in school. I was on the cross country team, and on game day, we were excused from school on that day so that we could physically run the game ball from Paducah back to Mayfield...about 25-30 miles depending on where we would begin the run in Paducah. One year, before we started running, we drove over to Paducah Tilghman high school. Now, we were in the back of Coach Leahy's pick-up with our red warmups on. We drove right to the front of the school, and laid down on the horn. We were shouting "Go Big Red" and it caused the Tilghman students to run to the windows. They were hanging out of the windows all across the front of the school...we stirred them up to the point that we had to get out of there...it was all in good fun and school spirit. I remember meeting the bicyclers on old 45 (now its 1241) and we stopped traffic in both directions while we all threw the football around while yelling "Beat Tilghman". Paducah, at one time, also had students riding bikes from Paducah to Mayfield, and runners that ran the football from Mayfield back to Paducah...all of that has ended except that I think Mayfield still has students that ride bicycles on that day....sooooo much fun...such great memories.

Just some random thoughts... The comment was made in an earlier post that PT is more athletic...I agree. But, that is nothing new...they almost always are. Some of the scariest high school players I have ever seen played for the Big Blue Tornado...and we still didn't flinch. This one, like many before it, probably will be close just because it is the rivalry that it is. Mayfield has proven in this seven year dominance that they are much more disciplined than Tilghman, and it has made a huge difference. We also have played great defense, and it is in this area where we will be tested. I have great respect for the Blue Tornado and realize that we can lose this game...but I am going to Pick the Big Red to win a close one...one of those close games where discipline can be a deciding factor...Mayfield 38 PT 31

I went to that game, and we were the home team that year so we had the covered side of old cardinal stadium. Before the game was over, almost the entire fan base from Pburg was also under the covered side because it was pouring down rain. I thought the Blackcats were the biggest high school team I had ever seen...they looked like college players. I thought we were in trouble right then. We stayed behind most all the game 12-0, and that was because Pburg missed two extra points that were not even close...HORRIBLE kicking game, and it cost them the title because the Big Red Machine roared back to take a 13-12 lead late in the game. Pburg drove down the field with time running out, but a big play was negated by a penalty, and their only hope was to kick very long field goal....we were already celebrating because we knew their kicker could not make an extra point. Well, they had an amazing QB, and he attempted the field goal. When he kicked it...I'll be honest, I thought it was right between the uprights...it looked really good, but then I saw the officials waving their arms, the real celebration was on...we danced in the pouring down rain and we didn't even care. Great memory.

I really can't add much because it has already been said, but I do have a couple of thoughts about playing at Ft. Campbell. First of all, I can honestly say that I have never been to a game where EVERYONE in the vehicle had to have an ID with your picture on it, the driver had to have proof of insurance, registration, a signed report card from the seventh grade, and at least one of the shoestrings from his first pair of baby shoes. When we were trying to leave after the game had ended, many drove back to the same gate that we had come in, which I was told was the only gate that allowed you onto the base, well, it was locked up and barricaded...no signs, no traffic person...nothing. So there was this huge line of cars all making uturns trying to find their way off of the base. I just found it rather unusual. And just so nobody misunderstands, I was having a little fun earlier with the entrance requirements. I know the world is a different place and our armed forces deserve all the security we can give them. Great win for the red birds, and good luck to the falcons on your season...looks like it could be a really good one.

no cupcakes for the cardinals this year...this will make us better...players will have to grow up quickly, and that's a good thing. I'll take Mayfield by 10 pts. but that's mostly because I have on my Big Red foster grants. :walk:

^ Wow, that's great respect that you are giving the Mayfield program, VOR. I respect your opinion as much as anybody's when it comes to nky football. Know this, we live in far western ky, but we are aware of the great programs that populate the nky area. Year in and year out, you guys produce some of the finest teams in the state...and when Beechwood does get over the hump and defeat my Cardinals....we will NOT consider it an upset.

I personally think Beechwood, Newcath, and Highlands get to the state championship. I guess I'm putting a lot of stock in Conner or SK also making it. Hope I'm right. Just curious as to why you think Beechwood will get past Mayfield this year? Not trying to hijack a thread, and if that question belongs in its own thread then I will go there. But you sound rather confident about it, and I was just really wanting to know why.

Wow, I have not heard about this. I assume we will get to see him tomorrow night at the Milan scrimmage.

What about a combination of the schools that consolidated....like maybe the Purple Pirate Hounds

Hmmm. Really? We obviously don't see eye to eye on this one. And I wholeheartedly agree with toothpick in that the line play has definitely favored the "slower" Cardinals.

Ten years is a "Run" not a "Dynasty"...a dynasty takes decades to build. So, if you are looking at the top dynasties (sp?) in Kentucky, then you look for the teams that have been winning for decades. Look and see which teams were winning state titles in the seventies, in the eighties, in the nineties, all the way through last year...those are your dynasty programs. Now, I'm a Mayfield fan, so of course Im putting my Cardinals on the list. But when I think of the greatest high school football dynasty in Kentucky...I firmly believe that list starts with Highlands...with all respect to the other great programs in our state.

Here goes... Not in order, Johnathan Jackson... No explanation is really necessary. Joe Prince... 1st team All American his senior year...Injured while playing at UK, or IMO, he had a real shot at playing on Sundays. David Fowler... He was dangerous back in the 60's...who knows what kind of numbers he would put up in the current Cardinal style of play...He DID play on Sundays after a record setting career at Memphis. It's really hard to pick just three... so many to choose from.
