I get this is a football thread but X has done pretty well in titles over the last few years. The better question might be, what didn't we win last year? Glaser or not we will be back.

Seriously though... what does it mean for St. X to "be back?" Back to what, winning two football titles every 10 years while watching your crosstown Catholic archrival haul in seven? Plus, with T and X now being in the same district, the comparisons between T and X will only grow bigger.

 

When it comes to football, what is the St. X community willing to accept? Is winning a lot of games against KY teams but losing to Trinity most years OK? Is winning at least one of the two games between T and X every year OK? How about titles?

 

I don't know much about T or X football (I don't know much about football, period). According to a lot of BGP'ers, St. X is blessed with a great deal of athletic/football talent on a consistent basis, and if what's written on BGP is true, St. X often has the upper hand in terms of talent (vis a vis Trinity). It seems to me that T and X ought to be about equal in football, then. Why has the T/X series (especially when it comes to the playoffs) become so tilted in T's favor?

Beatty is a much better coach than Glaser.

Actually, the rivalry game has been tilted in X's favor for the past for years going into this one. Trinity, however, would make their adjustments tweak their offense and their D would get better and we'd get them in the playoffs/championship game. Last year the pendulum swung X's ways for both games.

Does anybody else think Coach G looks like Jerry Van Dyke?

Coach Glaser is a good man and as he says, is really all about the kids. I think he has earned the right to call it quits when he's ready to go. With that said, I'm hoping he's there until my youngest graduates from Trinity in 8 more years.

I don't think too many of the kids that have graduated from T in the last three or four years would agree with the contention that "Coach Beatty is a great guy and does well building the character of his kids."

^ You'd be dead wrong. I have been heavily involved in the program for most of Bob's tenure. While he's extremely hard on the kids, it has lead to most all becoming a better person for it.

I guess that is why some Trinity players come to Coach Glaser for college recruiting assistance, since they can't get any help from their own coach.

Look, I'm not going to slam Coach Glaser, but X fans are blind if they don't realize that there are some former players that aren't enamored with Coach Glaser. He's as much a human as any other coach. Are there former players who don't like Coach Beatty? Sure! It's just the nature of the Coach/Player dynamic. But, whether you believe it or not, there are a TON of former players who actually like Coach Beatty, and many who grew to do so AFTER their playing days were over. I'd suspect it's a lot like a parent/child relationship. Sometimes, the child is very resistant to what the parent is trying to teach them. And it's not until after the fact that the child realizes the value of what was being taught, and the true concern for the parent was showing. Tough love ain't easy, and most times it doesn't win you friends. But it is invaluable.

What are the expectations of the St. X community regarding the X football program? Does the St. X community expect to be on an equal level with Trinity in football, or is it OK for St. X to be a very successful KY prep football power that occasionally wins some titles but usually finishes second to Trinity?

 

Basically, is the St. X community content with the current situation or do they want/expect more? If more is expected, how will this be accomplished?

WEll said \\ stated -- and I think you summed it up perfectly. I have found that people on the 'cutting edge' in their respective professions - those who are out there really trying to make a difference and who succeed - are not going to have universal appeal. They will always have their supporters and detractors. The same can obviously be said about these two Men. Different types - Different personalities - Different approaches and methods. It's a matter of individual taste - as to who one prefers or not.

 

Petty comparisions of the two adds nothing to the conversation. As far as trying to gauge "whose players like whom the best", or "who is the best counselor" - does little IMO to resolve the discussion.

 

Why can't we leave it at -- "they got their guy"...."we got our guy." The results \ methods \ approaches \ styles speak for themselves.

Since I actually have been fortunate enough to be involved in both programs over the years...I can say this. I think Coach Glaser will go when he is ready to go. I think that St. X wants Wins and Championships (just like any other program) but I don't know that if it is end all be all for X. I know that some of you may think I am crazy but its just what I have seen.

Coach Glaser reached out to my son on several occasions while and after he played at Trinity. I truly appreciated this because he didn't see it as an T or X thing. He just saw a young man that was in need of some additional guidance and wanted to help. I consider Coach Glaser a good man and my friend. Not just because of what he did for my son but what I have watched him for young men over the past 8/10 years. Not really for this thread/post but I have also watched him do antics on the field (that get discussed here on a daily basis) that make me want to shake my head. One day when the time is right I will ask him about that (for those who know me on here, know I am bold enough to do so :lol:.) Whenever Coach Glaser leaves St. X I will remember him for what I watched him do to build boys into men first and accomplishments on the football field second.

 

I will not discuss Bob Beatty because this thread is not about him. He is a great coach and I wish him well.

I find it interesting that this thread has started after one huge win for Trinity, and a year removed from St. X pulling off only the second regular season/post-season sweep in this series in the last 10 years (the other was Trinity in 2003). On top of that, the average score in the two X wins last season was 33 to 8.5.

 

In this last 10 seasons, Trinity has won 8, X has won 7. Trinity's average win is 20-11. X's is 31-11.

 

If you look at the numbers after 2003, after Trinity's incredible run early in the decade, X has fared even better. Since Trinity beat them twice in 2003, X is ahead 6-4 in head-to-head matchups. Only once in that time has an X win been a close game (24-15 in 2007).

 

If you want to criticize X for losing in the finals after thoroughly handling Trinity earlier in the year on multiple occasions, if X fans' only goal is championships, then I suppose you can criticize.

 

But, X doesn't seem to be having much trouble "keeping up" with Trinity. I give Trinity credit for making those turnarounds, but X has been within one score in all of those games.

 

Considering all that, and if Beatty is that much better than Glaser and that's the sole reason for it, I can see why Trinity fans are so hopeful he stays. If that's the reason, and X gets the right coach in place, the Big Two in 6A might get cut in half. X has laid some beatdowns on Trinity in the last 5 years...48-16, 30-6, 32-7, 34-10. If they get a coach who can improve his team in the same way that Beatty apparently does, the question might become will Trinity be able to compete with X.
