I can confirm it, just looked it up in the Park City Daily News archives on Google News. It's from November 4th, 1986. I figured it had to be from that year anyway, as Warren Central only had one 9-1 record during the days of the Jefferson County/State AAAA split. They started 6-0 that year, best start in school history. Boone County, down there in the receiving votes, blasted the Dragons by 20 in the State AAAA championship, overall semifinals. In fact, Boone rolled up the #1, #2, and #3 teams in that poll by an average of 20 points a game.

Heath rolled to the state title and beat Cumberland (and Maggard) in the Class A final. Mayfield beat Newport Catholic in the 2A final ... NewCath went for two and threw to Mr. Football Frank Jacobs, but a Mayfield player tipped it away.

I heard stories from the Cumberland People that Maggard got hurt and should not have played in the finals but toughed it out. They say if he had not got hurt they would have won. Just some high school lour from the mountains.
