The issues among the coaches and schools appear to be boiled down to some/many of the following:

 

Struggling programs are at a disadvantage. They do not make the playoffs and their season is over after 10 games. Their competition does make the playoffs which means more revenue, more practice time for underclassmen, and more exposure for the players.

 

I say if the initial 6-class plan is seriously being considered, they might as well let every team in the playoffs as Indiana does. That eliminates the perceived advantages.

Then you would not need 6 classes but instead could keep 4 or , at most, 5. Eliminate the bye week, play 9 or 10 games, and have a come-one-come-all playoff system.

 

Why, as the initial thought for the 6 class system goes, keep only 3 teams per class from participating?

We don't care how many divisions there are, as long as the Raceland Rams get moved to playoff setup with a little more E. KY flavor :ylsuper: !!!! Bet the Fairview Eagles would agree! How bet Beechwood or NCC in the Semifinals!! Not saying we would have gotten there for sure but it would have been nice/plausible possibility!!!! :thumb:

It has nothing to do with Prop 20 or anything of that nature.

What you have right now is an egregious disparity in regards to enrollment in the 4A class. Your top school size is well over 2K and the bottom of the 4A ladder has schools with less than 1,100 kids. So you have some schools trying to compete against schools that in some cases are two times larger than the bottom of the same class. No other classification has nearly the same disparity...400 to 500 tops.

This is essentially what it boils down to.

I think they are moving away from the 5 classifications and looking at 6. It is more down to figuring out if you want the top 2 in each district or the top 4, which in most cases all districts only have 4, with the exception of a few. They are also considering allowing all teams in the playoffs.

I know Pikeville will still be 1a but what about the other east KY. schools like Belfry,Prestonsburg,Leslie and Bell counties? Where will they fall?

Whitesburg and Fleming-Neon combined to make Letcher Central this year, so I guess 1a-8 and 2a-8 would be short a team then?

I think only having this many teams per district really gives these teams opputunities to play better teams out side the district, of course theyre will be coaches that schedule cupcakes. A team could actulally be better come playoff time under this format than under the current one. Plus it looks to me like in 1a these are the true 1a schools and not glorified 2a-3a schools that have played in 1a in years past. The reason for this realignment IMO is that too often 2a-3a-and even 4a schools have dropped down a class when they werent competitive in their own anymore and mopped the floor with smaller schools. I agree some have had significant attendance drops especially in East KY. But i beleive it is the attempt of this proposal to stop this from happening. Will it work? Probably not,but at least they have made an attempt.

Russell Red Devils would love to play higher teams, it just makes the team better. We currently have 8 teams in our district. Not much room to pick up. Yes the attendance is a factor too. There were over 1100 kids in our 9-12 grades when I went to school. Now there is 635 in 9-12. CSX went down in employees, Armco Steel sold to Kawasaki, and Ashland Oil moved there headquarters to Ohio. Drastic drop in kids coming thru the school system now and it shows.

35 per class? Pitiful. It is nothing but a glorified youth soccer league where everyone gets a trophy. I'd say when all is said and done the same schools will play for the state championships, but it will be even easier for them to get there with watered down classes.

 

Eight classes in Florida. The bottom four average around 35 each. It's all about disparity(?) in size of schools. What would be wrong with the same playoff system with six classes? Imagine the regular season $$ games with rivals from different classes, more programs have a chance to compete. It will only make football more popular and stronger. It will also give start up programs a chance and encourage more schools to start football. Hmmm...sounds like football would be set up in such a way that almost everyteam has a chance at the playoffs...just like basketball! But could that be possible in the Bluegrass state? I got another suggestion, have real spring football in May and watch the college interest increase 1000 fold in the state. :jump:

Makes since to me with the classifications set up this way the teams inside the 6 classes would play teams that are enrollmently equal to one another.

It is still "dumbing down" our football....It is dumb...

Geographicly how close are Trinty and St. X? I am sure that they are closer than Shelby county.....Put them in the same district!!!!! the way it is now the KHSAA by putting them in seperate districts and regions for that matter is just bowing to the wants and desires of the "elite" schools once again.

If you're going to have two Louisville districts (and you have to,) they don't belong together. Trinity is in the St. Matthews, St. X is in Germantown.

This is NOT going to be a coach bashing thread!!!

 

Coaches, every single one of them, give so much to this sport and every single one of them wants their kids to be successful. You may not agree with this proposal of theirs, but attacking them or their job performance isn't the way to express it.

 

Let's focus on this proposal and judge it on its own merit, agree or disagree, either way. But cut the coaches some slack and leave them out of it.

With all due respect to "coaches" in many cases it is the "position" "coaches" resposibility to see that a player is taught the correct way to play the game and "teach" the correct "mindset," but many "position" "coaches" fail to do more than say "...you go here.....and then go there.....I do realize that in many cases the player is resposible for his own developement, but it takes equal effort from coaches, parents and player IMO. (in no certain order) I do think that the blame gets misdirected to the "Head" "Coach" when the real blame should be with the "position" "coach."
