Everybody is hung up on the T and X state titles, and wins over each other. Trust me, I want to win both too. Can anyone name me a school in the state who wouldn't agree to a 14-1, 13-2 etc. record almost every year, state champs or ru in most years, playoffs every year, kids who don't embarass a program, and almost every player going to college, with several playing in college, and a history of producing outstanding adults and leaders in the community? Throw in a few years ago 4 National Merit Scholars.

I find it interesting that this thread has started after one huge win for Trinity, and a year removed from St. X pulling off only the second regular season/post-season sweep in this series in the last 10 years (the other was Trinity in 2003). On top of that, the average score in the two X wins last season was 33 to 8.5.

 

In this last 10 seasons, Trinity has won 8, X has won 7. Trinity's average win is 20-11. X's is 31-11.

 

If you look at the numbers after 2003, after Trinity's incredible run early in the decade, X has fared even better. Since Trinity beat them twice in 2003, X is ahead 6-4 in head-to-head matchups. Only once in that time has an X win been a close game (24-15 in 2007).

 

If you want to criticize X for losing in the finals after thoroughly handling Trinity earlier in the year on multiple occasions, if X fans' only goal is championships, then I suppose you can criticize.

 

But, X doesn't seem to be having much trouble "keeping up" with Trinity. I give Trinity credit for making those turnarounds, but X has been within one score in all of those games.

 

Considering all that, and if Beatty is that much better than Glaser and that's the sole reason for it, I can see why Trinity fans are so hopeful he stays. If that's the reason, and X gets the right coach in place, the Big Two in 6A might get cut in half. X has laid some beatdowns on Trinity in the last 5 years...48-16, 30-6, 32-7, 34-10. If they get a coach who can improve his team in the same way that Beatty apparently does, the question might become will Trinity be able to compete with X.

The problem with that reasoning is that it is generally viewed that from 04-09, X had a talent advantage, yet failed to dominate in the title count.

As a former player of Glaser's and friend to many Trinity players, I can say that if Glaser ran his program like Trinity's they would win much more. Every person on X gets to fully participate in practice, games, etc. I do not believe the same could be said for the Trinity program. I hear you are basically an empty uniform if you're not in the starting lineup or immediately behind them.

Last Friday's blowout is not the only reason I posted this. It is clear that for the past 10 years Trinity has dominated large-school KY prep football when it comes to winning titles. I realize that X and Coach Glaser have had success in beating Trinity during the regular season. I also realize X does very, very well against KY competition not named Trinity (heck, X is 2-0 against my favorite team since 2000). I do wonder whether X players, parents and fans are OK with X doing very well generally but struggling against Trinity when it comes to winning titles.

As the mother of a former Trinity player who never started, I would say that the "empty uniform" is not accurate. In my experience, even those who do not start fully participate, and are valued as competition. No one at Trinity keeps his spot without earning it week to week.

Generally, that will only be between two maaybe three guys, but again this is what I heard from Trinity people and I don't know what the difference is in number of players between the teams.

As a former player and father to a player that graduated last year, I can tell you there have always been approximately 100 kids on the Varsity level. Should all of those kids be out there? Heck no, but they put in the time and go through the drills daily because they want to be part of the team. During the 2007 season, there was even a kid who had never played football before come out for the team. He went through the entire season never seeing the field, but he was driven because all he wanted was a State Championship ring. He got one and 20 years from now, he can tell his kids he played on a State Championship team.

 

Sure every kid would like to play, but equal playing time went out the door in the 5th grade and certainly the minute these kids signed on to play at Trinity. This is understood by the kids and is told to their parents at the very first parent meeting their Freshman year. If your friends felt like an empty uniform, I can assure you they could have chosen another sport to participate in at any time.:ohbrother:

I agree completely! Although i see it as a testament to the quality of the program (and arguably resources) that X can be at the top year after year with their focus on non competitive players, I believe they will need to adopt more of Trinity's philosophy if they want to stay in the elite conversation consistently.

As the father of a former player who often went to watch practice, are you guys nuts? My son worked his tail off in practice regardless of where he was in the depth chart. The coaches wouldn't allow anything else. Thinking that Trinity gets better by letting kids stand around doing nothing shows a gross misunderstanding of how Trinity gets so good. The system uses "one day contracts" as a way to motivate all players to push in practice. I get sick and tired of a bunch of people that know nothing coming up with excuses for being second best. Now the reason that Trinity football is better than X football is because the coach lets half of the team sit around practice and do nothing. How do these people even come up with something that on its surface is so moronic.
