Wow district 1 in 5A has 3 teams ranked in the top 8!! Talk about a tough district, Owensboro, Hoptown and Christian Co. this has got to be the toughest district in 5A this year.

I do not understand the rankings either BG got shutout by 17 in a monsoon so had the weather been better it may have been 40-0 who knows. Owensboro beat one of the best and defending state champs from Indiana so maybe they should be higher. I think the polls are just something you look at in the bathroom and use in case you run out of TP.:lol: As for the best team in the state: until you guys move up and play in 6A with the big boys there is no argument who the best team in the state is. T or X will always be until you beat them or play in their class. You may be the best team in 5A but you will have to move up one more level and win state titles to stake claim to best in the state.

I totallly agree with you there! They have got to get Yante Williams involved in the offense. He is such a dangerous weapon he has to get some touches on offense. He had zero against Owensboro Catholic and that is just not going to cut it. I think they will be ready and they know what is at stake. This is a huge game in the playoff picture this early. Just another little tid bit in the rankings Highlands is #1 and 2-5 is all from western Ky. There are going to be some good playoff games this year in WKY.

Depends on which Owensboro team shows up!!! The one that played Reitz 2 weeks ago? Owensboro win and I will be there to see it. The one that quit after about 8 minutes against Owensboro Catholic? Hoptown wins it and I do not even want to be there to see that!!! Should be a good game and I am sure Joe Prince will get these boys focused on the game at hand and not what happened in the past. I will still say Owensboro wins this one in a close contest. 23-21 on a FG with finally a good snap taking place. :fire:

I would have to wait and see what County can do with a team that has at least won a game in the last 3 years before making that assumption. Evansville Harrison went winless last year and has yet to win this year not a good team to judge by. But I do agree Owensboro has got to step up to the plate and start performing. Cain had to make another TD saving tackle this year against catholic. They have a new long snapper that needs some work so they can capitalize on FG opportunities and not give up scores from punting issues. OHS has given up 3 scores all year and 2 of them are results from the punting game. I think I would have the snapper snap about 300+ balls this week and have the punter back there fielding them so he can get used to catching the ball and getting rid of it. Owensboro had 2 fumbles and 2 INT's and 2 bad snaps one on a FG chance and the other that resulted in a blocked punt and still only gave up 7 points and won the game. All I have to say is the good 5A teams with a box score like this and it is a blowout. Next week is at Hopkinsville and they have put up nearly 100 points in 2 games so the defense better be ready. Hats off to Tre D all that work for all these years and all summer long and to break your femur in the 2nd game my heart goes out to you and get well soon. Now you have to be a leader on the sidelines and keep pushing your teammates to be the best. Hopefully you can make it back to play when it matters most in November and December my friend.

Owensboro is hosting Evansville Reitz in the Border Bowl in week 1 and for those of you that do not know Reitz is the undefeated defending state champs in Indiana. Should be a good test right out of the gate for the new look young Red Devils.

All I know is what I have seen when Owensboro played their JV and Freshman teams. I know that a few years of growth and working out things can change but last year Owensboro beat BG pretty bad in the younger classes. That is what I am going on currently. I know BG is always good always have been but so has Owensboro as well and I would say these 2 teams will always be in the mix every year. I am an Apollo alum as well but have watched Owensboro over the years and they always have talent just like BG. It sure would be nice for it to come down to BG and OHS every year that would mean both teams are going in the right direction.

The west should be very competitive this year. The carpet invite is wide open this year from the west and I look for Owensboro to be a contender with a new look this year. Christian Co. is going to be the team to watch as is BG, I agree until someone beats them but I feel BG's run at the carpet will soon be over as district 1 is going to be the favorite for the next 3 years. All teams are young talented and should put an end to BG going to the pizza box for a few years.

Well good thing for BG this year if it comes down to BG and OHS if I am correct the game will be in BG rather than Rash stadium. If anyone saw the freshman game this year Owensboro put a whooping on BG freshman and hopefully that trend can continue until at least my son is gone.

I would not go that far. No QB, No TE, No WR all gone. The RBs are a plus for BG but they should definately be down from last year for sure. A squeaker against JH in the playoffs and No offense from Owensboro in the semis when BG turned the ball over the first 5 posessions last year. So I think it will be someone out of District 1. Christian Co. Hoptown or Owensboro. Christian Co. the favorite early Hoptown has talent but young as well as Owensboro. Owensboro has speed and also returns All-state DB Yante Williams and a few LBs that will or should be all-staters this year so the defense for Owensboro is not dry from graduation. District 1 will be dominant for at least the next 3 years in my opinion. I am ready for the showdown at the dungeon OHS vs Christian Co. :devil:

I think it will be the usual suspects in the west BG, JH, Owensboro and Christian Co. until someone beats these guys. Christian Co. if true that they did not lose much may be the team to beat early. They have to come to the dungeon to play Owensboro this year in the district game and that is never an easy task. Did not get a chance to see JH last year but have in the past and they are usually pretty good year end and year out. I look for it to be the 4 team mentioned as Hoptown still has some work to do to be in the conversation. I look for Owensboro to be better than people think they will be although they lost 23 seniors that played a very big part in getting the devils back to the front of 5A the boys coming up are no slouches and the JV and Freshman teams at Owensboro have not given many points in the last few years. I look for them to be very explosive and fast like the Owensboro of old but may be a year away from being a true contender. I am going to call it Christian Co and BG for now and when the season starts it may change. One thing I do know is the kicking game in the west of 5A will be fun to watch this year with Max Oldham from BG going after some state records in his senior year and the sophmore kid Trey Cain from Owensboro to see if he can back up what he did last year as a freshman. These 2 are probably the best kickers in the state next to the Merrick kid from Bell Co. who is one step above these 2 right now.

