Nobody said that they should sit and only be used in long relief situations. If I recall though Dusty had Horst up earlier in June and never pitched him for 15 days so don't say that Dusty has to pitch pitchers just for the sake of getting them work.

 

So if they shouldn't only be used in long relief situations where is your gripe? You use long guys in situations where you don't want to use a set up man or closer. Lots of times lefty specialists get extended in the same roles. Horst was a little bit different than Wood because he was brought up purely to be used in that situation due to the situation with the pen. Wood is someone who is in the Reds long-term plans and needs regular work. And throwing on the side is not the same, all pitchers throw on the side--they also need to be used in games. You're complaining about nothing.

Lot of whining about nothing on here. It's getting kind of ridiculous.

I merely stated that because Dusty used Wood in a meaningless situation that he all but eliminated the possibility of using him in long relief today. Then by having to use Lecure in long he wasn't available to bring him in in the 7th where he could have used him in a hold situation. Instead he has to use Arredondo who he can't depend on to shut anybody down. Guess what? Arredondo walks the leadoff guy and the Padres end up scoring an insurance run. So now a team that is struggling to get hits today needs 2 instead of 1. That's what!

Well, I would think for the fan who watches every day the bullpen hierarchy would be very clear, but let me line it up here, because Lecure is not the 7th inning hold man on this team and hasn't been all year.

 

9th Cordero - closer

8th Chapman or Masset

7-8 Ondrusek (when healthy), Bray (for tough lefties), Chapman or Masset

6-7 Arredondo

Middle - Lecure

 

Now you add Wood in to the middle to 7 category.

Massett on top of his game today. What has happened to him the second half of the season, too much work the first half or has he just given up and could care less?

You know, it could be that Masset's workload is catching up with him a bit ... he's on pace to work well over 70 games for the third straight season.

 

Given up? Good gosh ... Masset is a major league pitcher trying to have a career.

On a side note, very nice crowds at the ballpark this weekend. I think they are right at and maybe over 30,000 per game ... versus the Padres. Very nice to see.

I thought the same thing. I could see him saying why try to get to third with two outs, and of course you never make the first or third out of an inning at third or home. But with a sinkerball type pitcher on the mound, it would have been nice to have a guy on third so maybe the pitcher is worried about throwing that sinker at the bottom of the zone.

Yeah, throwing on the side is similar to throwing in the game. Why have spring training then? Just have 4 weeks of bullpen sessions.

Don't even bring up spring training. Did you ever look at the number of innings that relief pitchers throw in spring training. Some of them hardly throw what would amount to a 9 inning game over a period of a month. Where do you think they are throwing to get ready?

Wood is a starter and projected to be a starter. If you don't use him in a starting role or in long relief then he shouldn't even be here. He should be down at Louisville getting his regular turns.
