Pretty amazing to see Lloyd in AAA in a four class system and now they are AA in a six class system.

Was it 1977? I know Harrodsburg made the playoffs that year then not again until 1988. Also Bardstown had a solid run in '77. And then Greenup County being listed that high in AAAA has to make it '77 because that was the only playoff year they had until 1990.

Heath rolled to the state title and beat Cumberland (and Maggard) in the Class A final. Mayfield beat Newport Catholic in the 2A final ... NewCath went for two and threw to Mr. Football Frank Jacobs, but a Mayfield player tipped it away.Tilghman lost to Owensboro 10-7 in the playoffs. Best I recall, that was the closest game Owensboro had in the postseason.

 

Yes, 3A was loaded then ... Danville beat Hopkinsville for the state title in 1985, then dropped down to 2A and started their big run in 1987.

 

 

 

The player who tipped it away for Mayfield was Larry Jackson, the all stater who went on to have a steller career at UK

Indeed it is amazing. Long time ago, although it seems to fly by. Lloyd's schedule during that time span always included Boone County, Conner, Simon Kenton, Highlands, CovCath, NewCath, Campbell County, Dixie, Scott, and Newport. Well, I guess it didn't incude those teams, I guess those teams were the schedule.

 

Only NewCath and Newport are on this year's schedule.

I was about to guess that possibility but I thought the Ads had only one loss going into the last week of the season. I knew Danville was #1 in the last week of the regular season when Boyle upset them.

 

Ironies I saw:

 

In AAA - Danville would lose on a blocked punt to Shelby County (for 2nd year in a row) in the Regionals and HHS (whom Danville defeated at the first of the year) would win the state title.

 

In AA - Somerset would not make the playoffs because of the old Dickinson Point System. Boyle would take the District with the win over Danville (points) and lose to Corbin. Bardstown would lose to Mayfield who was on a 3 year run to the State Finals

 

In A - Unranked Frankfort would upset #1 Harrodsburg for the 2nd straight year in the Regionals and go on to lose to Bellvue in the state finals.

Danville won the AAA crown in '84 (13-0). They lost in the Regionals to Newport in '85. Then dropped the heartbreaker in '86 at Belfry. (To this day I would have loved to have seen what Jimmy Baughman and Keith Morgan would have done on that turf in Louisville vs. Owensboro. It would have been a fun show.)

NC was AAA as well for a long time.

NewCath lost to Mayfield, I believe in OT in the AA finals.

In '77 they returned Gus and Nicky (both of whom would start later for EKU's '82 National Champions) and swept through the regular season undefeated.

What I am getting at is the top two teams in A, Heath and Beechwood are at top at 9-1, so it would appear Beechwood beat Bellevue the year of this poll, so it couldn't be 77, 79, 80 or 81.
