Upset?? Holmes continues to have their number! This team is very talented and can play with anyone on any given night!

Did Holmes' speed and full court press have anything to do with them winning the game?

I listened on the radio and it sounded like rebounding by Holmes, especially the first half, was big. The announcers said CCH only had 12 turnovers. They said the half court pressure was more of a factor. I wasn't there, though.

First half Holmes athleticism and quickness was too much for the Colonels at both ends of the floor and the Dogs killed Covcath on the boards. Jaleel Gray constantly got to the rim with ease becaue he was too quick for any CCH defender, and both Charles Knox and Dontel Rice were way too athletic and strong for Thelen and Baker on the boards.

 

Second half Covcath went to a 1-3-1 zone to slow the game down and this allowed them to get back in the game, as they went on a 10-0 run to start the third. Thelen also started having his way down low and he and Connelly played a nice high/ low game.

 

Here are the numbers for Holmes:

 

Gray- 18

Rice- 15

Hayes- 12

Palmer- 8 (all in the third quarter when he scored 3 straight buckets for Holmes)

Knox- 5

Peterson- 3

Mayfield- 3

Yes they did and Holmes was too quick for them and as a result kept getting 2nd chance baskets off misses.

Scoring by quarters:

 

Holmes: 17 - 20 - 10 - 17 - 64

Covcath: 10 - 17 - 16 - 17 - 60

Huge win for the bulldogs since they will probably be the number 1 seed in the district now

I was at the game and thought that Holmes was better prepared to start the game and it translated into a very strong 1st half. CCH played better in the 2nd half but you have to question some of the substitutions by the CCH coaching staff late in the game. Most notably taking Drew Baker out of the game when Holmes was really struggling shooting over him. I simply don't understand it. Holmes may have CovCath's number but I feel that it's more coaching than talent. Congrats to Holmes on a big win at CCH.

Both teams shot around 48% from the field and both had about 10-12 turnovers. The reason that CovCath lost this game was because they did not box out. Ball watching. The 2nd chance points were 12-6 in favor of Holmes and they won by 4. There is no reason, not one, why a team that goes 6'-7", 6'-6", 6'-5" gets outrebounded by a much smallter team like Holmes. You box you, you get rebounds. You don't box out, they get rebounds and Holmes got 37 and CCH got 28. All that being said, very impressive comeback to outscore Holmes by 13 at one point in the 2nd half. Connelly going out in the first half with the cut to the nose while leading the Colonels in scoring also hurt. It took a long time for Jake to get involved int he offense and they nver got Baker involved. Riedinger did an awesome job of scoring from 3 and hitting free throws. He and Machinot handled the pressure pretty well. Execution down the stretch was not good for the Colonels.

Doesn't Holmes have that coach from eastern Kentucky? He must be doing a good job.

I was very impressed tonight by the ease in which Gray got to the basket and the clutch timely 3's by Palmer, he can stroke it...Holmes is more potent on offense when Palmer is in vs Mayfield...I was at the game and I notice the little pg for CC never shot the ball, it just stuck out to me but I guess his job isn't to be a scorer...

I've been saying all year that Gray is one of the most underrated players in the region. He is extremely quick off the dribble and can flat out get up.

 

Palmer's 8 straight really helped Holmes in the third considering they only scored 10, with the other 2 coming on a baseling jumper by sophomore Peterson at the buzzer.

 

Biggest basket of the night, however, came with 133 left when Covcath took a 3 point lead but Rice answered at the other end with and one and made the free throw to tie the score at 60-60. Covcath's shot selection down the stretch down 61-60 and then 63-60 after two Hayes Ft's definetly left some scratching their heads.
