6 Classes in football

Featured Replies

If you're dying to split it up, it makes more sense to do five classes. It still serves the purpose of separating the hi-lo enrollment schools in 4A and 1A, while still avoiding watering down the playoffs (at least, not as much as six classes).

With five classes, you end up with about 43 schools per class, if you're using the 217 number.

There is no justification for having 6 classes in Kentucky. Not enough teams. I am okay with the 4 class system, and while I don't think our state has enough to justify it, I could possibly be in favor of having 5 classes even though I think that does dilute it a little bit too much for me. But 6? I just don't see it. By the KHSAA website, there are actually 220 teams participating (some in JV or nondistrict action as of 2005). That would be 44 teams per class. 4 regions each would be 11 per region which is not that much smaller than the 54 (13.5 average teams per region) we have now. But 6 classes would have an average of 36.67 teams per class, just over 9 per region. Too small in my opinion. But 5 classes might encourage some of the schools just starting football (JV) or only playing a non district schedule to participate in district/varsity football.

By comparison, currently, for basketball in KY, we have 16 regions for 275 teams (around 17 teams per region) for 1 title, and we are one of the few states still with only 1 basketball title (not counting the All A State Tournament).

The bottom line is that I have no problem with the 4 class system, I could possibly be swayed to a 5 class system, but there is no way that KY needs 6 classes for football. Far too diluted.

Well said.

Why don't we make 217 classes and give everyone a trophy.

I'm still waiting to hear specifics on why we need this. What would the new system do the old wouldn't.

We've gone over this, pay attention. We have too many kids in this state that are losing football games. They are not winning state championships and quite frankly, they all deserve one. This will give some of those teams that may not currently have a shot at winning a state title, that opportunity. Two more state champions a year will give well over 100 kids the enjoyment of winning a state title that they wouldn't otherwise earn...I mean win. :fire:

I never got my trophy when I was 6.

But I did get to run with a football when I was 7. :D

Here's a little bit of an idea how it might work. This is using the 2002 enrollment data; since that was the best the KHSAA had available. In this example, 1A, 3A and 5A each have 36 teams. The others each have 35 teams.

Or better yet, let's just make 12 classes and you play 6 games. The best records at the end of the season go out together for pizza and ice cream.

I can't see that it helps the 1A people, it helps Dixie to win a title as we would fall in 5A. It splits HHS and CCH up, as HHS would be 4A and CCH in 5A. I don't like it. The classes are too small. Try a 5 Class model. That might look better.

Here's a suggestion:

1a, 2a, 3a, 4a - public schools

small, large - private schools

:):)

I agree. 6 is too many. 5 is the absolute max unless Kentucky picks up a bunch more schools playing football. Personally, I wish all 275 that play basketball would play football.

But what if we don't like the same kind of pizza and or ice cream???
