I think I am gonna wait on the facts to come out completely, I believe Joe to be a man of god, integrity and respect, he has done nothing to prove otherwise. I think sooner or later it will show that what he was told was either vague or shady, and he done what was right...I think he will regret not doing more as he said in hindsight. But hindsight is always 20/20, If it comes out that I am wrong and evidence supports It I will be the first to say so.

 

I think he was but at some point comfortablity became more important to Paterno than the above. It's a human reaction to not want to face these kinds of things. I don't believe it excuses him in the least but I respect your stance and as I said in the other post, I believe a lot of this is going to get a LOT worse before it can start to get better.

I say we sit back and see how this plays out. I have a feeling that once everything is out, the Paterno defenders will be waffling on their stance.

I don't, but there is no denying that he knew of the accusation, knew the grand jury was investigating him for it and let him around the team and the facilities. He was also a good enough of a friend of his to at least question him working with other kids. I'm not talking legality here. I'm talking his conduct as a human is gross.

If this were just the accusers I'd be more guarded. A grad assistant at the time told Joe Pa something illegal happened. We can't be sure to what extent he was told of the activity but there is no denying he was told of it. This grad assistant is credible enough that he has been promoted several times. There has to be a point where this guy shouldn't have ever had access to PSU's facilities ever again.

So Penn State is in the wrong for firing him over the phone, but Paterno is free from guilt for not reporting the incident to the proper authorities?

With the new allegations coming out, if true, Paterno will rot in prison. Rumors are a massive cover-up was put in place back in 1999, three years before the shower incident.

No. Not if a report was made to the police and the police concluded that there was not sufficient evidence to prosecute. Sandusky was not on staff, not associated with football. He was listed as p.e. teacher "emeritus." He supposedly only came around on behalf of the charity at infrequent times.

If the new allegations are true, and he knew about it (and who are we kidding, if a cover up occurred, Joe Pa definitely knew), I would be shocked if he doesn't. You can't obstruct an investigation and not be punished for it. When a person commits murder, and a friend helps them cover it up, they go to jail to. This is a different situation, but the same principal IMO.

I didn't say anything about Paterno being free of guilt...that will come out in due time. However, in a situation like that is this severe or even in a situation when it is not near this severe. The proper thing to do is hold a meeting face to face instead of sending a messenger telling him to call a phone number.

 

I understand the severity of this situation, but I do think that Penn State should have allowed him to finish out the season...until further evidence comes forward about Paterno's knowledge and direct involvement in this situation. The Board of Trustees should have been interviewing Paterno, McQueary, etc. from the minute this news broke until now, getting statements, evidence, etc.
