Let's say you wanted to buy Carson Palmer's house ($1.9 million). You know there is no way you can afford it. Would you apply for a loan anyway? In other words, why would you apply for something you know for a fact you can not get?

Highlands was placed in 3A. Geographically there was noone in their area in 3A. Same for Cov. Cath. in 4A. So being that Geographically , there where zero teams or very few for these teams to play in thier area they both petitioned and were allowed to play up . Highlands from 3A to 5A and Cov. Cath. from 4A to 5A.

 

You can not move up for the sole purpose of competition.

 

Keep in mind. This has been the last three years. This year (2011) Highlands and Cov. Cath. are in 4A

 

I also need to add that there is enough competition in 4A in this area that they would not be allowed to move up at all.

What exactly are you wanting to hear ? Stop beating around the bush and come out and say it ! If your trying to say Highlands is ducking somebody , Highlands is playing Elder at the pit , that should explain the concept !

 

If you are trying to say HHS is ducking Trinity , your wrong. These two will go at it in a game like , full contact scrimmage , what else do you want .

Go back and read the thread ... I'm not accusing Highlands of ducking anyone. I'm only saying this "super class" idea is crap because no one wants to play in it.

No argument there, but there is a reason Highlands didn't petition for a move to 6A ...

 

They could've easily petitioned for a move to 6A in 2007, when they were granted a move up to 5A. They could have asked to make a similar move last year, but as far as I know, they didn't.

 

I'm not criticizing Highlands in this at all. I just get tired of people proposing this "super class" of state powers when we could easily have it with schools like Highlands, Boyle County, Lexington Catholic, Bowling Green, etc., all petitioning to move into 6A.

 

It's not happening, and none of those schools want it to. There isn't a state in this country that has such a class ... in any sport.

 

Highlands can easily do that if they want to, by petitioning for a move to 6A ... I'll be waiting to see if they do it.

Highlands has no reason to do it ... nothing is stopping them from playing St. Xavier and Trinity during the regular season, and I know they have from time to time.

 

But no school that size should be lumped into the same class as the Catholic superpowers, and no one should expect them to want to be.

I understand that. Highlands also had plenty of regional rivals in 6A, too, that they could have chosen to compete with in the same district.

 

Way back in 2006, when the initial six-class alignment had been posted, Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal posted on his blog that "Mueller noted Highlands would fall into Class AAA under the propsed system, but said the school woudl petition to play up into Class 5-A."

Those regional rivals had a complete slate in their district. Had Highlands and or CovCath appealed to move to that district the appeal would have been denied, as it would have placed an undue burden on whatever team would have been moved out. Again, teams cannot just choose to move into a class because they want too.

Lets address playing competition of much smaller enrollment. The newly formed Mercer Co. High School was formed from two AA schools and had an enrollment that would have placed it in AAAA in the old 4 class system. Niether of the former schools was considered a power prior to the merger, yet when combined and allowed to compete in AA against smaller schools the predictable thing did happen. Mercer dominated the state and won the state championship. If any historicly good team had been allowed to play down they would hav Trinity like success. Let's say CovCath plays in A or AA since it's inception??
