I saw this quote about the Cubs and playing time for prospect Tyler Colvin and immediately thought about the Fred Lewis comments on here yesterday.

 

Cubs manager Mike Quade said Tyler Colvin will have to earn playing time rather than have it be given to him because the team is well out of the playoff race. "I won’t throw my veterans, who have been battling all year, [on the bench],’’ Quade said. "Especially Reed [Johnson] — what a year he’s had — and say, ‘You’re going to sit down for a week.’ No... And these kids will get their at-bats and opportunities, but to me it’s not just, ‘Here it is, go get it and the rest of these guys can watch you play.’’’ GM Jim Hendry said the reason Kosuke Fukudome was dealt was to get a two-month evaluation period on Colvin, but evidently he and Quade don't see eye to eye in that regard.

 

I guess Dusty isn't the only one.

The Cubs' fan base got all excited about Colvin last year, although his minor league record shows that he likely played over his head.

 

In 2011, Colvin has done little to earn a "two-month evaluation period." He's hitting .121 in the majors and he was hitting .250 with a .270 OBP at Iowa. If Quade's job is to try and win games, he has no business playing Colvin every day.

 

Frankly, there is nothing wrong with playing the kids and still playing the vets occasionally. Using Sappelt and Lewis to cover left field is fine. If Sappelt hits, he will get playing time.

Maybe so. Although IMO, a GM should have little say in who plays and when. Just get the players to the manager. If he's not doing his job, then you have the option of getting rid of him but don't undermine him.

I fully understand what you're saying, and for most of the year I don't think you would see a GM doing that. If a GM calls up some young players though, and he tells a 1st year manager that he wants to see those players play, I don't think it's a very good idea for the manager to ignore him if he wants to keep his job.

That guy won't be around next year, he's an idiot. It's hard to believe that they didn't give Sandberg a shot and forced him to leave the organization for Quade.

Because there are a ton of guys tearing the cover off the ball that deserve to be in the 2 hole?

 

How can you complain that as a team they suck offensively, then complain about guys in certain spots? Obviously, there aren't many viable options.

Please tell me what skills Janish has that equate to him being a good second hitter. Have you ever seen him hit behind the runner? No because Dusty won't send the runner with Janish up. Just show me one thing that he does to warrant hitting in the 2 hole.

What's wrong with Renteria? If he's not hurt he has hit nearly .300 since the All-Star break and has batted in the 2 hole a lot more than Janish has. If he is hurt then what's wrong with Cairo in the 2 hole?
