As week #4 rolls around, the 3-0 Mayfield Cardinals find themselves in familiar territory, ranked atop the state in the BGP polls and have even earned a little love from Dave Cantrell’s little smart pill machine rolling in at #19 in the entire state despite Cantrell’ machine having the Cardinals incorrectly at 2-1, an apparent error his little machine got from an incorrect score posting Saturday that had Tilghman as the winner of the 100TH tilt between Mayfield and Tilghman. The Cardinals are a impressive 46-2 over the past 3 seasons which ties them with Highlands for the best record in that time period. Mayfield is also currently riding a 17 game winning streak, second to only Bowling Green who has won over 30 games in a row.

 

The Cardinals victory Saturday was their 8th in a row setting another milestone in the series that began in 1911. Tilghman’s longest streak is 6 from 1942 through 1947. Mayfield has won 15 of the last 20 meetings between the two schools. Saturday nights win saw Mayfield take an unexpected route to victory as they saddled up senior strong man running back Stu Mills and rode him like Sea Biscuit all night long. Mills rushed 41 times for 183 yards. A feat that sent a message across the state that Mayfield has a lot more than just the arm of star quarterback Jake Guhy. Guhy quietly went 9-17 for 117 yards with no picks and 1 touchdown while also rushing for a touchdown. On the season Guhy is 43 of 65 for 681 yards with 8 Touchdowns passes and 2 interceptions. Many fans had flash backs of Jonathan Jackson as they watched Mills bull doze his way through the Tilghman defense. The Cards JV prevailed over PT this week 19-7 to remain undefeated on the year and the 8th Grade Cards also defeated Tilghman last week.

 

This week the Cardinals find themselves again facing a ancient rival in Murray High. The #9 ranked (BGP) Tigers come it to town at 1-2 after a tough 3 point loss to 5A #6 Graves County. The Tigers also lost their season opener to a very good Bryan Station after leading at the half. The last Murray win in this rivalry came back in the 1A playoffs in 1997 in a shocking 7-0 win off a kickoff return to start the game. Mayfield drove into the Tiger red zone several times but were turned away each time. Prior to that victory, the Tigers last beat Mayfield in the early 1970’s. After moving to 2A several years ago, Murray stopped playing Mayfield until 2010 when Coach Steve Duncan took over the Tiger helm. Last years game began on Friday night but was stopped with a weather delay forcing Mayfield to return Saturday to finish the game, a fairly lopsided Cardinals win.

Look for this years game to be close for awhile before the Cardinals take control in the second half.
