Benzick played in the last regular season game but missed the playoffs due to an argument with his coach. Benzick quit during the argument, but the next day apologized and asked to be reinstated for playoffs. Higgins would not reinstate him, the parents got the JCPS to reinstate him (the kid was wrong in his actions, but not wrong in the reasons), but then the school suspended him for his actions with the coach, so it became a mute point. Long story, but a good kid. Academic now, and not for this thread anyway. You are right in that it probably did cost him the spot, as I know it did on All-District, etc, as Higgins left him off all the ballots.

I agree, you can never cover all the bases, and this was an exceptional year for Kentucky HS Football quality. My only thoughts, and I like the idea of including extra linemen as well, would be leaving off Benzick at OT (Rivals 3 star and great season) and Brandon Newman (4 star). Granted their teams did not make it to championship games, but they had good seasons. Hindsight is always 20/20 and everyone's opinion is just that, their opinion. Congrats to all the kids who made the list and thanks to BGP for the hard work and the opportunity to present our views as well.

who are the head coaches?

Lots of class reunions are held at the regular season game, in increments of every 5 years typically, going back 40 years or so. I know my graduating class has a reunion every 5 years the same weekend as the regular season game. Most guys from out of town bring their wives, families, etc., so that does add a lot to the attendance figures as well. Others come every year from out of town, which is easy to plan for the regular season game, but not much time to plan with playoffs. Lots of reasons for the difference in attendance, this is just a part of it, although a pretty substantial part of it.

I do not see Higgins leaving to go to Male. The FC administration is determined to improve football and he has a lot of slack there that he would not get at Male. Plus, with the talent he has coming back, I think he stays where he is at. In addition, I agree with the statement about Redman getting his 300 wins and then stepping out.

I will allow that Beatty's playoff record of 30-2 (94%) is way ahead of most everyone on the list. Add in his 3 playoff wins this year and the percentage increases more. Lampley's playoff record was 33-8, still a major success ratio.

I still go with Dennis Lampley of Trinity as one of the best coaches I ever saw work the sidelines. He is 138-21 in his tenure at Trinity and quit still a young man to take the AD job. Percentage is 87%, but includes 5 State championships and 3 undefeated seasons in a row.

O' Catholic was the big rival of Higgins when he was at Trigg County. The knock was always that Higgins teams would win, get to the playoffs, and could never get by Catholic. With Male in his District now, it could become the same, although FC has a good team this year and has a shot Friday night. I expect Redman however to have his troops ready and do not look to them to give up 40 points to FC like the last game. Male put up 50 the same night and won. Could be a heck of a game.

Male wins by 20. Male will become Higgin's Louisville version of Owensboro Catholic.

touche'. I stand humbled before you but I needed some good info and trying to get it off the KHSAA or the respective school code got a little jumbled. I would appreciate just letting the situation pan out and not start the guessing games. thanks.

Just a hypothetical question. Let's say a school suspends a student/athlete for 3 days for a disciplinary action. Now let's say the coach calls him at home and tells him to be at practice each day regardless of the suspension. He tells the kid to park next door, wait until 3:30 when most everyone is gone, and then come in the side door. The kid does so, at his coach's direction, even though he knows he is not allowed on school grounds while suspended. The kid practices every day, never misses a snap, finishes his suspension and plays in Friday night's game. 1) What happens to the kid if this is discovered, what is his punishment? 2) What happens to the coach who required and allowed it?

Yes it is in Courier today. NCAA has stripped Gay of his championships while at Arkansas due to accepting illegal help, etc, from an assistant coach. It involves his test results, accomodations at Arkansas prior to starting school, etc, etc. He may, or may not have been, aware of the violations when it occurred, more story to come.

I have to go with Trinity's facilities as a pure football arena. You can see, hear, etc, from all locations. St. X's facilities are absolutely topknotch and probably the best total athletic complex around, but as a purely football setting, you set too far from the field. I attended one scrimmage game there earlier this year and the visitor stands really do suck. You cannot see over the players head if you set in the middle of the stands. I understand it had something to do with the cemetary behind it and building restrictions. The St. X concessions though had more items than any field I have been at, and being a chowhound, that was impressive to me! I will also agree that John Hardin visitor stands are an embarrassment to that fine school, especially compared to the home side bleachers.

