Because football can only be played safely once a week ... the postseason for such takes much longer to complete.

As a Middlesboro fan I would rather drive to Danville , Somerset or Lexington than Leslie County , Prestonburgh or Pike County.

Not in KY. Everybody makes it. Maybe they should have the district runner up advance to the region round....oh wait we do that in hoops.

I still can't wrap by brain around the need for 6 classes. Those schools with one victory just can't wait to be beaten down even further in the first round. What a joke!

That was put in place in the 1920s to keep from splitting into two classes for basketball. If the KHSAA hadn't done that the Sweet 16 would never have existed.

While there are valid arguments on both side of the football playoff debate, I just don't think this is one of them.

Interestingly, Indiana has almost 50% more teams in their state but does include every school in the tournament. They have 40 Sectionals with 8 or 7 teams each for around 318 teams. Those are split into 5 classes. They have 3 weeks of Sectionals with seeds being determined by blind draw in each sectional. They name 40 Sectional Champions. Those Sectional Champions then play another round of 3 weeks that ends at Lucas Oil Stadium.

 

So Indiana has almost 50% more schools, they all make the playoffs. They name 40 Champions at the Sectional level and then name 5 at the State Level, thus about 6 times as many kids can claim a championship in the process. Both rounds are actual 'tournaments' with real brackets with real Champions.

 

Can Kentucky learn anything here?

That has been my argument for two years, why is only one team in 2A not making the playoffs, and 3 to 5 in the other classes? I have used Indiana as an example and it will only add one week to the playoffs by my figures. If we are going to have 92% make the playoffs, why not include the other 8%?

Not surprising that the new alignment was approved. What is interesting is that 6A-District 2 will only have three teams (Central Hardin, Meade County, Nelson County), while 6A-District 6 will have the five northern Kentucky schools. The KHSAA has managed to avoid a playoff bye, however, by placing the 5th place team in District 6 as the #4 seed in District 2. That will allow next year's fifth place northern Kentucky team to make the playoffs, but they will open it on the road at the champions of the 6A super-district of Manual, Male, X, and T.

I'm sure it will be District 1 vs. District 2, District 3 vs. District 4, and so on.
