Here are facts not disputed by anyone including JoePa. He was told in March of 02 that Sandusky was naked in the shower with a 10 year old boy who was also naked. He was also told that some kind of sexual touching/horse playing was going on in the shower. PSU because of this info told him not to have kids on the premesis anymore, but he was allowed to remain there. If that isn't sick enough what is? Everyone involved in this at the very bare minimum knew he took at least one shower with a 10 year old boy. Yet he was still around the program and still using the facilities. Sorry, if a friend of mine was in a shower with a 10 year old boy at the very least we wouldn't be friends anymore.

 

Now as far as the 98 situation. Are we really going to believe that Joe Pa, the most powerful man in that entire community and University had no idea about that investigation? Why did Sandusky retire in his prime but keep an office all the way until 2011? After that 98 situation the 02 situation comes up and nobody connected any dots? Really? That is weak. After the 02 situation they continued to allow this guy to run a charity foundation that put him in contact with hundreds or thousands of children. Come on. This is sick. All Joe Pa supporters and backers will deeply regret it by this time next year.

 

I may have a different opinion, but I won't regret it. Innocent until proven guilty. As I stated early if all this comes out and is true I won't defend him.

Here is my question concerning Paterno. One has to believe that he and Sandusky were close friends, not just fellow coaches for decades. When Joe is given this information in 2002, why doesn't he approach Sandusky? Why doesn't he continue to follow up with his friend on getting him help (not just justice)?

 

I have one of my best pastoral friends who three years ago confessed to a 7 year affair. He has since tried to rebuild his marriage, family and his life. The one thing I have done over these years is to continue to be a set of ears to hear how his relationships are going and to be a sounding board on stopping the things that caused his life to spiral out of control. That's what friends do.

 

I can't believe that Paterno just let Sandusky go on without any accountability, or mental help.

 

Truth is, I think he didn't want to be bothered with it IMO and looked the other way so it would not interfere with his coaching or program.

I'm not saying necessarily he shouldn't have done more, I guess I think more about what should the punishment be. If he knew way more than the one reported incident he's probably not been punished enough, but if that's all he knew then I'm not sure he's not being over punished and it's turned in to over kill.

His punishment has been public shame, missing out on the last few games of this season, and not leaving on his own terms. To my knowledge he is not facing any criminal charges unless some other sick stuff comes out. I see his punishment being fit. Who he was is what made it so damaging, but that comes with the territory of being Joe Paterno.

 

And for the record, I hope we can all come back and say that we have overreacted and that Paterno was oblivious. Most fear it is not heading that direction.

This was all about protecting the PSU institution. Nothing more, nothing less.

All that's happened so far is he's been removed from his job. Isn't having an ex coach take a shower with a 10 year old boy, yet you let him keep an office for 8 years until a grand jury forces you to testify as to what you know of this situation enough to be removed from your job? Oh after he testified he told Second Mile and others he was being investigated for more than just that incident and he still kept his office and still was around the program. That isn't a fire-able offense?

If Joe knew more, you hit the nail on the head why. If everyone will remember back to 2002-2004 that was the height of people calling for him to retire. He hit a surge in 2005/2006 that lead to his current winning again. But in the early 2000's it looked like the game had passed Joe Pa by and he was already facing a lot of pressure to retire. If this was public then it probably would've been the nail in his coffin.

His car was found abandoned in a Lewisburg, Pa., parking lot and his laptop's harddrive was recovered from the nearby Susquehannna River, but there was no other trace of Gricar. No clues could be gleaned from the severely damaged harddrive and despite a six year investigation that involved the FBI and international help, police have as little an idea today about what happened to the former DA as they did then.

Actually, no. I hadn't voiced an opinion on his firing. I'm speaking to the issue that I believe that Paterno did what he thought he should do and that he was not willfully indifferent, nor trying to cover anything up.

 

He said that with the benefit of hindsight he wished he'd have done more. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, we're taking random timelines in history to construct a body of evidence that leads people to think he deliberately covered up.

It was 7 years after the fact. There is just as much chance it had nothing to do with Sandusky as that it did. It's very interesting though. His brother killed himself also, so there's some mental health issues in the family.

I do not think less of you. But this is not a trial and at some point we cannot approach every situation as if we are in a courtroom or under an investigation trying to prove innocence or guilt.

 

Grown man (Sandusky), 10 year old kid, shower, at my (Paterno's) facility. He was told that in some capacity. We do not know to what extent. Fine. That alone should call for more than what occurred. It is as simple as that. Again, do not try to over-think the situation.

To believe that by far the most powerful man on that campus and in that city had no idea about the 98 investigation is a leap. To think that 98 investifgation isn't the reason he quit his job is a bigger leap. It hasn't been proven yet, but this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better IMO.
