The Padres set their lineup for a left handed pitcher. It was a good move bringing in a righty for long relief to counter the Padres. Wood had not thrown in a while so last night was a good opportunity to get him in.

 

Easy to second guess when you know a top 1 or 2 starter over the last month is going to get injured. Obviously, Dusty didn't know that.

 

I think that is why you have a long relief guy isn't it?

Do you want the long relief guy to throw once every two weeks when you need him? Good luck with that. Of course, knowing you have another option at long relief you can throw your other long relief guy to get him some work.

 

You're getting to a point that you're second guessing stuff that Dusty is doing 100% correct AND they are winning while he's doing it. Wood could not have thrown better than LeCure today and they won last night. What the hell could you possibly be complaining about?

A long relief guy has to pitch sometime. You don't sit them for 2 weeks in a row. Besides long reliever can be misleading. Most teams use their long reliever as more of a mop up man. They pitch when a starter goes out early, in extra innings, when the bullpen is spent, and yes, to finish out blowouts. Basically, they pitch when you need an arm and the person that usually fills that role is unavailable or to make sure they are available for the next day. Most teams try not to use them in game deciding situations but that doesn't always happen that way.

Nobody said that Lecure didn't do a good job today. I merely stated that because Dusty used Wood in a meaningless situation that he all but eliminated the possibility of using him in long relief today. Then by having to use Lecure in long he wasn't available to bring him in in the 7th where he could have used him in a hold situation. Instead he has to use Arredondo who he can't depend on to shut anybody down. Guess what? Arredondo walks the leadoff guy and the Padres end up scoring an insurance run. So now a team that is struggling to get hits today needs 2 instead of 1. That's what!

You can't foresee a starter going one inning. When a guy hasn't thrown in a week HE MUST THROW. As I stated in the first fire Dusty thread, hindsight coaches are the best.

Nobody said that they should sit and only be used in long relief situations. If I recall though Dusty had Horst up earlier in June and never pitched him for 15 days so don't say that Dusty has to pitch pitchers just for the sake of getting them work.

In case you don't know they do throw on the side when they are not getting into a lot of games so don't think that they sit on their cans and never throw.

Reds gonna have to pull one out of their Massets to sweep now.

Massett on top of his game today. What has happened to him the second half of the season, too much work the first half or has he just given up and could care less?

Yeah, throwing on the side is similar to throwing in the game. Why have spring training then? Just have 4 weeks of bullpen sessions.
