As long as a DUI conviction didn't impact my ability to complete my job, I don't feel that there would be any consequences in the workplace. If I couldn't make arrangements for transportation to and from job sites and meetings, though, it would be a big problem.

Do people think companies should have the right to fire an employee charged with DUI?

 

Depends. If I was convicted for DUI I wouldn't bother even trying to go back to my job because i'm an escort driver for my schools Department of Public Safety. They are already on edge enough about letting me drive one of their cars because of my age.

Or jobs that require to use a vehicle during the day. I assume most DUI laws require a suspended license for a while so I would be unable to perform some critical tasks normally expected of me. Also having higher profile positions, most notably in the public arena, you are under a lot more of a microscope and held to a higher standard.

I would either be demoted or nothing would happen.

Well, I could see where it may be more of a threat to my job if it did bring negative publicity to my employer. That being said, however, I'm a construction project manager, and I don't see any news headlines for "local construction worker arrested for driving under the influence". For some reason or another in the construction industry, DUI's seem to be kind of an acceptable mistake to make...frowned upon, yes, but they're generally not going to be a threat to your job as long as you can show up on time wherever you need to be, and complete the tasks your asked to complete. Now maybe if someone is a repeat offender, you might have more of an issue, but a first offense that doesn't make news headlines, I don't see it making any waves.

I think I'd be fine at my current job. My next job well that would likely be a big problem.

How would an employer find out about a DUI conviction unless the employee needed his drivers license or was jailed? Say for instance, a warehouse employee. Some one drops him off and picks him up. Doesn't go to jail. He doesn't say anything. Why would he?
