I know it seems like lack of attendance overall by students appears to be down but to have virtually no section of kids at a Regional Final? That almost sounds like a movement. Just curious how the players may be percieved at the school or how They get along with the rest of the student body.

Actually, Q has a good comment there. My understanding is the girls team gets much more support than the boys team at Boone County. Maybe that is part of the answer - the kids are spending their time and money going to girls games over boys games.

There were some students at the boys final - about the number you see in that student section for the girls game in the picture above. My guess is they were probably there for the girls game and came early to see the boys. Ok, anyone who has followed Boone County High School basketball over the years realizes that there has always been a bigger fan following for the girls team versus the boys team. The girl's teams have a long history of producing excellent teams and talent. Even before Nell came in 1985/1986, you had Ben Coffman who also coached very good teams. The girls team has made it to the state tourney 11 times previously and the latest being in 2010 (before this year). They have won all 11 first round games played at the state tourney and made it to the semi-finals multiple times. The boy's team, on the other hand, has only made 3 state tourney appearances in over 50 years and have never made it out of the first round play. So I would guess it has a lot to do with the history and success of the teams. Girl's basketball has always drawn more fan support at Boone County as far back as I can remember and rightfully so based on their success over the years. It may not be the right thing to do, but unfortunately that is the way it goes for any sport. The better the team's history, the more fans you draw.

 

As far as this year's fan support at the Regionals, does anyone think it had anything to do with the horrible tornados that hit our area on Friday night? I know a lot of people's family and friends were directly affected by these tornados and some may have been volunteering to help out these people on Saturday and Sunday versus attending a high school game. I think we all need to stope and realize there are sometimes more important things to do with our free time than attend a high school game or argue on a website as to why student's weren't in attendance at these games.

I saw them play in the quarters and semis, I did not make the finals. I saw quite a few adults, not more than a dozen kids even if they were scattered about.

I would be willing to bet a sizable student section today for Boone with the incentive to miss school.

I have been watching this thread for several days and think that it is interesting. I was sitting on the side behind a group of about 15-20 Boon Co boy fans for their first round game against Holmes. They were back and forth to the consessions the entire first half and when they were in their seats they were messing with their phones. Not one of them cheered at the game even once. I commented to my brother that it was like they were in a movie treather. I finally said "why arn't you kids down under the basket cheering and acking crazy like the other teams student section?" They just looked at me and acted disinterested. One kid said "it's the first game, we expect to win". Pretty casual attitude I thought.

This is exactly what I have heard from a couple Boone parents with regard to the support of the boys team.

Boone Co student support here in Diddle not too bad considering distance.

 

Of course tickets are only $5.00 and parking free.

 

They have much more than Dunbar which has over 700 more students according to program.

Not trying to turn this into a "back when I played" thing, but in '04 went Boone went 26-4 and lost in the Regional Final to Cov Cath at Holmes, we had an awesome student section for every home game, many closer (proximity) road games, and a very solid turnout for the regional games, from what I remember. It might have been the one fluke year, but we always outdrew the women's team and by a lot. Were they acting crazy and all dressed up? No, but they still turned out in very large numbers. That was also in a year when the women's team was solid and won the region. I think we just had a much closer class to be honest. We even had pretty good turnouts for Men's Soccer games.

 

I think they type of student has dramatically changed at Boone over the last 8 years. At least that is my experience. Maybe we can blame it all on social media.

You guys all have to face it. Most kids could care less about sports if they don't participate in them. They would rather be playing video games, skateboarding, etc. etc. etc. Technology has given kids another avenue to spend their time. Like it or not, they are a product of today's environment.

Upon more reflection I think you are correct. It was a complete cluster you know what picking kids up from the pep buses. The buses sit in the fire lane with all their flashers (stop sign out) on and everyone (but me) passed them illegally in the lot.
