January 26, 201115 yr About an inch of snow laying on top of a skim of frozen rain. Doesn't look like much, but enough to call off school yet again. Any power outages up that way? Kind of worried about the farm house in Bracken County. Freezing rain with snow on top is very heavy and that brings tree limbs down on power lines. Thanks for any intel you can provide.

Actually, Mason was quicker to call off school than Bracken this time around, which is unusual. Fortunately there was very little snow in the area. In our little subdivision (south of Maysville), ours is the last house on KU underground utilities. The neighbors are on RECC above-ground.

Why bother, beginning to wonder, do your state representatives lobby for funding for snow removal supplies and technology? I mean really just hearing that is a complete joke. I'm sure I could name 8 states north of KY with far more snow than KY that haven't had the same amount of days out. If I were a parent in that area I'd br disgusted.

BUT, those states don't have the hills as KY does in some of these counties. I would say Kenton Co already has 10-12, and Grant and Pendleton has several more than them.

Spoken like someone that's never been to S.E. Kentucky. Take Piner Hill for example in Kenton county make it about 10 times longer, twice as steep and much more curvy and you get some idea of alot of the roads in these counties.

Our county doesn't have much choice. Ohio and other midwestern states are quite a bit flatter than Owsley County. And when you go east and southeast of us into Breathitt, Perry, Letcher, Clay, etc, the hills get even steeper and more dangerous. Plus, we have a lot of side roads that are still gravel and salt or other snow removal methods don't work on them.
