I agree with you though, some of these spread teams can really run the ball ala, Florida and West Virginia. However, I will argue until the cows come home that not all schools have the talent to do such things. I think that style requires more talent at all positions. But it really is a thing of beauty when ran well. Hey, I'm a big fan of Nevada's pistol. I wonder when we'll see that more often. I saw LCA use it some this year.

Well put Doc. You can be a member of my camp any day. I strongly agree, the defenses they are a changing. Not a big deal to see a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 now days as a base. Imagine seeing that 9 or 10 years ago...

In all honesty, I am a strong believer in finding a system that works with your athletes. The spread stuff is very popular right now and seems to be "spreading", pun intended. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum as a big fan of the double wing and varieties of it. I do have an interesting question though: How many of you guys think that a flashy spread it out offense is more appealing to the fans and administration when compared to a double tight double wing that runs 80-90% of the time? I personally love watching a ground and pound game, and winning is winning. However, I know a lot of folks (usually grandstand coaches that base what they want to see in high school off of what they see on Saturday and Sunday) like to see it aired out.

I was always confused when I was in high school and went to watch Beechwood play and saw 60 to 70 strong on their sidelines. I agree, it can apply to Beechwood. Honestly, I don't understand enough about how that all works in the places with so many independent school in one area, therefore I won't really say anything about it, but you do bring up a great point.

I guess most of us can see the argument by Rockmom. I was unaware Jefferson Co. did this. And like I said 6A is 6A. However, when we look at these smaller counties, beyond Jefferson and Fayette, we have a problem. Just look at county or city populations. The divisons were set to equalize this problem. I think adding 2 classes was meant to help, and maybe they have to an extent. But when you are sitting in a town of less than 7,000 people, with a small 1A high school, how can they honestly say they are in the same talent pool as a Lexington or Louisviile school that gets to "pick" their kids. I guess with no matter what we all think and say, private schools are going to defend their right to continue to do what they do, and public schools are going to continue to call it out as unfair. I do wonder why no private school representative has ever came out and said, "Yes, I would like a private school playoff bracket!" Do they think it would be unfair? Maybe the competition is a little too tough? In all fairness, there are many public school folks that are just fine playing a private school, and feel that the better team will just win.

Well, either way, I'm sure the Taylor Co. coaches are salivating over the possibilities with him...

I feel like the hardest blowback from the recruiting scandals are felt at the lower levels. Granted, 6A is dominated by Trinity and St.X, but when you look at the 1A and 2A levels, snagging just a couple of good kids can change the results of an entire season. At the lower levels, a few athletes make a much bigger impact! I feel bad for teams like Hazard, that played their guts out against LCA. Being 1A Hazard has a small, unselective population. When they have to go against the best from Lexington, that just doesn't give a level playing field.

Oddly enough, I'm not that surprised. I think a place like Nicholasville would be a nice place to live, and the program, IMO is a good/determined staff away from being turned around. Looking at the success of Anderson county last year shows that the area is ripe for success. Plus, East Jess has had some success at the middle school level, so the talent pool is probably pretty good. Probably just a case of having a lot of talent walking the halls. If someone was determined enough and committed to building it up from the 6th grade level, good things could happen. With the middle school feeding directly into the high school, that opportunity is there to build EXACTLY what the head guy wants from the ground up. Maybe I'm just too much of an idealist, but it could happen.

I think they will be going at it again with Campbellsville for the right to the district title. Both teams were very young this year and will be returning a lot of talent for 1A ball. Their playoff game against C-ville was one of the most exciting 2nd halves of football I've ever watched. Good luck to the Jackets in 2008.

Funny how that works out sometimes. If it were a few years down the road, I might would go after this spot, seems like it just needs a completely fresh overhaul. I think of the success Anderson Co. this year, and how they rose from the ashes. Something like that could happen their. From what I've seen in other sports, including their middle school football, they have some talent, they just don't seem to get the best out of them.

So how much of a staff would the new coach be inheriting, and how much would he have to bring in?

Well, I could see them having to even head to other states for a few non-district games. The whole contract thing might hurt them, but I wouldn't worry about having a great non-district schedule. Just get what you can.

What's the deal with this job? As someone looking from the outside, I think this would be a great opportunity for a young, up and coming coach. But, man the history of the last coaches cutting and running, especially during the season, would make me nervous to even apply. Do any insiders know some details about this situation?

Is there any truth to a rumor I heard about a KY college (maybe Georgetown) Defensive Coordinator (I think) applying for the Madison Southern position? Anybody heard any fresh rumors on this spot? I know that with it being a pretty well paid position there has to be some really interesting ones being thrown into the mix. I'm not from there but, have some interest in what happens. I live just outside that area. I would add that from what I know of Mark Scenters, he would be an excellent hire. He's been a big part of Madison Central for quite a while, and it would be nice to see a hard working assistant finally get his break. Wasn't he in the running for one of the Laurel jobs a few years ago?? The only other name that has come up on this site has been Brumley. From what I know, Brumley does have a strong football mind and seems to know his X's and O's, but I could understand the argument about starting fresh there.

I think the biggest point is this: Wrestling offers an opportunity to a different type of athlete. Not everyone is a team sport kid. Maybe they're too small for football (how many 103lbs kids are a success in varisty football???), basketball has a limit of how many kids can be on a team, and maybe they are a physical kid that doesn't think a little contact should be a foul... Our middle school program has some athletes from other sports, especially football...however, it provides a niche for the misfits of other sports and simply allows more opportunity for kids. And yes, it should be considered coed. While the interest is not quite as strong as boys show in wrestling, girls wrestling is growing in popularity. Consider that Cumberlands has a collegiate team that had a girl battling for an olympic spot. Girls wrestling will grow and I would be willing to bet that in 15-20 years, it will be as accepted as girls basketball, field hockey, volleyball, even college club rugby.

Your biggest start up cost is a mat. If you're lucky you can find a used one for a reasonable price. After that, singlets and headgear are not really that expensive. Honestly, after the initial money for the mat is fronted, it is one of the cheapest sports a kid can compete in.

I agree, it is nice to see a decision made promptly. Too many schools are waiting around until Feburaury just to start interviews. Only hurts them in the long run in my opinion.

I think the kid made a great choice. At UK of UL he would always be "Rick Robey's boy". Now he will just be another football player at UF. Look forward to seeing how he develops.
