A gunman shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, and a number of bystanders Saturday morning at an event outside a Safeway in Tucson, according to a local law enforcement official.

 

Local news reports and eyewitnesses said the congresswoman, who had just won a close reelection fight in November, had been shot in the head during a "Congress on Your Corner" event. Her condition wasn't known, though the official said she had been transported to a nearby hospital.

 

National Public Radio reported that she had died of her wounds.

 

CNN and other news outlets were quoting eyewitnesses as saying that several bodies remained on the scene, and that more than 12 people may have been injured.

 

Ms. Giffords, 40 years old, was first elected to Congress in 2006 after serving several years in the Arizona state House and Senate. She married the space shuttle astronaut Mark Kelly in 2007.

Several outlets have said she died. A spokesperson for the hospital was just on at about 2:35 ET and says she is not dead but is in surgery.

Update at 4:03 p.m. Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords survived a shot in the head at a political gathering outside a grocery in Tucson, Arizona, according to Peter Rhee, director of the trauma care at University Medical Center.

 

He says the hospital received 10 patients from the shooting that one young person had died and that five are in critical condition.

 

The Pima Count sheriff's office says one suspect is in custoday.The Pima county sheriff's office says 18 people were injured.

 

NBC reports at that a Federal Judge John Roll was among those killed, according to "several law enforcement sources."

 

The Pima County sheriff's office tells reporter that a 22-year-old suspect is in custody. Deputy Rich Kastigar says authorities also recovered a pistol with an extended magazine. He says 18 people were injured, but would not discuss the condition of any of the victims. The deputy also said that the suspect had had only minor run-ins with the law.

It is being reported that a 9 month old baby was killed in the shooting. So terrible. It makes my heart ache.

Went away from Sports and have been watching this ever since. Praying for all involved. This is just a shame.

Yes, either I misheard or it was reported as "months" instead of "years." Either way, what a terrible, terrible thing.

This is a shame; my wife has a cousin that lives near where this happened. They haven't talked yet, but I'm sure they will talk about it some time tomorrow night. They typically talk on Sundays. It is truly a shame the way things have become.

Yeah, I agree. It's not bad enough this poor woman was shot, a 9 year old child as well as other were killed while others were wounded. The media and all of the talking heads have to try to make matters worse by fanning the flames.

Reasons? Yes! Blame? Not really!

 

You get these blow-hards on the radio and TV, some of them just want to use this horrible event to use for their cause and attack people and or groups. They should let the experts figure things out first before they start trying to blame. A huge difference in blaming someone or a group after the facts are in than running their mouths for their ratings and or causes.

 

It appears it was just a disturbed 22 year old, they said he was denied by the military recently as well.

 

But the political tone also should be toned down a bit.
