Define - Running Up the Score

Featured Replies

I see it all the time, so and so coach runs up the score whenever he can. Specifically, Dale Mueller has been accused of running up the score many times over the years. There are scores that can give that impression. The last 3 weeks Highlands has scored 188 points and given up 21. If you were there, you know it was not a case of running up the score as the 2nd and 3rd team was in early in the 3rd Qtr in each of those games.

What is running up the score? Leaving the 1st team in the whole game when the outcome was known by the end of the 1st quarter?

If a team still has their guns blazing when the game is completely out of hand. Other than that, it's hard to say. You can't tell kids to stop playing hard...

Like porno: hard to put into words but I know it when I see it.

How often do you have to watch to know it? :sssh:

Sorry but I would like next weeks scoring stats to read 250 to 21. And I won't be the only one that thinks it's not running up the score. I bet CCH won't think it is either.

Second part.....

Yes, that would be running up the score!

Is it ok for the 2nd/3rd string to be throwing to the end zone when they have a 40 point lead in the 4th quarter? (no, i'm not implying that someone did that, just a question to define running up the score).

If the winning team is a spread offense team and that is how they play offense, I don't have a problem with them throwing the ball. But they should work in more runs that they normally would. And the later the game goes, the more you run it.

If you've got your backups in the only thing I would have a problem with is either a trick play or calling timeout late in the game to get more plays off.

We usually like to get the running clock (though we sub in alot startingat 35) then empty the benches or if we are up by 35 by the 4th we usually empty the bench. I dont know if many feel this is running it up but we are atleast consistent in doing it that way plus the running clock gets both sides out of there quickly

Are you asking what is running up the score to me or what is running up the score on BGP?

From YOU I'd like to hear both.

I feel that if the 2nd/3rd string is in and you can't stop them...that's not running up the score. Those kids deserve to get to play "real" football too.

up 50 or more and not running up the gut with 2nd or 3rd string

Pulled your starters when you hit a running clock, but you can't tell the subs not to score.

I don't believe in the "running up the score".....if I bet you by over 50, you should have prepared better and it's my job to win games. If you bet me by 50+ then I should have prepared better, etc.

Just be smart and make sure the starters aren't in winning you are up large, therefore there aren't any unnecessary injuries.
