Stone, George E.

Birth Year : 1946

Stone was born in Murray, KY. A 6'7" forward, he played basketball at William Grant High School in Covington, KY. He was an outstanding player who earned a scholarship in 1964 to Marshall University in Huntington, WV. In 1967 the Marshall team defeated Nebraska in the second round of the NIT; George Stone scored 46 points, a record for most individual points in an NIT game in Madison Square Garden. He was the school's 9th all-time leading rebounder. In 1999, Stone was inducted into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame and named to the 1st team of the All-Century Marshall University Basketball Team. Stone's professional basketball career began in 1968 with the Los Angeles Stars, an ABA team, for whom he played in 74 games, leading the team in scoring for the season with 1,328 points. His playing career ended in 1972 with the Utah Stars, also an ABA team. In total, Stone played in 259 games and scored 3,530 points in the ABA. I went back and found this link to George Stone. Actually it was called William Grant High School and George went on to star @ Marshall and played several seasons in the old ABA.

Agree with you Clyde. If my memory serves me correctly, I remember a Holmes/Holy Cross game where Dicky brought back a Holmes team from a 14 point hole almost single handily to win that game in the last quarter. How off is my memory?

 

I also remember Dicky outjumping Melvin Turpin on a jump ball when #1 ranked Henry Clay (I think that's the HS Melvin attended) was defeated at Evans Fieldhouse. Heck of a game.

 

I think Mel Turpin played for Bryan Station.

Rick graduated in about 75 or 76. Great player.

Draud was the best pure shooter I have ever seen..He could of averaged 50pts a game his junior and senior year if there was a 3pt line. He would pull up 2 steps inside half court and drain it.. He was unreal..

Agreed. Another Latin grad, Jeff Stowers. Gotta remember, these guys were two years younger than everyone else. Not sure on this, but did David Justice play bball?

 

I never personally witnessed David Justice play b-ball, but he graduated in 1982 from Covington Latin at the age of 16 as their high scorer that year averaging about 20 points.

I remember Coach Shields talking about this. Draud hit something like 50 in a row from behind the arc at the top of the key.

When Draud played at the Boys Club in Covington when he was about 12 he had already developed absolute perfect form with his jump shot. His shooting mechanics were completely pure with great elevation, total accuracy, and finesse. I don't think I've ever seen a kid like Draud that had such advanced skills at that age. It was apparent even then that he had a great career ahead of him.

I've got to admit that I don't remember much about Jett. Initially I confused Jett with Jamie Medved, the Aussie who played at Scott for a few years. Regarding Thompson, I was just trying to think of other players from Scott. :lol:

 

Lye was tough. He was undersized at the collegiate level, but he was a handful for high school basketball.

 

Jett had a dunk against a friend of mine at Newport that was the epitome of a facial. He was a very good athlete.

Thacker was as good or better than either of these two. Only man to play on an NCAA, ABA, And NBA championship team. People don't give him credit for his great defensive ability in addition to everything else. Know people who played against him and have told me this. Much quicker than Schloemer and much better rebounder than Beal. Didn't score as much because he didn't have to, but could have if necessary.

I saw him play as a kid and later played against him at the armory. I'm not sure he is one of the 10 best in N KY history. I'm not sure he is one of the first 5 all armory selections.

Top 5 Ft Thomas Armory is probably another thread but what the heck.
