OR - not ruling out LCA at all - just trying to look at facts and use cerebral logic to contribute to this thread - my heart still is picking the Eagles (LCA that is) - but I am also a realist and I honestly think 4 of the top 6 1A teams are in the BW/MF bracket...

I think that it will be a Beechwood and Hazard rematch from the 2008 title game with Beechwood winning again.

Mayfield; they saw Bowling Green and tasted the atmosphere last year. This year a very experienced team brings home the 1A title.

Mayfield, veteran team with talent all over the field. They can throw to about 6 good recievers or line up and run the power game. Defense is solid

I am confident in my pick for Mayfield. They are a machine this year and should prevail in the 1A championship.

I voted Beechwood!!

But I have said all year that Mayfield is the #1 team in the state. Mayfield has the experience, speed, size and talent they need at the skilled positions. So why did I pick Beechwood? Maybe because of last weeks game!! Maybe because they are closer to my home. Maybe because it's just a gut feeling! I think Mayfield has to prove it to me I guess. They have basically the same team back. But with more experience. But they got their butts handed to them it that last game last year. So do they do a complete turnaround in the championship game if they make it? Or do they just make the score alot closer this season? I feel like Beechwood and Mayfield are the two best teams in 1A. Beechwood sure has played a tougher schedule. And has survived. Matter fact they have done a heck of a job just by keeping kids healthy!! I guess I just feel like they've earned my vote!!! Anyway good luck to both!!!

 

Luckily, they won't be playing last year's Lex Christian team... if they make it to Bowling Green. That team was a juggernaut and I don't believe an even better Mayfield team, like the one this year, could beat that team from '09. With that being said, I'm not sure that the Beechies can make up the 5 to 6 TD's difference that they were beaten by in Mayfield last year. Beechwood is certainly better and they are playing at home, which is worth a TD or perhaps 2, but it seems Mayfield should still be a strong favorite should this game happen. Schedule wise, the only difference is Trigg County, instead of Trousdale in comparison to last year so I can't really buy into this argument.

Do you think Mayfield this year is better than last year? I am not so sure. Is there any player even close to as good as Shelton? For me, Shelton and Quan Weaver are by far the two best players I have seen in 1A in quite a few years. I don't think Mayfield has a player that single handedly can dominate a game like Shelton. In the final Guhy had multiple picks. Wouldn't have mattered if Jerry Rice were wearing a Mayfield jersey. Jackson makes the most impact on the other side of the ball IMO. And I don't think Guhy will make the same mistakes he made last season. And I don't think that Beechwood has any type of tradition that Mayfield fears. Teams from this side of I-65 have Beechwood block to a degree. Not the same for Mayfield. That's just how I see it. Perhaps I'm wrong. Are they better than last year's team? Perhaps not, yet that doesn't mean that they aren't the favorites or that they won't win. Do they have to be better than last year's team to win it this season?

1st and foremost, it's the senior leadership... much of which is anchoring the offense and defensive line... BIG Bonus. Throw in a 3 year starter at QB, who is making much better decisions this year (top 15 passer according to KHSAA web, 70 percent completion rate and only 1 interception) and you've got the makings of a very good team. Guhy at QB also has just enough speed to take off down the field for 8 or 9 yards when he has to pick up a first down, not his first option, but can do it. Mayfield can go two ways with the run game, some speed and plenty of power with Jackson or more of a elusive runner in Noonan, who is good at reading the defense while making something out of nothing... he is the kind of runner that "squirts" through the line. You might be looking for him in the pile, next thing you know he sneaks out the other side. No super stars like Shelton when it comes to the receivers, which I think makes this team the most dangerous on offense. There are 4 high quality receivers, only 1 of them a senior, who catch EVERYTHING and will run your DB's from one sideline to the other while moving up the field. These guys run 50 yards to gain 30, but it works (always afraid there will be a block in the back call when this happens as it looks more like a punt return than a receiver's route). Guhy throws to all of these guys equally which makes it very tough to key on one receiver. Last year, Shelton was double and triple teamed; no way you can do that to someone on this team without paying for it, they are all above average with speed and ability. Defense: again a strong line with Jackson in on every tackle. Same guys catching the ball are also covering the defense. If there is one shortcoming it's that the DB's are vertically challenged with only one guy standing over 6 feet. Tall receivers will have an advantage, such was the case with Josh Forrest of Paducah Tilghman.

Mayfield was definitely the better team last year but I'm not sure they were 38-0 better than Beechwood. Rigdon had a huge problem with the crown on the field and was overthrowing receivers on every throw. When you go 3 and out nearly every series it gives your opponent more chance to score.

Frankly, I would have voted Hazard as the 2nd best team last year as they were the only 1A team to give Lex Christian a game. Mayfield finished number 2 simply because of geography, they came from the west bracket and qualified for state. I have no problem when someone says that Mayfield got whacked last year, they did. No one is worried about last year any more though, it's all about the next 5 weeks. Considering the many players from last year on this year's two teams, you can't help but wonder how those points will be made up by Beechwood.

One game doesn't tell everything ... two cases in point.

 

In 2008, LCA romped over Hazard 49-7 during the regular season, then lost to Hazard 28-21 in the state semifinals.

 

Look at Mayfield and Crittenden County a year ago ... Mayfield blew out the Rockets 42-7, then barely won the rematch (31-28) in the playoffs.

 

Did Mayfield finish second, simply because of geography? Perhaps. But when you look at both teams' bodies of work, Mayfield clearly had the edge. Hazard's only real argument is based on one single game, one out of 14 and 15 on the two teams' schedules.

Here are my thoughts on the Boise State Cardinals

 

No question Mayfield was not 38 points better than Beechwood last year but as emperor stated the wheels fell of the Bw cart. Same for Mayfield in the title game.

 

As spindoc stated, mayfield has great respect for Bw but no fear or awe of their tradition as we have our equally impressive if not more impressive tradition and we have never lost to Bw and that helps espically after routing Bw last year though over confidence can also conspire to get you beat.

 

Is Mayfield better than last year? Yes (Jackson, Jackson, Jackson, a name all will know soon if not already) and no, last years team had two superstars that are gone. Shelton required a minimum of double coverage and then still hurt teams and Murerll was a shifty back that as far as HS goes was outstanding. The speed factor of these two is not as good this year and that is big. Last year one wrong move by a defense and forget it, td Cards. Don't get me wrong, this team has great team speed but no one of Shelton's ability. This year the same line is back and they are bigger, faster and stronger than last year and make fewer mistakes and they have more depth from a steller group of underclassmen (JV won the all West KY Conf title over Hophinsville this year). The QB is much improved, only 1 pick all year is smart and rearely makes mistakes and knows offense inside and out as a 3 1/2 year starter. Recievers as a group is vastly better with 6 players sharing the majority of the catches and a new kid from Arkansas just finally got KHSAA clearance and is fastest on team and in his debut last week looked good. The running game also lacks the speed of Murrell but not by much and Jackson is a very strong runner being more of a power runner than skat back Murrell. So the teams do the same things but have some differences. THe componets that seem to be the most noteable for this year is the line and qb play as both are better and Jonathan Jackson, though a young sophmore, he is on tract to perhaps become the best linebacker we have ever had.

So the post that was put on here months ago still stands...why bother playing the game? just send the trophy to the Cards and save us the long cold 4 weeks of waiting.

This year's Beechwood team is very different in many ways, including players on the field. Very different.
