When X and T play for the State Title, the KHSAA makes more money off that game, than any other State Championship game, so there is no need for them to tithe their regular season game.

 

BTW I don't live in Louisville and I have attended the X vs. T game, it was a blast!

 

I have also attended games all over the Commonwealth, when I traveled more on business. It gave me something to do on a Friday night, other than sitting in a hotel room!

I voted it is good because of the recognition and hype nation wide.

 

However one reason it's not necessarily good is the notion of the rich getting richer. The profit for each program generated from this one game pretty much trumps anything else other schools could accomplish. That notion is of course if you believe that the strangle hold that X and T have on 6 A football is bad.

 

This game has grown in attendance due to strong alumni bases and 50 years of tradition. We do not have to apologize for anything. Stong alumni bases in public schools is something that was crushed years ago in Jefferson County with busing.

I've always enjoyed high school football, and I especially like to keep up with the elite programs. So dating back 20 years or so, I've always been fascinated by the T and X rivalry...the passion, the number of people who attend, the success both schools have enjoyed, etc. Rivalries between elite programs in any sport at any level are a good thing, IMO. I'd love to make it up and watch the game in person some day. I'm sure there are more people like me, so I believe there is interest in this game all across the state. Its pretty neat.

Good post. Well stated. We would love for you to come up sometime and join us. You won't regret it. We think it is something special -- but took a long time to get it to where it is.

 

One Year (last time before it was moved to larger environs) the game was played at Atherton HS. A T team which turned out to be 3-7 pulled off a 18-6 tremendous upset.

I would love for KY to known nationally as a great BASKETBALL & FOOTBALL state, but I'm struggling to understand how this rivalry benefits the rest of the KY high school football programs? Thanks rm, I will be watching it tomorrow morning as I load up the truck for tailgating. I just wish ESPN would get their act together. I'd much rather watch this game, than a meaningless contest between Camden County (GA) and St. Thomas Aquinas. I'll be listening to the live call on the web, though.

The game is not bad for KY prep football. It's good in the sense that it allows two KY teams to garner some national attention. I'm not too sure that this translates into the entire state of KY getting more respect in the relm of prep football. T and X are probably two of the top three prep programs in KY right now, and I think the reality is that once you get beyond that top echelon, there's a considerable drop off.

 

Trinity has been able to beat some well-regarded out-of-state opponents in recent years. I'm not sure whether X has (although I think maybe they have beaten Cincinnati Moeller in the past). Highlands beat Cincy St. X last year, but otherwise has not fared so great against out-of-state competition in recent years. In order for the STATE OF KY to be respected for its prep football, we'll need more than just a couple of teams to consistently be able to contend with regional/national powerhouse programs. I don't see this happening, though.

 

When you think about it, today does for KY prep football what the Kentucky Derby does for KY. The prep football world takes notice of this game tonight, just as the country tunes into the KY Derby and pays attention to what's going on it KY for one day out of the year.

 

Also, I think the fact that this game has very little relevance as far as playoffs/titles is concerned is one bit of a knock. In a lot of years, the team that wins the regular season game loses the playoff game (i.e., the state title game). So, who really cares about who wins the regular season contest, when everyone knows these two programs will battle again in a couple of months for all the marbles. It would be more interesting if T and X were in different classes, like how Boyle County and Danville have been. In such a scenario, I think the game would carry more weight in terms of bragging rights.

Well, I think its good for KY football being seen on a national setting, but these two schools really have little trouble with the rest of this state, maybe Highland and few other games. 95% or more of the state don't even have a shot. Their facilities and everything are a class above the rest. Not complaining here, just their should be a "private school" championship, and let the rest play it out. I love watching these games though, I have seen this game played about 10 times, and it is very entertaining to watch.

I love it!! Comparing the Trinity/St. X game to the Kentucky Derby? I think you are drinking the Kool-aid!! Amazing game, incredible tradition, but it does NOTHING for Kentucky HS football. There is a reason that it is not on ESPN.

I think this is a great game, but when people extrapolate the national scene talk, again, that is nonsense. Tell me how long anybody watches or listens to a game on "national" television or radio or the web if they don't have a vested interest in it. Not long is the answer. People that believe that folks in Los Angeles are paying much attention to this game or any other involving a Kentucky team, if they are not playing a California team are dreaming. This is high school football, not college and not the pros.
