This is pretty cool. I like the idea of putting up a poll and guess the year. I have some from the 60's although they don't seem to be as thorough as this one, and some from the late 80's. In fact, I have every weekly poll from 89.

1984?

When they first instituted the playoffs, all Jefferson County teams were in AAA and comprised the entire class. In 1975 they added AAAA, with all Jefferson County schools moving to that class as well as other large schools. 8 playoff teams from Jefferson County were one side of the bracket, and 8 teams from the rest of the state in the class were the other side. This went through 1986, so the poll above was from the last year they did it.

 

As to why, I can't really speak to that.

What year did Cumberland close? Two thinks I noticed in "A". Pikeville not in the top 5, and Heath at the #1 spot. How many times was Heath ranked that high? I know they played at Beechwood in 91 in the semi-final and lost. Just wondering which other years Heath was ranked #1 and Pikeville where they are at? But I know the poll above wasn't from 91, as the poll also has Lloyd in AAA and NCC in AA. But 86 would also be my guess.

No Pikeville in the 1A Top 5. This was the year before they went on their unbelievable run the next three years.

 

Funny to see Heath and Boyd County at the top in relation to where their program sits now. Makes you wonder what the back story was that brought them to that position (great coach, great player, consolidation, etc). On that same notion, it is fun to see which programs have sustained success and have remained Top 5 fixtures to this day.

Brings back a lot of memories.

 

In the last year for the AAAA split, Boone County sailed under the radar and won the last "at-large" AAAA state title at home over Warren Central. They lost to St. X in the overall state final the following week. Looks like X must have pulled an upset or two along the way as well, as they were ranked fifth in Jefferson County.

 

CovCath finished second in the old NKY AAA subdistrict to "Erlanger Lloyd",(as listed in the AAA poll) losing a close road game to Lloyd. Lloyd lost to the other subdistrict winner, Highlands in the overall district title game the following week. Not really sure what Highlands did after that.

Was it 1977? I know Harrodsburg made the playoffs that year then not again until 1988. Also Bardstown had a solid run in '77. And then Greenup County being listed that high in AAAA has to make it '77 because that was the only playoff year they had until 1990.
