Just seems that in a weird way there is some sort of moral victory being celebrated in this thread. It has been broken down as far as "396 students" and "7-8% were on the court." Sheeeesh.

It is more of a convenience issue than a poverty one if you ask me. Sunday afternoon game about 30 minutes away that is isn't as appealing to your average high schooler than if the Region final were on a Friday night down the road at Conner or Ryle. Not justifying it, I just think that is what is at play here a little bit.

 

Side note: How sad is it that this thread has more posts than the game thread? Talk about taking away from the team...

Most kids blow $6.00 or more on stupid stuff every weekend. Students from CovCath, NewCath, Highlands, HC, and the rest of the gang would have to drive a hell of a lot farther to Conner or Ryle but would not have a problem showing up.

With all due respect, I googled my address (Boone district) to BOK Center and it said 17 miles, 26 minutes. For the record, I do not drive a car made before 1930.

Let's set the record straight. The poor support has nothing to do with cost or inconvenience of the BOK. As Q pointed out above, go to any boys Boone County home game and you will see that there is no student section. And to someone's question above about Boone County football games - there are big crowds and plenty of students at the football games. I have no idea why there is no student support for the boys basketball team.

So do you think Tickets, Parking, concession prices and gas would be any cheaper at Rupp or Dibble?

And there are also people in Florence on hard times - I know a few. Please don't put everyone in the same basket on income or financial status.

 

Oh, for Chrissakes. Everywhere in Kentucky has problems. Boone County, Ky, has weathered it better than anywhere in the state, so please don't go there. That's like folks in Oldham County whining about "hard times."

No moral victory here OR, just shocked Boone can't support 2 great teams. I've seen a Boone team play 5 times this year. I'm obviously the minority here. I was in the Boone section Saturday for the record.

I think it is a problem across the state. Why pay to watch high school basketball when you can watch college games at home. Most schools struggle to create an environment of school spirit. We live in a society where it is easier to criticize the other team and complain about your team or coach instead of just showing support for the kids and coaches who are giving their all! their team!!

Think about adults that attend games, most of them spend their time complaining about the coaches, players and refs! Instead of just being supportive and cheering for

The bolded is especially true. I could ramble about things I've seen and heard from adults, but I'll just say nice post. Wish more people felt the way you do.

Something else many people may not realize is a lot of Florence is downright poor. Almost 50% of the residences in the city of Florence are apartments. Add to that travel, parking, admission, refreshments, etc. when those same kids can hang at home and play PS3 and use FB for "free" it is easy for me to see why the turnout is so poor.

The demographics at Boone County High School have changed drastically from 15 to 20 years ago. Most of the apartments in Florence have been there for a long, long time. But for varying reasons, including the opening of Ryle, Boone County has become one of the most inner-city high schools in the area.

 

Don't compare Boone's student section to that of NewCath, Dixie or Cooper. How'd they stack up with Holmes or Newport from a few years ago?

Yeah, well, I'm from NoKy. I have a hard time taking it seriously when folks cry and moan about how bad it is in Boone Co.

I'm not from Boone County. However, Just trying to figure off the top of my head. I'm at around $200.00 in admission prices, 40 x $5 for basketball this year, boys and girls. Plus hitting somewhere around $350.00 + in gas for the year. This is just for Basketball. That doesn't include any snacks or drinks at a game. Granted, these are adult admission prices, not student prices. I do make a little more $ than some of the students, probably not all of them. So money is an issue for some I would think. With all this being said, I too have noticed a decline in student spirit over the years.
