With Mike Yeagle hanging it up, Dale Mueller is the best coach in NKY bar none.

Different from most Highlands posters on here, I am outsider looking in and have no bias. When one looks around the Greater Cincy area, Mueller is as good as it gets. I don't always agree with what he says in the papers, and as a matter of fact it annoys me. But when I look at what he gets out of his team each and every year, NO ONE and I mean absolutely NO COACH in the area gets more out of his team.

His offenses are as balanced and diversified as they come; he runs wide, he runs up the middle; they hit underneath routes, they throw it deep; they run-misdirection, they run play action, they run straight drop back. How much more can a coach do with high school kids?

Some of you obviously have never coached and don't realize how much time goes into preparing a team to run all those plays in a game; it takes repetition and practice. A coach can't just put in a play at halftime. Even the pros have certain styles. They run a system and if it doesn't work against a certain team, they get beat-plain and simple. Sure they try new things, but only the things they work on in practice, and teams only have certain practice times. They can't practice every type of offensive play imagineable. They also have the 5 special teams to practice and the various defenses they employ.

His defenses ,despite being outmanned size wise, continue to play in excellent fashion. No team runs to the ball with more effort and more consistently than the Birds-every single year. Their play Friday was superior.

Their special teams are always precise and well-coached.

But yet some of you want more??? You need to take a step back and realize how much the coaching staff does and look at it objectively.

I saw Highlands 5 times this season, and I saw many other teams from around the state and in the Greater Cincinnati area. You have no idea what other teams CAN'T do that Highlands does. You critics have become spoiled.

Tough to argue that. Some need to realize that the grass isn't always greener. All coaches/teams have issues, it's bound to happen. It's hard to argue with his track record.

Boy did I have this one wrong. Kudos to the Knights on a superior defensive effort. I hope you guys win it all. Good Luck....

You know, I’ve laughed more reading this thread then I have in quite some time. It’s amazing to me how if you question the play calling of a certain coach you’re suddenly calling him a lousy coach or you are spoiled or wanting more. By thinking he had a bad game plan for one particular game and saying so on a discussion board such as this, you’ve committed some kind of sacrilege or something. Some go so far as to say that by thinking he didn’t have a very good game plan that you’re not giving the team that won any credit, which no one on here has said. In fact, pretty much everyone that disagreed with Dale’s play calling or lack of adjustments said LexCath was a great team with great athletes and great coaching and that they were the better team. No one is even saying that if he would have made proper adjustments that the Birds would have won, just that they would have had a better chance in their opinion.

Some of you folks need to lighten up and you also need to realize that some people have a different opinion than you and you are not going to sway us into thinking your way. You are entitled to your opinion, we are entitled to ours. No one is saying Dale isn’t a good coach or he needs to go. No one has said Dale’s game plan has been lousy all year. We’re talking about one game here guys. Heck, many are only talking about one half. That doesn’t make us demons, ok.

Dale is capable of making mistakes, he’s not perfect. Dale is a great coach, but he doesn’t walk on water folks and he is fair game to being criticized or second guessed. It goes with the territory. He can handle it, you should be able to also.

I think the general opinion here is that HHS has more than the 5-10 plays he ran Friday and those other plays were used throughout the year. He never used the full-house backfield when it was 4th and short, opting to run a sweep and I know there are shot-gun plays that he has called for throughout the year. The fumble snaps are a result of the QB trying to get back into the pocket before he gets bombarded. Who wouldn't have happy feet having 2-3 lb's constantly gunning for you. The shot-gun gives him a little more time to get the routes run and for him to see the field. Maybe have 2 TE's and a back stay in and help out on the blocking. Lex Cath is a very good team and they saw something on the films that HHS wasn’t prepared for. Dale (or our new Off. Coordinator) was out-coached in this one. Good Luck Lex Cath and I hope to see you next year for a rematch.

Are we done yet with the seemingly endless (and totally futile) debate as to whether it was a well coached game or not by Dale?

This thread induces me to want to break out in song: Let it be, let it be, let it be, now let it be. Whispered words of wisdom, let it beeeeeeeeeee.

I totally agree Cecil had no time to throw; I wasn't trying put blame on him at all.

Having little time to throw and DBs playing in your face coverage is a good recipe for defense. Sounds simple but most teams don't have those kinds of athletes to do it.

well said

That sounded awful... :irked:

Hey LN, next time I see you would you mind singing that for me. Great game plan by LexCath, Good Luck the rest of the way!

Good season Birds, thanks for the excitement.

LexCath my hat is off to you all. You came into to the Birds nest and pushed us around all night. The LexCath team I saw tonight actually reminded me alot of last years edition of the Birds. The d just flew to the ball. Dare I say, gulp, the Birds were out athleted tonight.

Congrats to both teams.

HOW TO SHUT OUT THE BIRDS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE KNIGHTS: 4 first downs, give them great field position, 4 fumbles, watch the 15 time state champ spend the entire 1st half trying to get the ball past the 50 yard line(the best part of the whole game)LOL!

SPEED WON THIS GAME HIGHLANDS DID NOT HAVE THE SPEED TO KEEP UP WITH CATHOLIC!

That's 16 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS to you sir. :D

And yes the better team won.

Mr. HEAD,

As pointed out, Highlands has earned 16 titles. Sometimes they lose...but I suspect they will again win. Most of the folks I visited up there were savvy enough to recognize LC's speed, and, though surprised, appreciated (and cursed) the ability of LC's defense.

Not to tear down your enthusiasm on a big win...let's worry about this week's game, and trying to get to Lexington Catholic's first state championship.
