5A poll

Featured Replies

Just wondering how John Hardin dropped to #3 with a win and BG jumps to #2 with a loss? I guess the Bluegrass preps voters believe in moral victories.

With that logic, if John Hardin beats Caverna and Bowling Green loses to the Dallas Cowboys by two points, they should remain the same?

Apples and oranges WestKY. I know why people voted BG up to the #2 spot, I just don't agree. Using your/their logic, maybe BG should be #1 and Highlands should be #2 since both Trinity and Colrain are two power house teams and Highlands lost by more than BG did?

Bowling Green and John Hardin are probably inseperable right now. BG lost a tough game to Kentucky's toughest team, and Highlands lost a tough game to one of the toughest teams in the nation. More will become clear over the season, so I wouldn't worry too much about rankings right now.

K&K totally agree with you about the poll. I see your pretty new poster on here, so let me shed some light. BG, Highlands, St. X, T and several others rule on here because they have more posters and voice there opinion. So don't let the poll get to you or the season will be a long one.

As someone who isn't associated with BG, Highlands, St. X, and T, let me say that the BGP Polls aren't your cookie cutter polls. As has been explained on here before, teams that lose don't automatically drop in the polls and teams that win don't automatically jump, as is the knee-jerk reaction for some other polls where votes are cast.

To me, and probably to others that have input in the polls also, Bowling Green's 16-point loss to one of the top two teams in the ENTIRE STATE looks better than a 16-point win over a winless team.

Boyle County can start 0-5 with the schedule they play and be a better 0-5 team than Adair County, who may start 5-0 against a bunch of 1A and 2A schools. Tell me which team is better and why. It won't be because of their record.

There was a lot of debate in the preseason about how the chips should fall after Highlands at the top. There is no debate that Highlands is the top-ranked team in 5A. It was thought that Bowling Green might suffer a bit more with their losses than John Hardin would, which meant JH got a #2 ranking, and BG was third. But as Fort Campbell and Newport Central Catholic have proved in 2A, huge losses don't neccesarily mean losses on the field.

For too long, people have grown accustomed to seeing their team rise after a win, no matter how badly they may have played, or seeing their team drop after a loss, no matter how close they came to winning. You aren't going to get that with the BGP Polls so just brace yourself.

Everybody on here criticizes the Litkenhous Ratings because they base their formula on margin of victory more than strength of schedule.

BGP does the exact opposite and still gets criticized.

As a football fan, which is it? Should we rank on margin of victory reglardless of opponent or should we factor in strength of schedule with the margin?

As someone who has been involved with the rankings process on here for years, let me say that teams just don't move up or down with no reason. People don't submit a list of 10 schools and walk away. You have to defend your reasoning.

A perfect example is Class 5A. I didn't feel like a loss to Male should have warranted Christian County dropping from the top ten. I stated my case. Several others stated their case. In the end after more discussion, Christian County dropped out. I still don't agree with it, but I understand why. And I understand the process we use on here.

I like to think the BGP Polls tend to think outside the box some. No one could understand why we had Lone Oak no higher than fifth last year at the end of the regular season. They were crushing people and hadn't lost a game. If you watched the championship game against Lexington Catholic, you know why now. Their schedule was flat out terrible. Other polls had them ranked second and third. Why? Because they were unbeaten, but anyone who watched them play would tell you they weren't the second best 4A team in the state.

It's funny you make the assertions about favortism, when in reality, there is no one associated with the Highlands or Trinity programs that have input in the BGP rankings.

Past history has shown the BGP rankings to be among the most accurate when predicting how the postseason will go. I see no need to change the process now.

Wrong........HHS lost by 15 and BG lost by 17....:D:D

I thought BG lost at home by 17? Highlands lost at Colerain by 15.

I'm not knocking the BG polls and I don't think they are biased. For the most part I think they are well researched and accurate. Again, I understand why voters ranked BG#2, I just don't agree. I'm not even that concerned, I just thought this thread would make an interesting mid-week discussion topic.

Hopefully John and BG will be matched up in the Semi-state this year and we will see who goes on to Papa Johns.

Scribe is right on the button with his explanation. :thumb:

Scribe first let me explain my last post #5 to K&K G. What I was trying to let K&K G know it is hard sometimes for schools with fewer posters or subscribers to make there point known or get it across to the bluegrasspreps viewers because numbers of other school posters.

Second your above explanation you said "It's funny you make the assertions about favoritism, when in reality, there is no one associated with the Highlands or Trinity programs that have input in the BGP rankings.” Nor did I any where use the word favoritism used by the BGP’s staff to rank teams in there poll. I have the upmost respect for the BGP staff and this site.

Third your explanation is well verse and understandable for all viewers.

Point taken JD.

Another good thing about out polls is that the people voting have seen multiple teams play throughout the year because they all aren't media members that may cover one or two teams.

Your point about spreading the knowledge on BGP is a good one. It's always helpful to learn more about other teams on here. You did hit the nail on the head with that one. :thumb:

The other thing to keep in mind is that things tend to work themselves out over the course of the year. It's only two weeks into the season, and everyone is still trying to get a read on everyone. One advantage Bowling Green has at this point is that their first two games were very aggressive scheduling-wise, and so their performances in those games are given a lot of weight. John Hardin won theirs, but their competition is not quite to the level of the teams BG played and so it becomes a little more difficult to slot them.

Personally, I think by the end of the year John Hardin will be happy where they end up.
