Something else many people may not realize is a lot of Florence is downright poor. Almost 50% of the residences in the city of Florence are apartments. Add to that travel, parking, admission, refreshments, etc. when those same kids can hang at home and play PS3 and use FB for "free" it is easy for me to see why the turnout is so poor.

 

Ru, I'm sure a lot of what you mentioned in your post may be true. However, I grew up a heck of a lot poorer than some today who consider themselves poor and I was always able to scrape up $2-$3 to get to a ballgame. No, I did not have enough $ for refreshments but the games were so packed, you didn't dare leave your spot for fear it wouldn't be there when you got back. A bunch of us would even take a Greenline to some games, pile in a buddy's car or get a parent to drop us off and pick us up (I also must admit that we even thumbed for rides). If it was a rivalry game or playoff, the school might even rent a school bus to take students and parents. I just don't think it's "cool" nowadays to have school spirit and I'm always surprised when I see it at games I attend. I think kids take things for granted, they just don't appreciate the opportunities they have today.

I never remember my High School renting a school bus to take students to a basketball game - unless the team went to the Sweet 16-and then we had to pay our way for the bus ride. Maybe it was due to the weather on Friday; people attend church on Sunday morning. Everyone does not have access to BGP. We were eating breakfast yesterday in Florence and someone in my family asked when the games were being played this weekend. Knew the times had changed due to the weather on Friday but we had to google this.

While what you saying is true about Florence (and that is why I have been saying for a while now, that Florence is going to be the New Covington), there are a lot of students who live in Oakbrook or along Pleasant Valley Road who attend Boone County and they are far from poor!

And there are also people in Florence on hard times - I know a few. Please don't put everyone in the same basket on income or financial status.

Times for the boys games were never affected. I was at the semis Sat. Cooper was very well represented. Lloyd, yes Lloyd and NCC were well represented. Boone was a no show. No excuses...

To be fair to Boone, NC's student section wasn't very big considering 400 kids in the school and NDA didn't have a formal student section that I saw. My guess is this game being on Sunday contributed as well.

I suspect that they feel that it is just not important to them. Boone County is a huge school, making it a much more impersonal place than we smaller schools. There are probably days or weeks go by at Boone where the general population have no contact with the players, and the friend/player ratio is much smaller than at a smaller school. The team does their thing, and the students do theirs. At a smaller school, the team and our competitions are what we do.

 

Our kids turn out for our games because the guys they sit next to at class, eat lunch with, and hang out with, are playing. They know them, and if it important to the team, it is important to them. I was really proud of our turnout for our girls and boys in the "A" State tournament at Frankfort where they had to drive an hour and a half to be there and had to put out big bucks for a ticket, but they felt they needed to be there.

 

Some schools take their athletic teams for granted and feel no relationship with them, while others get totally involved. Some programs are spoiled because they win every year and it's not a big thing to them. If a student is a true fan and friend of the team, then cost and miles are no object to them. It's a matter of pride. Some schools have it, and some don't.

 

Maybe Boone could rent out the CovCath Crazies and take them to Rupp, then everybody, including the KHSAA would be happy.

We live in a society where it is easier to criticize the other team and complain about your team or coach instead of just showing support for the kids and coaches who are giving their all! Think about adults that attend games, most of them spend their time complaining about the coaches, players and refs! Instead of just being supportive and cheering for their team!!

 

Truer words have never been spoken. What you describe is the part of basketball that I can't stand.

Great for Holmes - my school ! - Still don't put everyone in one basket. Gas - ticket prices - It was hard for my spouse and I back in the day and tickets were $1.00! Imagine that. Ask to borrow Mom's car 2 and 3 times a week to travel all over NKY. It was good times!

I'm curious to know if the football team draws a nice crowd to home and away games.

What a society we live in! Two teams from one school made it to the state tournament and all people can do is bash their fan support from students. Who cares, the students who wanted to attend did and the students who couldn't for whatever reason didn't. I'm pretty sure the players didn't let fan support dictate how they were going to play because if they did, neither of the Boone teams wouldn't played their way into the tournament. If it was all about student support the teams who had the best would have won the region. Congrats to both basketball teams from Boone.

There were actually alot of Boone students there but not sitting in one big cohesive group. The Boone County fans are very proud of both of the teams advancing to state! It would be nice for one day that the rest Northern of Ky could just be excited for this school instead of putting something negative about them on the same day both teams advance to the sweet 16. These kids are never given any credit on here. The students at this school are a wonderful group of kids! GO REBELS!! Bring back the win for Northern Ky!

No of course not. I wondered about the support they got at home games where it is much cheaper to attend than at BOK. It had nothing to do with Rupp or Diddle.
