Thelen had 21 and Connelly had 16.

Thanks.

That means Thelen had 19 in the second half. He only had one FG in the first half.

Mark is correct 21 Thelen 16 Connelly.

One interesting note about the game last night. I don't think that I have ever seen a 9th region high school game where there was only 1 foul called in the 1st half. Holmes had a foul called on Knox for a moving pick and that was it for the whole half. They made up for it the 2nd half though as CCH was in the double bonus at the end and Holmes would have been on the next CCH foul.

First game I made it to this season. I'd have to agree with most of the observations of the folks who attended the game. A few things I took notice of though:

-I'm with sealteam...I'm not so sure why Baker was pulled in the 2nd half when he was one of the few guys who really made a good obstacle against Holmes.

-Holmes' players were much faster than Cov Cath (no surprise there) and they played like they had springs in their shoes. It was impressive. However, there were an awful lot of over-the-back penalties I saw that didn't get called. I think there was only one called the whole game.

-I'd be interested to see how many points Holmes had off field goals. Seemed like just about every basket they made was just rolled in or layed up. Colonels needed better presence in the paint.

-Thelen seemed, to me at least, to get gassed pretty early on in the 3rd quarter. It would seem to me that that's something the coaches need to work on with him and his conditioning.

I will only talk about Thelen conditioning that you commented about! You mentioned in your post how the Holmes players where "Over the Back" of the CovCath players all night long and my intent in posting this isn't to say why didn't the stripes call it but to say to you, have that happen to you all night long and see how tired you get. Jack is in great shape and in fact played more minutes than anyone for CovCath last night. Thelen conditioning is a non issue and you can take that one to the bank.

Holmes made five 3's. (Palmer 2, Hayes, Gray, Rice)

Peterson made a baseline jumper to end the third quarter.

Hayes had, I believe, 2 mid range jumpers.

Those are the ones that I remember, which is 8 fg out of 26. (21 pts out of 64)

I agree, TOG.

Thelen being strong in the second half was what helped Covcath get back in the game. He was able to continue to play hard and strong down low at both ends of the floor. He and Connelly also form a very nice high/low tandem. Without looking at the stats, I'd say both had atleast 2 or 3 assist to one another in the second half.

I guarantee that the talk Coach L gave his players at half time to have them come out so fired up in the 3rd and go on a 10-0 run must've been an emotional one prime for the history books and worthy of an Oscar nomination. Wow !!! ... regardless of this loss, it showed just how intense the fire burns inside of this Colonel bunch when it is lit right up under them. If they can bottle that intensity and bring it on at a second's notice, I don't think there's anybody in the 9th that can stop them. Hopefully they can sustain focus on that fire to squelch out any semblance of self-doubt and know with complete certainty what they are capable of once they set it ablaze.

Fair enough.

One thing you can surely take to the bank is that coach Listerman will "NOT" come out at the beginning and try to play Holmes man to man the next time they square off. The 1-3-1 was very effective and Holmes tentativeness to shoot the 3 after missing their first 3 in the 3rd quarter was obvious. On the other hand look for coach Booher to work on their 1-3-1 offense in anticipation of CCH playing more of it. Can you say a little cat and mouse between the coaches?

I believe this is Mike Listerman's 11th season as head coach at Covington Catholic. During those 11 years, has there been a single Holmes' team that CCH would have been better off playing man against as opposed to zone?

With the exception of 2003 (I think) when Holmes had Fischer, Brandon Smith & Englemon, I can't think of any reason to play Holmes man-to-man.

I'll never understand why some coaches think it's a good idea to play Holmes man to man. That's not a knock on Coach L specifically, but any coach who tries to matchup man for man.

I have no idea why CCH would play man to man, but there might be two reasons: 1) Rarely does Holmes see man too man, mostly down state schools, and CCH may have thought it would take a while for them to adjust. 2) NewCath went man to man against Holmes in the Lloyd Invitational during the last two minutes. NC was behind and were either going to foul or cause turnovers. Holmes actually played horrible to end that game (turnovers and poor shots), maybe CCH scouted that and thought to give it a try. Regardless, it probably isn't a good idea when you cannot match them speed and athletically. Also, they rebound much better when you play them man to man.

I am not sure what coach said, but when the guys saw what happened to Connelly, and that he was going back in there knowing he would have to get stitches after the game, they got mad. They then started to play better ball. The switch to the zone could have been made sooner, but if the guys would have had better help defense the man to man would not have been shredded so much. That is one weakness we see a lot of with these guys. Guys force their man to go to the middle, but no one slides over to help. One other thing that bothers me is this team seems to have a lot of balls go thru their hands, or get knocked from their hands. They need to be stronger with the ball. But, I still love the way this group plays as a team and really enjoy watching them. Once again, they will learn from this, and get better going forward.

Why would you force your man (who has the ball) to the middle??? :idunno:

That appears to be what they try to do. I am not sure, but I am guessing since they have Drew, Jake and Cubby in there, that is the intent.
