Who plays better competition than us?

I'm talking in terms of state titles ... Trinity and St. Xavier don't have much competition in that regard.

Also you have to factor in that until '75 maybe there was a Jefferson County State Champion and At-Large State Champion for 4A and then the two winners met in the Overall 4A state title game.

 

Sub-Districts were a mess IMO. Came about in the late 70's to mid 80's if I remember.

No ... through 1974, there were only three classes. Class 4A didn't come into being until 1975. Before then, all of 3A was Louisville.

My rational was a weighted score total based on championships, championship appearances, and championship win percentage. Completely unscientific, but a slow day at the office.Rank Team Score

To clear the air here we haven't always had the enrollment advantage we have now. The 12 titles we won prior to Beatty's arrival were won, largely, when we either had similar enrollment or lower enrollment than much of our competition.

A friend has access to a 1988-89 KHSAA directory ... these are the enrollments of the biggest schools in the state, based on figures in grades 10-12. I doubled the enrollments of Trinity and St. Xavier to reflect their all-boys status.

Even then, Trinity was still near the top, although not with the advantage they enjoy now. It's very interesting that, with the exception of Henderson County, nearly every school on the list saw their enrollment decline with the construction of new schools.

 

Another thing to bring up in this discussion is the fact that we have no control over other schools' enrollment and yet it seems as though people instantly want to disqualify us because we have around 1500 male students walking our halls, the majority of whom have no interest in stepping foot on the field.

But there is only one other school that has access to that a pool that large ...

To me, said advantage isn't what it's cracked up to be.

Why not?

1 - because our kids come to us based upon numerous factors....for example: their fathers fame here, various academic possibilities, other programs Trinity offers, etc.

2 - we don't cut anyone in football (I actually don't think that any program in KY does)

3 - we haven't always had a enrollment advantage.

4 - our percentage of eligible players - actual players is very, very low (most don't care to play football)

5 - our other sports don't benefit from said advantage (this is the biggest point), basketball and baseball should see the same advantage year in, and year out.

6 - there are other programs that succeed with lesser enrollments.

To me, said advantage isn't what it's cracked up to be.

I am all for getting ride of all classes. That being said, we know that won't happen. From that point, what could you do? You can't regionalize it. That lends to districts and regions. You have to have competition be statewide at some point. I don't know what the perfect answer is. That being said, that's not the intent of this thread anyway.

 

As a Trinity fan, I am will to secede greatest program dominance to Highlands for now. As we move forward, the results will dictate the outcome. As I have read this thread, I get the feeling the there is a large group of HHS or other smaller factions that are upset, because our real estate and facilities have become appealing enough that we have been able to expand. While HHS, is amazing for being able to succeed with a vastly lesser enrollment than ours. Don't kid yourselves. If Trinity decided, tomorrow, to limit enrollment to 500, we would still dominate. Do you get my point?

Football has always been a numbers game simply because you have to have more players to field and compete. Baseball and Basketball require fewer numbers and that's why smaller schools compete so well against bigger schools in those sports.

So you would have a school who has a purpose to only allow the best athletes and players into their enrollment rather than the best scholars? :confused:

I do believe that size matters. I also believe location (as alluded to by another thread) matters. So, even if Trinity & X didn't exist, the large majority of those students would likely be at other schools in the Jefferson County area. Given the many different reasons people choose Trinity & X, I think the most logical hypothesis is that they'd be at Male, Manual, Ballard, possibly Eastern. If we're allowed to still have private schools in this mythical world, I think that DeSales and Holy Cross would likely benefit from a no Trinity/X scenario. Of the minority that wouldn't be in Jefferson County schools, I'd say that most of the other students would be in Oldham Co schools. Maybe a few in Shelby, and a few in Bullitt.

 

Just my hypothesis, and my conclusion that the largest class would still be dominated by Jefferson County Schools, and possibly that some of the smaller schools would be better, and thus be more of a factor in the 5A, 4A scenarios.

I agree somewhat. I can see in the near future where Trinity could pass up Highlands in most people's eyes as the best program in the state. The gap truly is a very small gap. Miniscule.....
