I find it interesting that this thread has started after one huge win for Trinity, and a year removed from St. X pulling off only the second regular season/post-season sweep in this series in the last 10 years (the other was Trinity in 2003). On top of that, the average score in the two X wins last season was 33 to 8.5.

 

In this last 10 seasons, Trinity has won 8, X has won 7. Trinity's average win is 20-11. X's is 31-11.

 

If you look at the numbers after 2003, after Trinity's incredible run early in the decade, X has fared even better. Since Trinity beat them twice in 2003, X is ahead 6-4 in head-to-head matchups. Only once in that time has an X win been a close game (24-15 in 2007).

 

If you want to criticize X for losing in the finals after thoroughly handling Trinity earlier in the year on multiple occasions, if X fans' only goal is championships, then I suppose you can criticize.

 

But, X doesn't seem to be having much trouble "keeping up" with Trinity. I give Trinity credit for making those turnarounds, but X has been within one score in all of those games.

 

Considering all that, and if Beatty is that much better than Glaser and that's the sole reason for it, I can see why Trinity fans are so hopeful he stays. If that's the reason, and X gets the right coach in place, the Big Two in 6A might get cut in half. X has laid some beatdowns on Trinity in the last 5 years...48-16, 30-6, 32-7, 34-10. If they get a coach who can improve his team in the same way that Beatty apparently does, the question might become will Trinity be able to compete with X.

 

:thumb: Excellent points. I haven't agreed with all of his x's and o's over the years but one thing is certain--Coach Glaser has a passion for coaching and a tremendous work ethic.

I don't know anything about playing time now, but as late as 5 or 6 years ago, Mike played everyone in routs. I always thought he kept 100 kids happier with a 10 game schedule than Bergamini did 15 kids with a 28 game schedule.

Coach Beatty got a bad rap a few years ago because he kept his starters in during a blow out of Ballard. With that said, I think this is the reason for JV ball and is why Trinity plays so many Juniors on JV. These kids are all getting playing time one way or another if they have earned it.

However, as many have noted, the Tigers won both games convincingly last year, including the one that many consider matters the most important, the 6A State Championship.

 

I believe that the true fans of St. X are exceedingly happy with the many years and wins produced by Coach Glaser. Just like we Rocks feel similarly about Coach Beatty, even when others doubt our team or our resolve (such as the 4 losses by the team starting Brian Brohm's senior year). Both coaches are admired and respected by those who matter the most, their school ADs, administrations and, most of all, by the student athletes that play for them. Enough said.

If I am in fact reading you correctly, I must say that I'm a bit surprised; but then again, as I stated in a previous post, I am not very familiar with the particulars of the Trinity and St. X football programs.

After rereading my post, I’m afraid I did not properly articulate what I was trying to say.

 

Coach Beatty tells all parents/players at the beginning of every year that he is there to win games. The kids that play will be the ones he thinks are going to help him win. He has said directly, indirectly and in a million different ways that he is not concerned about being liked or disliked. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has said “He is what he is” when referring to Coach Beatty. He is there to win games. Period. End of story.

 

My experience with his players has been that, by the time they graduate, most understand what he is all about. The conclusion many reach is - Great football mind. Yep. Great guy. Nope. But most weren’t looking for, expecting or needing a Great guy. They were looking for someone to teach them how to play good high school football, which Coach Beatty does.

 

As far as the statement that Coach Beatty “does well building the character of his kids” – much of the character building is a result of the effort and discipline required to be part of any successful team, football or otherwise. Building character, which is often cited as one of Coach Glaser’s strengths, is not Coach Beatty’s primary objective – winning games is. Nothing that I have seen or heard leads me to believe that, outside of a handful of players each year, Coach Beatty even considers how what he says or does affects a player. I don’t think it’s tough love or a “parental relationship”, it’s just his way of running his football team. Coach Beatty’s propensity to call out players during practice seems to have increased quite a bit over the last few years, to the point of being uncomfortable to observe last year, which I believe contributed to the reduced numbers in this year’s Senior class. When players who are used to being successful (in school and sports) run into Coach Beatty’s “style” there is going to be a certain amount of wreckage, and hard feelings among players and parents.

 

The only complaint about his style I consider legitimate is that you don’t always know what is going to land you in Coach Beatty's dog house, and once you’re in his dog house, it’s almost impossible to get out. This has left many players very frustrated, and feeling that they weren't given a fair chance to demonstrate that they could perform.

Having said that, if you are an X fan why do you care about Beatty? and if you are a T fan, what difference does it make what you think about Glaser? Just get behind your guy as he tries to beat your rival. It's that simple.

Beatty would never pick up a broom or tip his cap to opponent's fans. But on the flip side he is not as close to his players in a "friend" sort of way. Glaser is the more "understanding" father figure, Beatty is the more "disciplinarian" father figure.

Nice observations - esp. from someone (I take it ) is not close to either program. Very objective. I think to a large degree you have captured the essence of both men.

 

I have heard Coach B say on more than one occasion that: he does not want - does not need - or is not looking for " 16 and 17 year old friends."

[ Or words to that effect.] He is about coaching, teaching, and preparing them for life.

I think what is funny is Rock fans love to discuss how much talent X had, somehow dismissing the fact that they had some pretty good talent too. If you keep on saying it, and they do often, maybe it becomes believable. Trinity has had big time talent in individuals, good enough to play for not only the local colleges but the top ones in the country. They have a player good enough for Florida, good enough to play for Ohio State, Good enough to be Orange Bowl MVP and play in the NFL. UL and UK rosters are peppered with T and X players about even in numbers but most of the Trinity players play. Okay Smith, Baisch, Finch( when he's not hurt) , and Anderson played for X but what about McDermott, Tydlacka, Radcliff, Donnell, Kupper, Robey, Whiting, etc. I think Stein and Melillo at UK get in so at least say the big talent leans to the Trinity side. I am sure I am missing some others. BTW-Congrats to Ryan Tydlacka for being named National Punter of the week. Talent is one factor, coaching is another, but to say again that X has this landslide on the talent pool belittles the outstanding athletes that have represented the Rocks.