So sorry to hear of the lose to the community your team and his family this has happened way too much here lately with the tragedy of the Apollo kid and now this. Our prayers are for all of you in Ft Thomas and especially Mitch's family during this tough time. I can only imagine how they are feeling with a son the same age words just could not describe how it would affect me. Thinking of you all here in Owensboro.:cry:

Well you got part of that right the Birds will play someone at PJS but I would say they will play someone from the 1st district. Christian Co., or Hoptown most likely I think Owensboro will be a year away from making another run at it.

You beat me to that one because that is what I was going to say too. But from what I understand after this year they will be back in their correct class.

I think Christian Co. May be the team to beat in the western half of 5A the running back they have will be a junior and was very impressive in the playoffs. I also look for Owensboro to not be as bad as people think. Hoptown will also be improved as well. In the Northeast there is only one team until someone beats them and that is Highlands or until the next realignment sends them back to their class. BG will be down some but always has a good team. John Hardin will also be a contendor. I think the reason everyone is talking the western half of the state is because there is really no reason to talk the other until someone beats Highlands which may not happen again this year. Just for the record Christian Co., Hoptown and Owensboro are all in the same district so District 1 of 5A may have some of the best games this year. The other team is Ohio Co. which Owensboro beat twice last year by a combined total of 105-7.

For Owensboro their group of sophmores have some talent Trey Cain returning kicker #3 at kicking.com combine Kal Prince QB very mobile and a very nice arm at around 6' 3" he will be a force for the devils in the coming years. Zack Brown LB can really hit and is a thick kid and with the lose of several defensive players should fit right in. Dakota Blanton ?? TE maybe this kid is 6'7" and if they can use him on offense will be very nice for Prince to throw to. Ryan Boling RB this kid is fast but still small and needs some weight added but he is very explosive and can really hit the holes. Others of note that need some size added are Jake Ward RB Cody Martin WR Tony Davis RB a diamond in the rough. Can be a great pounder on short yardage. The future for Owensboro looks bright with this group of guys added to the returning JR's and SR's. :devil:

Well Owensboro lost most the offensive and defensive lines but in all do respect they have talent and speed. If they can get some weight on some boys and the freshman this year that will be playing next year can make an impact they may have a chance. Maybe not this year but 09 for sure. They have a QB with an arm, Speed in the receivers that can catch the ball and some linebackers coming in that can flat knock your teeth out. This team this year will need to pass more than run with a mobile QB they sure have a chance to put up some points this year but we will have to see where the Defense is. The DBs will be no issue returning all-stater Yante Williams. Kyree Maddox will be a big player at LB and the kicking game will also be solid returning freshman kicker Trey Cain we will see if these 3 guys can build on a successful last season and be leaders. Owensboro always has a ton of speed and even more talent if they can keep the boys concentration on football and not have any distractions. I think the Devils have the potential to be a surprise young team this year. Also remember the name Kal Prince this kid is going to be a big name at QB in the state for the next 3 years and Owensboro will be more of a passing team which will also help with Shemwell and Douglas to get more yards at the RB positions. Owensboro's offense might have a different look next year but we will see what Coach Prince and company will come up with. :devil:

That is awesome Congrats Monte Merrick. I hope I get to see him kick next year sounds like he has a bright future as well. Does anyone have any information on the camp that was in Las Vegas I would like to research it for cost and all of that good stuff. Any other information on all of our state kickers at camps would be awesome.

I think it is a combination of some of the above and also some other factors. Money is sure one for a public school and I just saw where they are going to lose 7% more money. Not making any excuses but for a public school the money has to go towards all sports. Our school has to have fund raisers to to get things for the players and around here most people would rather support the band or the cheerleaders rather a football team. It is still a little backwards I think. Until the day comes where Athletics and Academics can share some importance state wide we will continue to be behind the 8-ball as opposed to other states. And what people do not realize is athletics is all about academics, because if you don't make the grades during the week you don't play on Friday's or weekends. Athletics is also educational as it allows for a kid to set and achieve goals, communication with their peers and also in the public. Acquire leadership skills as well along with time management in finding a way to fit in athletics and still maintain good grades and complete academics. One last thing that hurts is a lot of players that play multiple sports across the state and not just play football or commit to just one sport. When a player gets to college they play one sport 99.9% of the time and they do not have other coaches pulling a kid another direction because he is athletic. Most of our football players as soon as we lost to BG went on to the next sport. There are a few that are strictly one sport high school kids and they will rise to the top and we will all know who they are. Hope this adds a little more input.

They may want to consider putting stats on Maxpreps because when we were in California I saw it advertised on TV out there which means more exposure. Just a suggestion but the more exposure the better.
