It looked like he actually hit the plate the first time and didn't think he did.

That does not make it correct. By that logic, had his swipe been a little faster and he missed him completely, you'd say the call should've been out. I hate little things like them calling it out whenever the ball gets there first or the stupid "in the area" of second base logic. The rules of the game are there, call what happens. In this case him not calling it based on the usual looks to be wrong, but it is not always nor should it be treated as so.

 

I understand your statement completely. I'm just saying that any time you are beat that bad it's a given you will be called out. And after watching it 100 times it's still inconclusive. So if it was that hard to tell and the ball beat him by five feet, then he's out.

I agree. When you are beaten that badly by the throw the umpire would have to really be able to see clearly a swipe and miss to call someone safe.

I believe you are correct. You don't make any gestures until the tag is made (out) or the runner touches the plate (safe). You don't start making "safe" gestures on a missed tag; rather you do it when the runner touches home plate.

He touched the plate twice before the call was made so the ump was correct in making the call. If he says he missed it, I believe him. But for me, nothing on any of those replays or pictures indicated he was tagged out. Apparently, the umps saw another angle that showed him getting tagged.

 

I just don't see how anyone could conclude he was tagged out based on the replays from the link and youtube.

The umpire even admitted it was wrong. I posted the quote earlier.

Interesting comments by Torre. He didn't actually say that he blew the call because there was a tag. He actually said because the ball beat the runner it should've been an out unless there were other odd circumstances.

 

That means he should've just gone through protocol and called him out because the ball beat him and ignored the fact that he may or may not have tagged him. Not a good precedence.
