Of course not. But i would say that most Americans woudln't be okay with it either, so I woudln't change it.

 

Muslims (or whoever) can complain about it all they want, but i'd imagine they enjoy the days off as well.

Let's assume there is one. How does a public school justify being closed for one but not the other?

In Boone, Kenton and Campbell Counties it is indeed called Winter Break. Maybe you need to get outside that rural area of yours! Click each County to see their Calendar!

Actually Congress was in session on Christmas day for nearly the first 100 years of this nation (12-25-1789 for instance). 1870 is when it became a national holiday under President Grant. In fact Christmas as we know it really didn't exist in the same fashion as it does in a religious sense today for anywhere near as long as most people like to think it did.

 

Christmas itself was an arbitrary choice by early Church leaders to co-opt the pagan celebrations of Saturnalia, Juvenalia and the birthday of Mithras (God of the Unconquerable sun). They decided if they were going to celebrate the birthday of any type of deity they might as well just make it Jesus' birthday and tell the newly converted Christians that this was the reason for the celebration. As it is I have heard a number of biblical scholars state that the actual birth of Christ would have been around March or so if you go by most of the scriptural details.

 

Shoot many Protestants outside of those from the Anglican tradition didn't celebrate Christmas because of its pagan roots until the mid to late 1800's. Oliver Cromwell even banned Christmas celebrations in England while he was in power because of its pagan roots.

 

The biggest problem that I have with this is the fact that we talk about taking the "Christ" out of Christmas when he was essentially an addition to it from the beginning. Besides considering only Catholics and Anglicans, by and large, were even celebrating Christmas for a long time I find all this outrage amusing. On top of all that, most of the traditional celebrations prior to the Victorian era were downright Bacchanalian in their form.

I guess I can give you teachers...but why does it matter what students/parents refer to it as? If the school and teachers call it Winter Break, that's simply all it is.

You'll note that I said that (most) teachers call it Christmas break. It doesn't matter to me what it is called. It won't make me enjoy it less (or more) even one iota than would anyway. I don't need it to have a certain name in order for me to celebrate Christmas.

If a group wants a school to celebrate their specific religious holiday, said group has every right to start a private school or home school their children. I hear there's a great lot close to ground zero that would be perfect for a private school.

Funny indeed, :lol: but the fact remains that it is officially called a "Winter Break" in Campbell, Boone and Kenton Counties. At least in the larger Counties you have to follow PC or you will be sued and then forced to follow PC anyway.

 

It is indeed a PC world and even the small towns, and counties will soon be forced to follow, or face lawsuits. If it hasn't happened yet, it will sooner than later and honestly it is a shame!

 

BTW the only reason I knew this, was I work at a Community Rehabilitation Center and have some HS students who attend the County Schools in the area and I had to read their Calenders to find out when the school buses would and wouldn't be bringing them to us!
