Initial set of responses from schools to realignment posted

It's been a long day and I am bit slow but I didn't get how they threw Ohio County under the bus? I also didn't see where Ohio Co was asking to move up.

Ohio County wasn't asking to move up. Simon Kenton asked the KHSAA to move Ohio Co up to 6A so that SK could stay in the NKY district.

:ohbrother:Told you I was slow today.

Garrard Co. HS to Paducah Tilghman -250 miles Estimated time: 3 hours 55 minutes

Estill Co. HS to Paducha Tilghman -300 miles Estimated time: 4 hours 40 minutes

Bell County HS to Paducha Tilghman -350 miles Estimated time: 5 hours 40 minutes

The team would have to leave no later than probably 10:00 to drive all the way to Paducah, stop and eat and then stop again a couple more times and then be there in plenty of time to get ready for the game. Then if the visiting team left at 10 your looking at getting home at 4 AM at the earliest. The estimated times given are not estimated on a bus, but a car so they are going to be much worse. Bell Co. would still have an hour more travel than Estill or Garrard Co.

It probably isn't fair to compare Bell County (the farthest school in District 4) with Garrard County (the closest school in District 5). When looking, one should compare Casey County and Garrard County to Paducah since they are both the closest in their districts, or compare Bath County and Bell County since they are the farthest in their districts.

A better comparison would actually be the average distance of all District 4 schools to Paducah and the average district of all District 5 schools.

For comparison's sake, here are the travel times for every current District 4 team to Paducah and every current District 5 team to Paducah. This is from Mapquest, with mileage and estimate time. Obviously time would be longer on a bus, but that doesn't come into effect since we're looking at all schools.

District 4

Bell County - 348.16 miles (Time - 5:35)

Casey County - 264.94 (4:07)

Corbin - 316.57 (4:56)

McCreary Central - 299.72 (4:46)

Wayne County - 261.60 (4:25)

Average Miles - 298.198

Average Time - 4:45

District 5

Bath County - 306.86 (4:45)

Bourbon County - 274.49 (4:14)

Estill County - 305.13 (4:52)

Garrard County - 256.23 (4:15)

Powell County - 303.60 (4:40)

Average Miles - 289.262

Average Time - 4:33

In conclusion:

The teams currently in District 4 would be, on average, 9 miles farther away from Paducah than the current teams in District 5. It would appear, according to Mapquest, that the average trip from District 4 to Paducah is 12 minutes longer than the average trip from District 5. There is a slight difference, but not too much.

On September 13, Ohio County filed a request to be moved from 5A to 6A. I found this signed document by clicking up a couple of file trees in the above link. There is a 79 page PDF file with numerous schools responses from early September in this file. Ohio County's initial response is page 53 of this 79 page PDF file.

IMO, Simon Kenton relied on this signed document from the Ohio County school administrators in their response. It sounds like Simon Kenton was backing Ohio County's initial request. Less than a week before Simon Kenton submitted their response, Ohio County filed a new response saying they were okay with being in 5A. However, it doesn't appear that this information was shared with Simon Kenton until after Simon Kenton's request was filed. Just food for thought.

SK was just doing Ohio County a favor... I mean, who wouldn't want to be forced to play up in 6A and have the opportunity to have your head beat in by T and/or X on an annual basis?!? Sounds like fun to me.

:thumb: Yeah, with that in mind, it does change things. SK's response was nearly as sinister towards Ohio Co as it looks on the surface.

Good stuff, as usual gchs. :thumb:

I keep hearing about what a hardship the proposal is to Bell County. How far it is to Paducah-Tilghman, for example.

What does Paducah-Tilghman have to say about traveling to Bell County or Belfry? Are the folks in Paducah all up in arms about possibly having to make a long playoff trip every other year? If they're not, can we assume that it's because that's business as usual when you're geographically isolated?

Bell County will get their grant. Hide and watch. Too many teams in the mountains for them not to be placed in the east. I dont care what arguments are made for why they should be in the west like they are currently aligned.

I don't think that anything will change for Bell County it will stay the same. Mark it down. I hope it does.

So are the only schools to have sent their form back in the ones listed? I couldn't figure out how to find more.

I was wondering the same thing. Surely there were more.

JC says the KHSAA miscounted and that they should be in 5A and they support that with the fact that the KHSAA should count students in their alternative program which would move them from 4A. I assume they stand behind that unless they find out Highlands has an alternative program as well.

JC was forced to include their alternative school the last time the KHSAA realigned which would have put them in 4A and a much closer district and region. Now this time the KHSAA didn't include the alternative school in the new alignment. JC will have a closer district than what they have now but their regional opponents are still all 2.5 to 3.5 hours away on a bus. If JC was placed in 5A district 8 the majority of their district and regional opponents would all be 1 to 2 hours away on a bus. With the rest being between 2 and 2.5 hours away, but still much closer than what they've been use to the past four years. I'm wondering why the alt. school was included four years ago but not now?

I know your probably just adding a little humor to this topic Clyde and that's okay we all need to laugh, but I just wanted to give you the facts behind the matter.

Highlands = Light

4A = Roaches

So are the only schools to have sent their form back in the ones listed? I couldn't figure out how to find more.

A lot of those schools sent back forms with a check mark in the "we like it" column. My guess is many other schools also agreed but didn't think it necessary to send a paper back saying everything is fine. It would seem to me the KHSAA would have only wanted forms back if you had a complaint or a request.

I just think the whole thing is opening a can of worms. Where does it end? I know when I played at Lawrence Co we played the final 4 game at Mayfield. There will never be a longer post season game drive than that one. Look it up on the map. It's about as far East you can be to about as far West. Pretty sure we could have been at the ocean faster. It was also one heck of a memory even though we lost by 3.

Our new alingment puts us in the toughest District in 3A IMO. Most of the drives other than Sheldon Clark are 1-2 hours. It would be a lot easier to drive 30-1:30 to Magoffin, Morgan, East Carter, West Carter, Lewis, Bath. That would take us out of a District with Belfry, Pike Central, Sheldon Clark and East Ridge. A lot less travel time and it would take us away from traditional powers. We're just going to line up and play as far as I know. Teams are unhappy now. If a few teams move then new teams will now be unhappy. Where does it ever end?
