The announcer said Vocke wanted a pass interference call and got the first one. There was another one immediately after that. Then there was a 3rd before the snap on first down. Understand the one on Vocke. I hope the other 2 were on the coaches and not the kids.

Wow! What a game! We got it done and held Bw to no first downs I'm the second half until the final drive. Bw easily the best team we have played this what a great tiger team. Bw was the real deal

Great crowd, great game...wow, the Beechwood Tigers really impressed me (except for the penalties at the end). This is a huge win for the Cardinals!!! This is a quality win over an excellent football team, in my opinion. Jonathan Jackson was an unstoppable force....without him, we don't win this game. Hope all the Beechwood fans make it home safely.

As a Longtime BW fan, those penalties at the end were embarrassing. Coaches should be a calming influence, not try to incite a riot. I was told two penalties on players and two on coaches. I saw the official signal ejection on a coach. I have to say I was not proud to be a tiger fan at the end of that game. An ugly finish to a great game

Great effort by both teams. #44 for Beechwood is a warrior. Very exciting game, it went right down to the wire. Jackson had 181 rushing yds and no telling the tackles, I'm told.

Just back from the game. WOW. It was a classic. Wasn't the prettiest game by either team, but, boy, there were some licks handed out by both teams thruout. The Tigers absolutely came to play tonight and layed it on the line and were determined not to go quietly. They should hold there heads up proud because they battled from start to finish. It's a shame either team had to lose this one and I guarantee both these teams players are gonna be feeling it tomorrow.

 

I think Rash did a terrific job keeping the Cards off balance in the 1st half, both offensively and defensively. I thought Mayfields defense was terrific in the 2nd half, something they've done all year long. Neither teams special teams could do much with the other, no long returns on kickoffs or punts and both punters did a great job turning the field position back to there team. Neither could control the field position for too long.

 

I know Vocke gets alot of press as a RB, but, it was Nussbaum who's an absolute horse to bring down. I can't count how many missed tackles he caused. He took over for Beechwood seemingly everytime they needed a big play. Vocke made a couple of picks that were terrific. The 1st was a jump ball and the 2nd I felt for sure was over his head, but somehow he came down with an over the shoulder pick. He's a heck of a DB.

 

Jonathan Jackson absolutely took over the game for the Cardinals, making big run after big run and big tackle after big tackle. He was punishing defenders when they went to the Wildcat package. What an outstanding player he is. It seemed to be more Nussbaum vs Jackson than Beechwood vs Mayfield in the 2nd half. Thats not to take away anything from the rest of the team on either side, just that it seemed Rash and Morris both decided we gotta go with our horse and thats what they did.

 

I believe these 2 teams are head and shoulders the class of 1a football and look forward to more Instant Classic games. Definately worth the money to see these teams play.

I agree about the coaches but the first player just let his emotions get the best of him. You could tell that he usually doesn't do things to get penalties. Beechwood is a class program and this one little problem won't change that.

 

#44 was a beast and he put Beechwood on his shoulders. He made plays when the line let him down. On his last big run I thought he was going to take it to the house.

Just in from old War Memorial where I witnessed a classic. A few random thoughts as I did from my phone at the stadium earlier. Bw's offense gets all the headlines but their defense was the best times 10 I have seen all year. Nassalbaum (No idea how you spell it) was a tank, what can't that kid do. The Bw defense really shutdown our passing Guhy was 11 for 21 -95 yards and 3 picks. Guhy had not seen that kind of coverage all year. The story of the game though was the Mayfield defense and Jonathan Jackson, he narrowly stole the show from Bw and Nassalbaum. I have no idea how many tackles he had but on offense he was great going for 184 yards. Late in the game when he took direct snaps in the wildcat he was amazing! The Cards defense was also as advertised. Bw managed only 4 first downs all game with 2 in the final series when Nassalbaum scramble. Cards 280 yards to Bws 191 for the night. Cards overcome 3 picks! Vocke 6 carries 2 yards unpfficial

I wonder how many yds the Tigers had after halftime. It couldn't have been many. With exception of a couple of Nussbaum runs on that last drive, it seemed they were 3 and out every other series and most of the time had 4th and long and no chance to even go for it on 4th down. I was a little surprised they didn't look more to there big receiver when they were forced to pass. Higginson was on an island by himself several times and you'd think they would have tried something long to him and get him in a jump ball situation, 6'4 or 6'5 vs 5'9, but, I was glad they didn't. He had already burned Mayfield once in the 1st half with that type play on there go ahead score. He was a nice looking receiver, too.

Great game, with two great defenses.

 

Beechwood did a fantastic job covering the curl and hitch routes and the inside screens that gave them so much trouble last year. Every time a Mayfield receiver caught a ball on a short route, he had one or two guys around him in a hurry.

 

Nussbaum went over the 100-yard mark on the final drive. Jackson had a little over 180 and three touchdowns.

 

It's a shame the rest of the state couldn't see the game, but for that we can thank six classes and some weird geography.

 

Hope all the Beechwood fans made it home safely. I got to talk to a few of them and they were very gracious visitors. I overlook the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties because those things happen in the heat of the moment and none of them involved a cheap shot on an opposing player. Beechwood is a class program. I just we could've watched this game next week in Bowling Green.

Defense returns Mayfield to Class A final

Nov 26, 2011 | 5 views | 0 | 1 | | MAYFIELD — Dondre Jackson might not have taken out his mother to knock down Beechwood’s last-gasp pass, but he didn’t mind knocking a teammate out of the way.

