20-25, some basketball players. Athletic and fast

Have a real problem with basketball players even being allowed to participate until their season is over. It would not be permitted to allow them to play/practice basketball while football season was going on for one and what if they were to get injured at these sessions?

You know football is king...lol

I know the football team lifts during the season, do other sports?

Several are playing baseball as well, and are conditioning with the baseball team, so the numbers may be a bit higher.

These are current 8th graders we are talking about. I'm not sure I have that much of a problem with it.

Not sure if the baseball and/or basketball teams lift during the season or not. The issue is that these kids have made a commitment to the basketball team and should not be permitted to participate in any activities related to a sport other than basketball until it is over. If they choose to lift/condition at another facility on their own then that is a little different than a program that is being run and overseen by the football coaches. I believe the weights/conditioning program is a good thing for those kids getting ready for the football season and my son will be participating in these workouts, but he will not do so until the basketball season is over.

Would you have a problem with it if you were coaching them and they were going to weights prior to your game that day and it was having an impact on their effectiveness in the game? These kids are talking about how sore they are and their legs and arms hurt, which directly impact their ability to perform on the court.

Are the kids being forced to do this? Do they lift every day? I'm guessng 8th grade basketball is close to the end of the season, so how much does this actually impact the season. How many kids are doing this? Maybe this is an opportunity to identify the true basketball players and working more with them.

Not forced. Do not lift everyday. Lift on Tuesday and Thursday which are the same days as games. Impact on season has nothing to do with it. They committed to play basketball and the season is not over yet. The district tourney starts next week. Approximately half the team is doing this. If some are planning on playing baseball or running track, should they go to those practices after school and then to basketball games later that evening? If some of these kids plan on playing basketball next season, should they participate in training/weights/conditioning sponsored by the basketball team before the football season is over. Would it really impact the football season? The answer would be that yes it most certainly would. The basketball team does not expect the kids until football is over and the baseball team does not expect kids until the basketball season is over.

I agree that lifting should not take place on game day since they lift for 2 hours, if I remember correctly from 8th grade. I'm surprised that the basketball coach and parents allow it.

These are choices that THE KIDS are making. As a parent i would not allow my daughter last year to do softball untill the bball season was over and then i made her take a week off at that. These kids need to understand that there bodies need to rest. shame on the parents for letting them do that.

You hit the nail on the head there. My son has had some injury problems in his past and the last thing that I want to happen at this juncture is for him to again be injured because he was trying to do too much at one time.

I understand the argument. My son participated in the MS basketball program as well as the football program. I don't recall it really being an issue. Also, being somewhat familiar with the MS girls program at Highlands, I was astounded at all of the other activities that players were involved in that impacted practice time and occasionally game day. It was allowed from the top, so it was what it was. you just dealt with it.
