Cov Cath by 5

This game is all about .... no, not Thelen. He will do his thing and get his points. This game is about Maschinot. He is the key for CCH. I think he has improved a lot over the past two years, handles the pressure and leads CCH to victory.

I have never understood the comparing of scores. Its nonsense and there are too many different variables that go into these games.

I like CovCath in this one because I think their size and homecourt will be enough to carry the day.

If CovCath tries to dribble through their pressure they will be in trouble. If they space the floor and advance the ball via the pass they will be ok.

What defense will CovCath employ versus the Bulldogs?

You'd think a zone could work to their advantage considering their size advantage. I know Hayes can hit the three but I don't know if the Dogs are a team that will shoot you out of a zone. NCC did a good job defending them in the half court.

I'd pack a zone in and try to force Holmes to make outside shots.

However, you are susceptible on the glass against quicker teams out of a zone.

 

Holy Cross tried a little of everything against Holmes. A little halfcourt trap, box and one, 2-3 matchup...

 

One key will be defensive transition for CovCath off misses and makes. Does CovCath shoot the ball from the perimeter any better this season? That has been a weak point for them the last few years. Three point misses from the corner is simply an outlet pass for a fast break.

 

Holmes will need to stop hi-lo feeds and any penetration and dump to blocks. Those are areas I would try to exploit if I were CovCath.

Pass the ball in the halfcourt and don't try to dribble it.

Should be an entertaining evening. Hope the weather is not too bad.

After the weather fiasco at Beechwood Friday they will be very careful with the playing of this game. (heard students and players were in minor traffic accidents)

I have not seen Holmes this year. With the new coach do they press and run unlike the past few years?

 

Holmes is small, quick, and extremely athletic. They press from start to finish and once the opposition breaks the pressure, they drop back in to a 2-3 trapping zone.

 

Offensively, there's a lot more movement compared to years' past as well. Don't be surprised if Covcath plays a zone...man to man they would be way too slow to defend this years' version of the Bulldogs.

I'd expect to see the following match ups:

 

5'10 Mayfield v 5'10 Machinot

5'11 Hayes v 5'11 Riedenger (sp?)

6'2 Gray v 6'5 Connelly

6'2 Knox v 6'7 Thelen

6'4 Rice v 6'7 Baker

 

Covcath will have a HUGE advantage in the front court. Holmes will have to play fundamental basketball and box out at all times.

I think CC will struggle with Holmes' speed and pressure. CC better be ready for an up and down game. Listerman will think he's playing a team from Louisville, not a team from NKY. I think Holmes will pull the upset by 2.
