The article I read also is claiming that Sandusky was "forced" to retire in 1999 in exchange for a cover up.....If true, still think Joe Pa is being unfairly villified?

He wasn't an employee of Paterno at that time....Sandusky's last year as a football coach was 1999

If that is true I will not defend Joe Pa any more. Most of my defense of him is based on him only hearing one allegation. If true he knew all about the 98 investigation and helped force a retirement to keep it covered up, he's lost all respect from me.

Not asking for one, simply pointing out the circumstances which could cause him to discuss the matter with his father first. I think it was reasonable, even at 28.

There's no way, if true, anyone can truly believe Joe Pa didn't know and have a hand in the cover up. :thumb:

You can think less of me for my job all you want, fact is I help people every day that are innocent. I help a lot more that are guilty, but in my line of work all I do is ensure that the system treats them fairly and their constitutional rights aren't violated along the way to their punishment for their crimes. But, at the end of the day I do know cops hold a lot of the power with DA's in almost every plea entered, the cop had to agree to the terms of it.

I do not think less of you. But this is not a trial and at some point we cannot approach every situation as if we are in a courtroom or under an investigation trying to prove innocence or guilt.

 

Grown man (Sandusky), 10 year old kid, shower, at my (Paterno's) facility. He was told that in some capacity. We do not know to what extent. Fine. That alone should call for more than what occurred. It is as simple as that. Again, do not try to over-think the situation.

That's great if you really think you would given the postion the guy held of being close to an icon who holds your career goals in his hands. I'd like to think I would too but I can't say I know for sure at that age. Now? Yes.

Question for HT, or others in the legal profession....If these new allegations are true, wouldn't Joe Pa also be facing some sort of charges?

WOW! I hope this is just a rumor. This is beyond belief. I am sure crap like this really exists in this world, but how does anyone get tied up in to something like that? Never mind, I do not want to know. Sick.

It's true in most every court in eastern Kentucky I've been in. The cops are always approached here before a plea deal is reached. It was the same when I practiced in north Mississippi. The prosecutors will go on their own if necessary but they will always try and seek the cops approval first.

 

We'll agree to disagree then because I know police in eastern ky who would say otherwise.

 

And I don't think less of you because of your job. Defense attorneys have to exist. I may need one some day. But it explains to me why you are wanting to place the blame here on the police and prosecutor more than others.

 

Like I said, I agree that it would be nice to ask the prosecutor why he didn't want to do anything the first time but he's gone so we can't.

Here are facts not disputed by anyone including JoePa. He was told in March of 02 that Sandusky was naked in the shower with a 10 year old boy who was also naked. He was also told that some kind of sexual touching/horse playing was going on in the shower. PSU because of this info told him not to have kids on the premesis anymore, but he was allowed to remain there. If that isn't sick enough what is? Everyone involved in this at the very bare minimum knew he took at least one shower with a 10 year old boy. Yet he was still around the program and still using the facilities. Sorry, if a friend of mine was in a shower with a 10 year old boy at the very least we wouldn't be friends anymore.

 

Now as far as the 98 situation. Are we really going to believe that Joe Pa, the most powerful man in that entire community and University had no idea about that investigation? Why did Sandusky retire in his prime but keep an office all the way until 2011? After that 98 situation the 02 situation comes up and nobody connected any dots? Really? That is weak. After the 02 situation they continued to allow this guy to run a charity foundation that put him in contact with hundreds or thousands of children. Come on. This is sick. All Joe Pa supporters and backers will deeply regret it by this time next year.

I'm not saying necessarily he shouldn't have done more, I guess I think more about what should the punishment be. If he knew way more than the one reported incident he's probably not been punished enough, but if that's all he knew then I'm not sure he's not being over punished and it's turned in to over kill.

Definitely, he could die in prison and not on the football field. But, it all comes down to what he knew and what he helped do. If he helped stopped the prosecution it could be big trouble. He could also be sued for millions by all the victims. At this point there just isn't enough information on the new allegations to really know what he could face. But, witness tampering and all sorts of other charges are possible.
