Highlands dominance

Featured Replies

Yes, or they are people who want nothing more than to promote a negative image of Highlands fans.

But in this case it is none of the above meaning what you say or what mex it suggesting.

Again for everyone that can't wrap their mind around the purpose of this thread, the question is about what other programs are doing to get better, not Highlands.

Sorry Wildcat; I didn't mean to imply that was the case here. I should have worded that better.

Let's approach this from another angle - what does another program have to do to get to Highlands level and end their dominance?

1. Play Highlands on the field so you can see first hand where you don't match up.

2. Put in the work in the off season because IMO that is where Highlands is beating everyone else.

3. Going hand in hand with #2, get players totally committed to football. I may be wrong here but I don't know many varsity level Highlands football players that play other sports. Bluebird fans please correct me if I am wrong on this one.

4. Build your program from the middle school level up.

5. Put together the coaching staff that will be deep enough and committed enough to make it happen.

6. Get the parents and supporters of the program as committed to doing the little things that make football fun around all the hard work the players and staff are putting in.

Who in else in N. Ky. is doing this? I am sure there is more to it than that but I think all those things need to happen if someone wants to compete with Highlands. Beyond that, it is hoping for a class loaded with talent to show up and beating them with more "stars".

Obviously, in a given year another NKY school could be better than Highlands. On a year-to-year basis though, there doesn't seem to be any program ready to step to that level.

Forever is a long time. Things can change. But, HHS is looking pretty safe at the moment.

Gotta start at the gradeschool levels, not middle school, that's where I think Highlands has done the majority of their best work.

Correction on 3. There are normally 3-5 fballers in the basketball program. A handfull of baseball and track guys also. I know for a fact they are encouraged to participate in other sports.

I think it will be hard for other NKY programs to reach the level of Highlands "IF" Highlands continues where they are.

I think that Highlands will continue where they are in football as long as Fort Thomas is a safe, family-friendly community and the schools maintain their level of academic excellence. People who move into Fort Thomas (or out-of-district families who send their kids to Ft. Thomas schools) do so in large part because of the two factors I just listed (the safety/livability of the community and the schools). As long as the community continues to attract the clientele it does, the football program will have the "raw materials" it needs in order to continue its gridiron success. If the quality of the community and/or school system falters, prospective families will look elsewhere and this would have a trickle-down effect on the football program.

Again for everyone that can't wrap their mind around the purpose of this thread, the question is about what other programs are doing to get better, not Highlands.

I understand your point, but there are two ways that other NKY programs can gain parity with Highlands: 1. they could pull themselves up to the high level currently occupied by Highlands, or 2. Highlands could falter and "sink" back down to where ther rest of NKY currently is. Frankly, I think there's a greater chance of option 2 occurring than there is of option 1. However, I think it's most probable that HHS continues where it's at and stays above the NKY competition.

Regarding #3, there are "several" f-ballers who participate in b-ball and track and field, but at HHS it is not common for those to be primary sports. First, track and field is more of an individual sport and it is easy to participate and still make Spring football practice, etc. As for basketball, they typically participate (when football is over) but they do not commit to the sport in the offseason (i.e. AAU,individual training) but rather choose football related practices and training. This is a distinction that applies to HHS and not neccessarily every school.

Yep, well said Remmac. Football obviously takes precedence over all other sports when thinking about multisport athletes.

Bingo on 1, 2, 5, & 6

Quatro Cinco is right, the gradeschool levels is where Ft. Thomas gets kids excited about football without burning them out and developing ALL their players!!!!!!!! That is why they are deeper than even the 6A schools; everyone plays and learns to LOVE football.

I disagree with not playing other sports; some of the best athletes are basketball, baseball, or track athletes; leave that up to the individual student-athlete.

Heard Coach Mueller say last night that Highlands tried to play NCC this year but NCC turned down the game. Also heard him say that Highlands contacted NCC about a game next season and NCC turned him down.