FC killed themselves in the first quarter just like they did with Ryle. Hynes setout the first two series (I guess the penalty for last week's suspension?) and two fumbles and two quick TD's put them down quickly. Total of 4 fumbles and 2 interceptions and failure to stop the big run up the middle. Offensively, once Hynes entered, they moved the ball well and put up a lot of points, and had two TD catches dropped. Good game, starters still on the field at the end of the game, FC could not stop Male running game. They have been practicing a new defensive set for two weeks but I guess it won't come out until playoffs. Until they can stop the run like Ryle and Male, they will not advance. Offense is fine, defense has to make a few stops.

Kudo's to Ryle for a big win. However, the score is not indicative of the FC team, and for FC to be blasted on here is not warranted. QB was suspended by school for 3 days 2 hours before gametime. Their best WR was moved to QB for the game and he has not taken a snap at QB in 3 weeks. Their two best lineman, not just Benzick, were benched for the first half by the coach for a locker room altercation between the two, too much testerone. Those two had practiced for the last two weeks on defense and had to be replaced as well. Punter drops two balls inside the 5, without being touched, just dropped the ball, and QB bad exchanges with RB, again with no contact, twice inside the 10, all leading to touchdowns. Ryle's coaches quickly figured out without Hynes, FC had no passing attack and put 8-9 guys in the box and stopped the run, forcing FC to try to pass. The backup QB, normally a WR, has only thrown 3 passes in his high school career, throws 4 or 5 interceptions, of which 4 resulted in touchdowns either on the runback or a subsequent play. Wheels fell off and no way to recoup. FC is a much better team than showed. FC coach Higgins then decides 2nd half to bench most starters and let other kids play. They will rebound and still be a good football team. I am a Trinity grad and Trinity dad, but I have also watched FC all year as well and they are much better than what was shown on the field Friday. Once the kids found out right before the game who all was not playing, they just seemed to give up before the kickoff.

The two kids with the speed both play DB and are excellent tacklers. Jimmy Welch did not run track last year but hopefully he will this season. They actually had the fastest time in the 4 x 100 state last year in qualifying, 43.28, but only ran a 43.48 in the final to Male's 43.36. In the 4 x 200, they recorded the fastest time in the entire meet at 1:30.44 but were DQ'd for exchanging out of the zone. They won the 4 x 400. Like you say, though, Brackens and Welch were not even on the team. The size of FC's offensive and defensive lines really help though in opening up the running game.

I think, not sure, that only a down lineman, in the neutral zone, can make a cutblock, and then, only on another down lineman. As an example, he could not cut block a linebacker charging up thru the gap. I may be wrong but I think that is correct.

I will only say this. Coach White (30 + years) the Defensive Coord. has prepared very well the last several weeks for Ryle's running game from what I understand. Several new wrinkles not seen this year to date to be introduced at this game. I stick with the Creek, these kids are hungry, big, and fast. I watched a practice on Tuesday night and could not believe the intensity and effort. Then two of the kids stayed after for another 1.5 hours with a personal trainer running, technique, etc. Schedule to date has not been outstanding, but not as bad as some make out. Meade County is now on a roll having won 3 straight and is a pretty good football team, as is Moore now also winnig 3 straight. Southern is a much better team than their record shows and look who they have lost to. FC played two good teams preseason in St.X and Valley, having more than held their own with both. This should be a close game but who knows, that is why they keep score and play the game. Ryle is an excellent team and will also be prepared as well.

Fern Creek wins over a good Ryle team. Fern Creek has been under the radar but is a very good football team with a lot of offensive firepower and excellent defense. Their biggest fans so far have been the opposing coaches they have played. Starters have only played the 2nd half in one game this year, big kids and lots of speed. All 3 of their backs were on the State Relay team that recorded the fastest 4 x 100 time in the state meet last year and won regionals in 4 x 100, 4 x 200, & 4 x 400. Offensive line averages 265.

Last time they played, two years ago, Fern Creek wins 21-20 in the playoffs at Ryle. Last year FC goes 2-8, Ryle goes to Championship game. FC gets new coach, new style, bunch of new players, and now is 6-0. Ryle appears to be very strong again as well. Should be a whale of a game. I know both teams have big district games the following week, but I think the momentum from this game will help them continue. To the Ryle folks, have a safe drive down and back, and we look forward to seeing you!

Friday was in service day for Jefferson County Teachers (started years ago so they could go to St. James Art Fair) and no public school games could be played in Jefferson County. Fern Creek played at Bullitt County, Atherton went to Breckinridge County, and Desales-CAL are both private schools. UL game had nothing to do with it.