 

Beechwood, on fourth down at the Cardinals’ 19-yard line on a potential game-winning drive in the final minute, threw over the middle to running back Cameron Vocke. Jackson, a linebacker, came from behind Vocke to bat down the pass at the 4 with 26 seconds remaining to preserve Mayfield’s 19-14 victory in Friday night’s Class A state semifinal.

 

“I ran over somebody, either (Jordan) Brown or (William) Higginson,” Jackson said. “I was going to get that ball no matter what, to either catch it or knock it down.”

 

The Cardinals, 14-0 and ranked first in the Associated Press poll, will take on No. 5 Hazard — which beat Pikeville 57-35 — in the state championship game on Friday at 11 a.m. at Western Kentucky University’s Smith Stadium. It’s the Cardinals’ third consecutive trip to the state finals and a rematch of last year’s title game, when the Cardinals blew out Hazard 47-6.

 

It was the last great play of the evening for the Cardinals’ defense, which managed to stop a final drive that was run totally out of the Wildcat formation with Max Nussbaum in for quarterback Taylor Davis, who left the game in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. Nussbaum, who had 104 yards on 29 carries, gained nearly half of them on the final drive, twice scrambling for 20-plus yards on third-down plays to put a scare into the Mayfield faithful in a packed house at War Memorial Stadium.

 

Until the final drive, which began at Beechwood’s 30-yard line with 2:45 remaining, the second-ranked Tigers (12-2) had no first downs and only 13 yards in total offense in five second-half possessions. Nussbaum scrambled for two first downs and also completed a couple of passes, just good enough to keep the defense from focusing solely on his running ability.

 

“They spread out the defense, and he can run and make a guy or two miss,” Mayfield coach Joe Morris said of Nussbaum, “and he’s tough to bring down.”

 

Still, Mayfield’s defense had enough juice to ensure the win on a night that its high-powered offense sputtered on occasion. Quarterback Jake Guhy was picked off three times, and after Mayfield got the lead, it went with Jonathan Jackson (29 carries, 184 yards) as a Wildcat quarterback, unveiling that look for the first time this season.

 

Jackson scored all three Mayfield touchdowns, the first on a 53-yard run midway through the first quarter, but most every yard after that was of the hard-earned variety. On the go-ahead drive, which was set up by an interception by outside linebacker Macaiah Jackson at the Beechwood 40, Jackson powered his way to the 4 for a first-and-goal on four straight runs.

 

But Mayfield’s momentum was lost a bit when, on the next play, offensive tackle Seth Clifton went down with what was believed to be a broken left ankle. The game was stopped for several minutes while Clifton was taken out by an ambulance, and Jackson cut inside and through a pair of potential tacklers on a 3-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter.

 

“We kept the ball on the ground after that and put the game in the defense’s hands,” Morris said. “And they responded.”

 

Jonathan Jackson, one of three Jackson’s that made heroic plays on the night, managed to save a big gain when he tackled Nussbaum when it looked like the rest of the defense fell for a fake handoff to Vocke.

 

“Defense has carried this team all year,” Jackson said. “They did some things to move the ball a little in the first half, but our coaches made some adjustments and we held them. (Nussbaum) made some really nice runs on that last drive, but we held them out.”

 

Beechwood’s players and coaching staff were screaming for a pass interference call on the final pass, and the Tigers picked up three personal foul penalties before Mayfield snapped the ball on the last play of the game.

 

“Of course it was pass interference,” Beechwood coach Noel Rash said, “but you can’t hang everything on that one play. Their defense is really good, and we missed some tackles on (Mayfield’s last touchdown) drive.”

TP, I think the difference in Guhy from past weeks wasn't so much the coverage, but, the fact that BWoods DL could rush 3 or 4 and still manage to get pressure on him, where he's been used to sitting in that pocket a little longer and allowing the speed receivers to get behind the DBs. Because the DL could rush so few and still get pressure, that allowed them to drop an extra man or 2 back in coverage. Of course, the DBs did a good job, too, especially Vocke. I also think the Cardinals tried to go a little too deep a little too often

when they probably could have been more effective with the quick outs, bubble screens, some shorter wheel routes, etc.. BWood pursued those well when they did attempt them, but, they were still getting 5-10 yds on most of them, but, for some reason, they didnt go to them near as much as they normally do.

One post I must make before bedtime. The penalties at the end? Yes Beechwood fans, it wasn't our proudest moment and I understand not liking it. I doubt there is one person who likes it. I appreciate the understanding by the Mayfield fans in this thread. But the fact is football is a game of emotion and those young men just saw that call (or non call) end their lifelong dream. A dream they had worked for so hard over the past 4 years. The penalties gfollowing the non call resulted from emotions out of control and had no impact on the game's outcome. The player that the first call was on is one of the most humble, respectful and fine young men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing at Beechwood. He deserves much better than to have that end game incident blown up here or anywhere else.

 

I will tell everyone that in this game I saw more sportsmanship by both sides than I can ever recall at a football game. Players on both sides lending a hand and helping the other team's players up at the end of plays and even a pat on the helmet. Coach Rash walking to the other side of the field to give Mayfield's injured player encouragement and recognition as he was being carted from the field. The fans on both sides were great. The mutual respect displayed at the end of the game on the field in comments by coaches, players and fans was genuine and much appreciated. Please don't let what happened at the end of the game detract from or be anywhere close to a reflection of what happened at War Memorial Stadium tonight. Let's focus our comments on the classic high school football game the players and coaches gave us tonight.
